Well i guess it was getting more and more likely that this will happen in the last few months as it seemed that Roger Federer just could not seem to get fit and healthy anymore in the last year or so and there were always new issues coming up. The last news i heard from a few weeks ago was that they have found water in his knee. This could have been the last straw that made him announce his retirement.
Federer is old by sporting standard(41years), even without any health and fitness challenges, it is a ripe age for any successful sportsman or woman to retire from competitive sport. He has nothing else to prove and I as well as many others wish him well in any path he decides to take.

That is very sad news for the whole world of tennis as he was the best of all time for many fans and experts...
I love Federer, and I am happy to have witnessed the best of a legend like him.

What I like about his decision is that he did it without participating in Wimbledon or another big tournament. The reason is that this is really his character. He doesn't want to take away the stage from others for no reason. What if he participates in Wimbledon once more, gets beaten in the 3rd round and the whole tournament is about his goodbye instead of the players who actually should get the attention for their achievements during that tournament?
That is why I think it is a brilliant decision to say goodbye at the Laver Cup. Roger Federer is one of the hosts, there are no points for the ATP list and it is the perfect setup to allow for fans to celebrate his goodbye with him. Even if Roger loses early during the cup, it doesn't matter that much. Chapeau for that decision and to not just keep going and going to then use Wimbledon as final stage.

Maybe he can't really compete and that's why he let go of that idea and didn't join that tournament. And besides, Laver Cup might be more valuable to him since he will represent his native country, and so it just shows how great Federer mindset is. Instead of individual accolade, he might go with the team sport that will represent his country. So in any case, it's a win win situation for him and yes, it was a good decision to say goodbye at the Laver cup. And at least if they won this tournament, it will be very big for his career and he could be remember for that.

This is the second semi final dominic thiem has reached since he comeback from that injury, his game is today against a tough opponent who is gaston it will be difficult for thiem to get the win despite him being the favourite i think this match can have 3 sets and i expect it to be a war.

I agree, Federer acted very differently from, for example, Serena, who decided to say goodbye to the audience at the GS tournament in America.
In this way, Serena drew all the attention of the media and the audience to herself, although it was clear that she has a minor chance to win the tournament and that there are currently better tennis players than her.
I am sorry that for the last year Federer was injured and did not play in tournaments, and that we could not enjoy watching him on the tennis court.
The great tennis player and great gentleman is leaving.

not sure 100%, but I think that Medvedev lost his first no.1 match as well
it is not surprise to see that, especially in Davis Cup, although I expected more from Alcaraz, but FAA is also a great player too

playing under national flag should be something to chearish for tennis players, because it is a rare event, but somehow some of them do not even like to play Davis Cup

Alcaraz was probobly tired from playing and winning the us open so its expected that he dosent have much strength to play for national team at a top level. But still there is a chance if they win against Korea to advance into the next round in the davis cup

Yeah, and there could be enormous pressure on his shoulder when he reaches #1 for the first time. He is still afterall just 19 years old so there could be some slip up mentally.

Playing under a national flag really bring the best out of this tennis players, so regardless of their rankings in the ATP, when they are in the Davis cup they are all in the level. And so Felix Auger Aliassime pull a win against Alcaraz. But for sure they can make a comeback.

It served to be a big match. The first set was really tiresome. Followed is the second set in which the points went 4-4 and then Felix took control of the set. This kept them under the lead. During this play Felix managed to make 16 aces which isn't and easy thing. As stated in a post he's just 19, and the first title few days ago made big expectation on him. As said there is more chances to make a comeback.

Some interesting matches to play today, the last round before the quarter finals.

Group A: Italy v Sweden
Group B: Spain v S.Korea
Group C: Germany v Australia
Group D: Great Britian v Kazakhstan

Team GB have been disappointing, they have played 2 lost 2. For a strong team its dissapointing.
There is still a lot to play for yet and to see if Spain can overtake Croatia into the QF's

Thats an interesting thought but IDK, if he was fit I think he would play, thats the competitive
angle top guys work on but I think he is more of a realist, he isnt going to win any notable
tournaments anymore, he has done very well for himself and its time to retire at a tournament
where he will be part of a team, potentially play a match and gets to share with players he has
competed against for so long.

Compared to lets say Andy, whom I have great respect for. Andy keeps playing, I think he knows he
wont win any more GS' he plays purely for the sport and to test his competitiveness.

And then Serena, different again, she was not a realist, she thought she could win another GS.

All very good points that you mentioned and I also do have a lot of respect for Andy, but in all honesty, what Andy is doing doesn't make sense. Given that he has already a titanium hip joint, also considering that he doesn't need any money anymore whatsoever, where is the point in testing your competitiveness? I am not judging him negatively here, it is his choice of course, but I really can't come up with a single reasonable reason for the man to keep playing except for the possibility that he doesn't have the mental strength to call it a day. Which is kind of absurd talking about Andy lacking mental strength for something, but after all he is a human being with emotions and I believe that is something Roger might have much more control over. Roger did the right thing and that deserves a lot of respect. He made sure that people will remember him at his best, they will also remember the few comebacks he had like winning the Australian Open. Now if Andy keeps playing for three more years, I am not so sure that the picture people have in their heads about him will be as solid and admirable as the one they have about Roger.

Also it might be the case that the next competition after the US Open was the Davis cup,
there may be a case where there is a different mindset being part of a team. Obviously
winning a first slam AND taking the #1 spot is MASSIVE so you would have to forgive
him for not being 100% focussed if that was the case?

Funny thing happen, not sure if this has happen before, but recently, Carlos Alcaraz losses his first match since becoming the world number 1 to Felix-AA in the Davis Cup, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2. And the thing is, this match is on Alcaraz home country in Spain.

I don't know if we have someone who can dig the records of let's say Roger Federer when he become number 1 and who is his opponent and if he won or not in his first game, or any other newly crowned number 1 in the past.

not sure 100%, but I think that Medvedev lost his first no.1 match as well
it is not surprise to see that, especially in Davis Cup, although I expected more from Alcaraz, but FAA is also a great player too

playing under national flag should be something to chearish for tennis players, because it is a rare event, but somehow some of them do not even like to play Davis Cup
Indoor hard courts are always random. I stay away from games with hard surface when it's indoor. Except for a few players.
The ball becomes fast and hard hitters have advantage. This is why offensive players like Berrettini are dominating Davis Cup.

It will take some time for other players to get used to the indoor environment and we will have a more predictable tour then. Just wait for Djokovic's matches in Indoor hard court, and put your house on his ML :p I think he will be playing in the Laver cup next week Smiley

The rennes challenger final was not as one would hope it seems that humbert was too much for dominick thiem and the match was not even close, humbert dominated both sets and won comfortably it seems that thiem need more time to regain his past performance and to win titles again.

Also it might be the case that the next competition after the US Open was the Davis cup,
there may be a case where there is a different mindset being part of a team. Obviously
winning a first slam AND taking the #1 spot is MASSIVE so you would have to forgive
him for not being 100% focussed if that was the case?

Don't forget it is only the Davis cup; is there really anyone who cares about that anymore, even if it is in Spain. We will need to see how long Alcaraz can retain his number one spot but I am more looking forward to the Australian Open even though that will take some more months. After all, everybody always looks at the performances during the grand slams.

BIG WINNER!

Hmm, well there doesnt seem to be much interest on the thread for the Davis Cup, I have
been making a few bets with mixed results, probably because the players arent taking
it 100% seriously IDK. Maybe now that the finals will ve starting and the end gets closer
they will focus more?

As Alcaraz gets more and more experience and develops his game, retaining the #1 spot will
be easier for him. He has fulfilled everyones prediction of
being "a future #1" he is there now.

To be honest, I wasn't able to follow the Davis Cup, and even if there is Alcaraz in there for Spain, I haven't made any single bet on it. Just reading some update on the match and how it is going or if there is some upset.

I think this might be the first time that we will see a player getting the number 1 and at least keeping it. Not like Medvedev wherein it was just for a couple of weeks if I'm not mistaken. But it looks like Alcaraz will try to fight it out in order to retain his top ranking.

I will probably have some time to watch the game during today. So I am curious to see if your prediction comes true and if Lehecka has some surprises for his opponent..
But in which game I am more interested is between Basilashvili and Bergs. A win for Basilashvili should be clear.

Over at Metz Thiem has beaten Gasquet in two sets and is into the second round to meet
Hurkacz. Interestingly Wawrinka is through also against Sousa. Two guys making their
way back from injuries/surgeries. Stan meets Medvedev tomorrow. Two tough opponents
for both Thiem and Wawrinka.

These two playing after break against the players who are playing top tennis games over the past few weeks have got difference. Two are really tough players and players doesn't have big age difference. This makes the matches to be interesting and we can't make conclusion on the match.
