HAs anyone successfully built on MS Visual Studio?

I gave up with VS 2010 and installed Xubuntu to do my recompiling

I just succeed to compile with mingw. I used this thread for instructions: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149479.0

Thanks for pointing this out. For anyone wanting to compile on windows, here you go. Most complete guide you're going to find. I was having trouble getting boost installed previously. This thread got me pointed in the right direction. Stock (unmodified) primecoind is compiling happily now on Win7 x64.

I followed the same guide actually, works like a charm.  I do have a question though:

Since I have the basic compile working properly, I'd now like to compile for x64 / i7 / AVX, but with mingw I'm not exactly sure how. I assume there would be some extra flags necessary within the makefile for primecoind?  If so, does boost etc also need to be compiled with those flags, or only the compile of primecoind itself?

Rather newbish questions, but I'm quite new at this myself.

Somebody probably made a GPU miner.

My rough observations:
  • Day 1 block spacing was in the range 40 - 110 seconds | difficulty 7 - 7.2
  • Day 2 block spacing was in the range 10 - 40 seconds | difficulty 7.2 - 7.33
However, so far Day 3 has been less aggressive:
  • block spacing in the range 20 - 40 seconds | difficulty ~7.4 and increasing

I would expect block spacing to drop under 10 seconds if an efficient miner was released.

any indication of value per coin yet?

edit:  other then 1 ltc/100,  I am not giving them away for that....
I saw some buy offers on the Google Doc for .175 LTC a piece.

I've sold some XPM for 0.2 LTC - however, my asking price is 0.3 LTC

Why are people denominating in LTC? I have to convert to BTC in my head in order to interpret.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system to credibly offer perfect information to all economic participants.

That would put it at AT LEAST $60k in marketcap already... above Megacoin and below Worldcoin.

litecoin has been pretty stable at 2.50 usd for a while.. so ltc is not a bad denomination to use....

Once some of my blocks mature, I'm thinking of doing a giveaway thread. Maybe .1 or .2?

I've mined 4 blocks in the last 36 hours with my i7, totaling 74 XPM. At an exchange rate of .2 LTC/XPM, that equals about 6 USD. LOL not bad for running my desktop on low priority for a day.

Um at a rate of 1 LTC per 5 XPM, that's 14.8 LTC equaling about $36 at current market rates.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

Something to remember, is that we're in speculative territory at the moment, Primecoin is new, from a well respected developer, whose previous coin is currently 3rd or 4th, just behind litecoin. It's a coin that has a new algorithm, and has a potential real world benefit.

Almost all the other alts are clones, there's a fair argument to be made that Primecoin competes with Novacoin, which has a market cap of ~$1,000,000. Or even that it competes with PPcoin and Litecoin. But whatever, it's early days, we'll wait and see.

If anyone would like to give it a shot, there's an extremely optimized sieve of Eratosthenes implementation here:
https://primesieve.googlecode.com

From the software:
Quote
The best sieving performance is achieved with a sieve size of your
  CPU's L1 data cache size (usually 32 or 64 KB) when sieving < 10^16
and a sieve size of your CPU's L2 cache size above.

Quote
primesieve uses the segmented sieve of Eratosthenes with wheel factorization, this algorithm has a complexity of O (N log log N) operations and uses O (sqrt N) space.

Segmentation is currently the best known practical improvement to the sieve of Eratosthenes. Instead of sieving the interval [2, n] at once one subdivides the sieve interval into a number of equal sized segments that are then sieved consecutively. Segmentation drops the memory requirement of the sieve of Eratosthenes from O(N) to O(sqrt N). The segment size is usually chosen to fit into the CPU's fast L1 or L2 cache memory which significantly speeds up sieving. A segmented version of the sieve of Eratosthenes was first published by Singleton in 1969 [1], Bays and Hudson in [2] describe the algorithm in more detail.

From the source, the sieve size is small (1 * 10^6) by default if I'm interpreting it correctly.

I'm wondering if a massively parallel GPU implementation with higher memory bandwidth also benefiting from the reduced memory requirements will see much better performance.

Also,
Quote
primesieve generates the first 50,847,534 primes up to 10^9 in just 0.4 seconds on a single core of an Intel Core i7-920 2.66GHz, this is about 50 times faster than an ordinary C/C++ sieve of Eratosthenes implementation and about 10,000 times faster than trial-division. primesieve outperforms my older ecprime (fastest from 2002 to 2010) by about 30 percent and also substantially outperforms primegen the fastest sieve of Atkin implementation on the web. Here is a list of other fast sieve of Eratosthenes implementations.

Is explaining how to implement this completely useless to a noob.. that is really really good at following directions?  I mean that is how I have been able to use linux over the past several yrs Smiley

if so somebody post or send a pm?  I'm trying to learn as much as humanly possible about all of this!  Smiley
