So has nobody posted this yet here? https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/4tly0n/blockstream_announces_an_open_patent_pledge_and/This looks like Blockstreem wants full control over everything they can. I assume, this is for things like the Lightning Network. They can't change the Bitcoin Core license, so Dash should always be able to keep in line with Bitcoin Core. However, this centralization of the only hope to making Bitcoin usable is frankly.... a suicide pill IMO. What do you all think?

thanks for the reply, i removed the ~ question : i noticed dashwhale use a cron job as follows : */2 * * * * root /opt/dashwhale-updater/dwupdater why is root used in there ? and should root be used in the above mentioned cron job code to clear de debug.log ? They're showing you the system crontab syntax from /etc/crontab I wouldn't recommend manually editing this file. If you *need* to schedule a root crontab, just switch to root and add it to roots userland crontab But, in principle, I don't recommend running anything automatically as root that pulls updates. And, no, clearing the debug log as root user is a one-size-fits-all approach to the problem. It's better to perform maintenance as the user running the program. sidenote : i tried to get their Dashwhale remote monitoring part to work this morning, but i have dashd running from my home/user directory and it just wouldn't monitor it correctly. Problem was that i seem to have no rights to move files in the "opt" folder through WINSCP, so i ended up trying to adjust their code to home/user settings (which didnt work as i hoped). So now i'm just using their cron job code and files to restart my masternodes if necessary and disabled remote monitoring for now.
I haven't looked closely enough at the dashwhale code to have any advice, but a quick glance shows that it should be able to run from anywhere. /opt is just a standard place (in some distros/schools of thought) to place "other" stuff. You can put the updater in your home directory. It doesn't need any special permissions to run. The config file is json I believe. So you can't use any ' " , / \ in the dash.conf password. Be careful to keep all the formatting right(don't add any symbols or text other than what you need to change) in the config files and you should be good. Test running before you put in the crontab and it will tell you if it is working or what might be wrong. If it can't connect make sure you have ssl installed.

But, fair warning, I don't know if I'm going to attempt supporting Windows.
In all honesty, and I'm a windowz user, my family uses windowz and I have to manage all of our computers because they refuse to learn. So I'm the IP manager of our home network. Yet I see NO reason to support Windows beyond clients for the network. In fact, looking back on the first few pages of this thread when Dash was first launched, I roll my eyes at the "no windows support?" Even back then, windows was not the tool for this industry. It's a bad tool for Nodes as well. Linux is free. It is easily downloaded and installed, and if you want, you can run it with a GUI that is as easy to use as Windows. There is absolutely no reason to use Windows. There are several tutorials that get you up and running easily. It's all in the wiki. Setting up firewalls with UFW, or Uncomplicated Firewall, is SO EASY! So much easier than windows. You can really secure and understand exactly what you're letting though to your system through this easy tool (deny all, then work in what you want to let through, I think it's excellent) So, IMO, support should even be phased out for Windows except for the client. If someone wants to set up a mining rig, well, you can't use the machine while mining - it seriously becomes unusable for anything else - so then just put Ubuntu or your favorite version of linux on your box and mine away.

So they're basically saying "you can use our stuff for free as long as you acknowledge its ours". Yes, but in my opinion, it's a step in a direction I don't like. It's the start of a power play. On the other hand, I've been wanting Dash to make sure Dash innovations are covered so that nobody can claim a patent on "our" work (I don't code, LOL) and take away our rights. But I'm not knowledgeable in this law and am pretty sure it can't be done as it's on github and would be thrown out. I trust the team know what they're doing there

I'm interested in your opinion? For me it's just entertainment and interesting to see how these issues work out, I do not like ETH in any of it's forms, never had, DAO even less so, I put 100 BTC in to the ETH IPO which gave me 200,000 ETH to play with, but I got out fairly soon after the launch with a decent 100% + profit, though far too early as it turns out because ppl wanted for it to be BTC_2 and all get rich as the BTC early adapters did (or some of them) even though it had tons of unresolved problems, but silly me I should have anticipated that so a $3MM to $4MM lesson learned last January, oppps = never underestimate human greed and stupidity. I certainly didn't sell any DASH to play in the current ETH ETC craziness, though I did make a small foray in to another Alt recently in order to add a few BTC for my current DASH bid wall. Thanks, good GAME

Hi all, can anybody inform me on the status of that killer app that DASH is building ? Is it still in development or is there already a working version ?

The "killer app" I assume is referring to Evolution. Evolution has several layers that can be thought of like this: 1. More complex budgeting system with... something like 19 variables that can be used in the contracts (proposals). 2. Dash Drive - this needs to be in place for the rest of Evolution to work. This is a "sharded" storage system that can utilize the entire storage capacity of the network with many redundancies by "sharding" the information into pieces and simply keeping a certain redundancy of the information, randomly distributed, in the network. 3. DAPI is the API (or applications programming interface) that connects to the network, and allows any outsider to utilize the network for whatever purposes. This includes users who will be able to create a user account, with a name and password, which will hook up to the network and securely deliver their private information (account numbers, transaction history, balances, etc...) and allow others to rate that user (if they decide to have an known account for this purpose - merchants would be obvious users of this option) I'm probably forgetting something, but those are the major things that need to be developed for Evolution to function. Where are we now? Evan has almost completed the new budgeting system. We have just concluded the testing for many upgrades to the core wallet, mostly refining what was already there and preparing it for the new budgeting system. We expected the release of the new budgeting system after D10e conference last week, but it seems delayed. I'll guess that there were still more bugs to fix or else some minor thing Evan wanted to make better before committing the code. So we are awaiting the finalization of the budgeting commit, and then we'll test it, then release it. Testing usually doesn't take this long, but they don't want to do two major upgrades in a row (there is always a process of getting everyone to upgrade, and doing this 2 X is a waste of energy and annoying to users) So one update will come out probably (I'm guessing) a month?? after testing starts and will have maybe a month?? to get the network updated! I know a lot of work has been started on the DAPI and the Dash Drive. There is a lot of support work to be done for these and we already have approved funding to contract that work out so that we can realize a fully functional Evolution release much sooner than the original early to mid 2018 date originally quoted. This outside coding can be plugged into the system, and doesn't require any of Evan's brilliant ideas. It's less complex and normal type of stuff. So yah, I hope that answered your question??? Edit: LOL, otoh! Funny but true. It's got a ways to go but will be so damn powerful! It won't get blown up though, because there is no central point of failure. 4000+ Masternodes distributed all over the Earth is NOT a point of failure, LOL

On another point.... I haven't heard anyone talk about how creating Ethereum classic has effectively doubled the Ethereum holdings of those who held coins prior to the fork! If ECL continues to rise and become as expensive as Eth, then they've instantly doubled their worth. Anyone buying on one side or the other is really being a patsy.
That's another sickness to all of this. I find the whole thing repulsive - on both sides, though I know this is how the system works. I just hope Eth dies for forking and that they lose their lawsuit.
A forked network doesn't necessarily have a winner, it really just creates two coins. And in the process, doubles the holdings of those who owned prior to the fork. I never thought of it that way myself. I think we all assumed it meant the end of one of the forks, but obviously not.

Dash - like many other alts - got dumped heavily yesterday (on high volume) but despite that we're still bobbing around at the $9 or 0.014BTC level. I think that's quite impressive. Let's see if Dash stays at this price when the 500BTC of volume that left yesterday decides it wants to get back in... Walter

Lol, this f*cking fork broke everything, shame on ETH, if your software was not ready, you didn't had to open it to public!!!
I saw this for BTC : “If ETHc can apparently sustain itself against ETH, Bitcoin classic/unlimited/xt can definitely sustain itself against core. It’s been years of whining on the sidelines waiting for miners to act and come to our side. Let’s just do it!” (new chain for BTC with block size or other things community differ on)
And same for Lisk : "LRN we will be focused on the rapid and efficient development of Dapps/Bapps on the our LSK sidechain!"
O my god, so now when someone is not agreeing with the direction of a coin will make a fork, and new coin. We already have to much alt on the scene, please stop this....

There was quite a bit of hilarity in polo trollbox last night along those lines. This one made me loose my concentration while trading...
