In my opinion, although ethereum is an indispensable and useful coin, however, there is practically no chance of overtaking bitcoin values, moreover this year. Despite the fact that ethereum now grows well in price, bitcoin begins to eliminate its shortcomings and thus, will soon and itself begin to grow rapidly in price. It may even be that the price difference between the two will not decrease.

Although at present the market shows that now the price of bitcoin and altcoin is falling, I am not sure that next year ethereum will overtake bitcoin. Why would someone want to use a currency that is both slow and expensive, when there are instant and feeless options available? Ethereum is a much better option compared to bitcoin IMO. You should also take a look at Nano(XRB) Instant transactions, ZERO fees.

I'm relatively new at this so obviously I have strong opinions  : eth explodes every time BTC dips , check out jan 2018 , BTC started going down around 5th-7th , thats when ETH started going up .... I do expect a BTC pump soon and a ETH drop ( $$$ are moving from 1 to the other with the pumps , weak heads panic sell , wales make $$ , life goes on .

I think  Etherum cant overtake the bitcoin because bitcoin is the primary digital currency. Bitcoin has perspective more than the ETC. The price of bitcoin is far away from the amount of the ethereum. Ethereum needs more around USD 8k to overtake the price of the bitcoin. We know that ETC is smart contract token. I guess that Bitcoin Cash can exceed the ETH.  But At the end still the bitcoin the most powerful among all the altcoins.

I also think that ETH will overtake Bitcoin as the top currency by 2018 because ETH is the currency of the real floor application and the technology with blockchain smart contracts is the reason it is growing fast

I do not assume so much Ethereum has the chance overtake the Bitcoin in the future. The only way to pass the bitcoin I think the if the ETH has a free transaction on all the cryptocurrency all the investor can send free and faster. The last is the value if the ETC reach the price of the bitcoin I guess there is a chance to overtake the bitcoin. It takes an extended period for the ETH to advance too much the bitcoin

Both bitcoin and ethereum are considered best cryptocurrency nowadays.  Since the concept of ethereum is basically from bitcoin, many investors considered bitcoin as the king of cryptocurrency while  ethereum considered as its queen.  Bitcoin value is higher compared to any crypotcurrency plus its popularity almost conquered all over the world.  On the other hand, ethereum became the backup cryptos of some investors while others chooses to invest in ethereum because it has lesser value. 

Considering the fact that they have the same concept of volatility, meaning they have the same concept of chance of earning, many investors chooses ethereum because it has lesser transaction fee compared to bitcoin.  Because of that factor, there is a possiblity that someday, bitcoin price will reached by ethereum. 

In the sense of overtaking the bitcoin price by ethereum, I do not limit the capacity of ethereum but I think it take many years before that happen.
