The next move in this game of chess is waiting to be made. Putin has been placed into a difficult position of "damned if you do, damned if you don't". If Kiev decides to use excessive force against South-East, and Putin moves Russian troops in as a peace-keeping force, then the West will cry "invasion", and if he does not, he faces a political suicide inside Russia with potential civil unrest for abandoning "leaving our people behind".

It all depends on the next move from Washington via Kiev.

PS: I think US has an overinflated view of self-importance and feels like everyone wants to pick a fight with them, which, in most cases, is not so. After the disintegration of Soviet Union, most Russians (up to 80%) viewed US as a friend or, at least, an ally. That number diminished after bombing of Yugoslavia, and continued diminishing as NATO bases crawled closer and closer to Russian borders, and rocket "shields" got erected. You can't keep feeling benign towards someone, when that someone rattles sabres. Current positive US rating in Russia lies at about 10%

Fair enough. To clarify: communism was not only in USSR, you need to add China, Cuba, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, Vietnam and many more countris that had/have communist system. Death toll is enormous mainly because of mass killings and famine that followed after nationalizing everything - change of system.

Since this is thread about Ukraine here is an example: starvation in Ukraine that killed few millions in 2 or 3 years. Similar thing happened in China, except the numbers are ten times bigger.

I am not here to pick the fight (as I admit I know little of Romania's interaction with Russian Empire - RSFSR - Russian Federation). I am here to give a consolation point. If peoples are to hate each other for every historical transgression, there won't be a nation left free of all-consuming hate. Russia by your logic of who invaded it, cheated it or broke treaties with it, for example needs to hate Mongolia, Sweden, Poland, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, and, lately, US(NATO) to name just a few. Yet, you don't see much hate displayed, save by a few extremist types.
