Ultimately, Yanukovych fell on his own sword because he was just too corrupt, which angered the average Ukrainian whose living situation was getting worse. And he made newbie mistakes, like threatening the Maidan protesters with 15 years jail -- that was never going to end well.

Please show me the line between corrupt and "too corrupt"?

Such phrase as "too corrupt" should not even exist.

With only 1000 refugees to Crimea and none reported to eastern Russia , where did the rest go?

Majority of the refugees have arrived in Russia. Some have re-located to more peaceful areas of Donbass.

675,000 Ukrainians pour into Russia as ‘humanitarian crisis’ looms

http://rt.com/news/ukrainians-leave-russia-border-452/

I see that now they have no border pics , they seem to have learned from the last time when they showed imaged from the polish one ,.."by mistake".

This comment illustrates it best:

Quote
Dirk from Kiev 02.04.2014 04:15
Erik Brask 06.03.2014 15:26
675 000 Ukrainians fleeing? Is that really really true Smiley In that case it is a humanitarian disaster comparable with Syria. Anyone believes that? Anyone?

Nobody, not even RT, don't worry.

edit , another one:

Quote
Denis Torchilo 04.03.2014 11:00
The fact that people believe this bull to be true is just mesmerizing!! This is freaking Russian propaganda at its finest. A Ukrainian would rather get repeatedly kicked in the nuts for an hour then have to live in a country such as Russia!

Even Poland's GDP is greater than Ukraine and Kazakhstan's combined GDP.

Since Russia only has about $2T, I suppose Belarus will have to pick up the slack and supply the other $14T ~ $16T to be of comparable scale to the US and the EU.

I was talking about the military and the population. No where in the post I mentioned about the GDP.

You were talking about a trade union , and trading relates to the economy.
Now we're comparing the military?

Wow ,so this is the new varsovia pact that plans to have a military parade in berlin or a friendly trade union?

Some news from the Russian press:

Klicjko is now officially the mayor of Kiev:
http://www.interfax.ru/world/379447

Let's see how Maidan reacts to it...  Roll Eyes

Yanukovich, his sons, a number of officials and businessmen have filed a lawsuite with the European Court in the Luxembourg, protesting the legality of the sanctions:
http://www.utro.ru/articles/2014/06/03/1198875.shtml

Dniepropetrovs play the Wild West film script. They have set a bounty of $500,000 for capturing Carev.
http://russian.rt.com/article/34930

Yes, folks, that's half a million we are talking here. They obviously want to finish what Right Sector started, when they physically beat him out of the presidential run, as he, and not Poroshenko, was the favourite for the win.

Poroshenko reaffirmed the course towards Euro-integration:
During the same speech Poroshenko said that he is sure that "Crimea will be Ukrainian" and that "Ukraine will be together with Crimea"
http://www.interfax.ru/world/379454

Well, well, the the Euro-collision course has been confirmed. Now, where will the impact point be?

He must decide on one of the two:  Grin
Crimea will be Ukrainian = all 1.8 million Russians will be killed/deported
Ukraine will be together with Crimea = by that time, Crimea would have reached such high living standards, compared to Ukraine, that Ukraine will wish to join Crimea.

The whole speech was given in Poland where "Solidarity" order was given the "the big friend of Poland", Dzhimeljov.

“Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.”
“We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
“It is important to fight and fight again, and keep fighting, for only then can evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated.”

Didn't the heavily militarised island of Crimea hastily abandon their independence and join Russia (and raise lots of Russian flags for the cameras) because they were so terrified by those crazy Ukrainian nationalists and neo-Nazis who were attacking from the north?

Crimea tried to secede from Ukraine in 1992. But at that time the drunkard Yeltsin bowed down to his American puppet masters and rejected the merger request from Crimea. This time it was different. If they wanted Crimea to become a part of Ukraine, the Kiev junta should have taken steps to increase the confidence of the Crimeans. Instead they took the steps alienating them further, such as banning the Russian language and closing down the Russian language schools.

and raise lots of Russian flags for the cameras

Newsflash: lots of flags were also raised off-cameras. There were whole residential blocks where people were hanging Russian flags from their balconies.  Grin

Now, back to Ukraine (and Russia).

Putin finally made some statement today (after several days of complete silence from the Kremlin). Russia has no views on annexing the South-East. There are and never were any Russian army units in that region:
http://www.newsru.com/russia/04jun2014/putin.html
Damn. I have a bad feeling that Kiev will become emboldened by this statement, and that blood is going to flow in ever greater quantities now. Sad

I thought you guys hated the former USSR? Wasn't Yeltsin the first president of the free Russia, who brought about lots of reforms and helped end the Cold War? You seem so confused!

I am not confused. May be the problem with you is that you can't read and write.

Yeltsin wasn't a president. He was simply an American puppet. And so it is not much surprising that you are supporting the drunkard here.

This is how proxy wars are fought:

NATO ‘beefing up muscles’ over Ukraine crisis a mistake – Russia

Quote
“Some members of the council seem to believe that the situation there can be settled by force, in fact encourage Kiev to continue their punitive operation in eastern parts of Ukraine,” Churkin said. “We believe it’s a grave mistake and we believe the Security Council with its responsibility for international peace and security should seek peaceful solutions to any issue, which it might come in contact with.”

As for Yeltsin. Even during his rise to power, his agenda was unclear. Any popularity that he gained while denouncing his communist party membership, quickly waned during the years when the country's wealth was transferred into oligarch's hands (think "privatisation", monetary reforms, and Berezovskij, who was the real ruler behind the throne), while its significance on the international arena was dissipating.

Ukraine will get from US military aid for 5 million dollars (it's an Obamapromise so far, but still - that's not what Ukraine needs right now. It needs cool heads to negotiate and talk out of the crisis):

But now what, you're going to assassinate the character of every post-USSR leader before the T.V. celebrity/clown Putin came along?

I have problems only with Yeltsin and to (some extent) Gorbachev. Do you find any of my posts criticizing the other post-USSR leaders such as  Viktor Chernomyrdin or Sergey Kiriyenko?

Yeltsin and Gorbachev are the only two Russian leaders I can think of who actually took things seriously.

Yes. I can understand your love for Yeltsin.

Russia pulling back most troops from Ukrainian border - NATO commander

Russia is pulling back most of its troops from the Ukrainian border, NATO’s top military commander said on Wednesday. US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, NATO’s supreme allied commander Europe, also said that a portion of the Russian force “looks like it intends to remain,” Reuters reported. The commander also said that all steps being taken by NATO to reinforce its members in Eastern Europe would comply with NATO’s 1997 agreement with Russia.

No plans for separate Putin-Poroshenko meeting in France

The Kremlin does not rule out that President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko will meet during D-Day celebrations in Normandy, France, on June 6, although there will be no separate meeting. “No one is preparing a separate meeting, meanwhile, participants of war memorial events will stay together, in one group, therefore, contact is not ruled out,” Itar-Tass quoted Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying Wednesday. Putin will have separate meetings with British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Normandy.

The Investigation Committee of Russian Federation has created a special task force to investigate criminal acts of international scale against civilian population in Ukraine. The task force will continue its work until all Ukrainian military and civilian persons, who committed the crimes are prosecuted. The investigation will be assisted by the prosecutor offices of the regions that take in Ukrainian refugees.

Fox. They must have been given green light to publish it with such wording. I see two reasons:
1. The US is preparing to back-pedal on the Ukrainian involvement
2. (more likely) This should prepare the public for why US needs to spend more money on NATO and send money and weapons to Ukraine (to help poor, bullet-deprived National Guard)

Van Rompuy says Russia’s suspension in G8 ‘temporary’

It is premature to speak about when Russia can return to the G8, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said Wednesday. This is for the leaders of G7 to decide, he said, adding that the situation is assessed regularly. It is only a suspension, and not a permanent expulsion, RIA Novosti quoted him as saying. President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said earlier Wednesday that Moscow is not discussing returning to the G8, but that Russia remains open for contacts and cooperation.
http://rt.com/news/line/2014-06-04/#63232

Is it only me, or is someone getting nervous, because it seems Russia is not too eager to rejoin G7?
