KAT isn't the only threat they have; they also boast several shooters and taller, physical players. However, if we manage to contain KAT's presence in the paint, the games could become quite exhilarating. Gilas has strong outside shooters, and the fans' support could play a significant role in inspiring their performance. With Junemar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Japeth Aguilar, and Kai Sotto, these big players will likely pose challenges for KAT in the paint. While it's difficult to directly compare an NBA player to a non-NBA player, it's plausible that KAT could face double-team defenses from our bigs. I don't have my list since I don't want to disappoint myself. I know coach Chot will have a surprise for every gilas fan. It would be surprising if Abando isn't included in the final 12. I'm confident that fans would be disappointed and might criticize the coach's decision once again. You said it right, I would love to see how our big players will try all the possible way to stop KAT though it's not just him but there are other players who can really contribute, it's a selection of the best of the best from each country so we will expect tough competitions from each qualified teams that will play from each bracket. In terms of surprise, let see how controversial coach chot will be on his decision picking his final 12..

Gilas lost to Montenegro. Vucevic sparks second-half breakaway in Montenegro win over GilasGILAS Pilipinas fell under the might of a strong second half by Montenegro, losing 102-87, in their friendly on Sunday night at the Philsports Arena.
Trailing early on, the Black Mountain finally got into their rythym in the second period to take a close 44-42 lead with them to the locker room. If we're using the outcome of the match against Montenegro as a basis for evaluating Gilas' chances against the Dominican Republic, I believe there is still a possibility for Gilas to secure a victory. According to the rankings provided in the link below, Montenegro holds the 18th position, while the Dominican Republic is ranked 23rd. The proximity of their rankings suggests that the teams are relatively close in terms of skill. Even though we experienced a loss against Montenegro, it doesn't necessarily indicate complete domination, and there remains room for a competitive performance against the Dominican Republic. https://www.fiba.basketball/rankingmen

The second half is the most important, and that's where the Gilas are tested to see if they have good chemistry and are playing as one. There's no doubt about Vucevic being an NBA star and a dominant big man. However, when compared to KAT, we know who the better big man is, and it's obviously KAT. Not only can he penetrate inside, but he's also a good 3-point shooter. So, despite Montenegro having a better ranking than the Dominican Republic, I think the latter is the better team because the ranking was created when KAT was not yet confirmed to play.

I think these bigs are enough to slow down KAT. They do not necessarily need to totally stop him. They just need to slow him down and force mistakes and awkward shots. Individually, they will not slow down KAT but if a system is in place to counter KAT, then there is a possibility they can contain him. I don't have my list since I don't want to disappoint myself. I know coach Chot will have a surprise for every gilas fan. It would be surprising if Abando isn't included in the final 12. I'm confident that fans would be disappointed and might criticize the coach's decision once again. I would also like to see Abando play for Gilas this year. The last time he was in the lineup, he did not get enough playing time to showcase his skills. We all know that this guy has the heart for the game and will give everything just to win. Now that Scottie Thompson is cleared to play, I am guessing Abando will be included in the lineup. But we will see how the coach will choose the final 12. That's a double-digit loss, but it was close in the first half. The second half is the most important, and that's where the Gilas are tested to see if they have good chemistry and are playing as one. It is a good tune-up game. They lost double-digit but I guess they get what they needed to fix their system. I saw in the score box that Fajardo and Ramos were able to help in the scoring with 19 and 13 points respectively. That is already good because that could take away the pressure from Clarkson to score. Maybe they can fix the turnovers and protect the ball better. The Dominican Republic can be the better team, but Gilas was able to experience the brand of basketball in that region through Montenegro. They will be better prepared for KAT and the Dominican Republic when they meet come August 25.

Against Canada and Spain, KAT had a good percentage on the field goal so the opponent forced him to give up the ball to his teammates particularly on the corner where we can afford them taking rather than KAT taking the 3's or driving down the lane which could cause foul trouble on our bigs especially Junemar whom i think is a bit slow to guard KAT. I think we have the chance to win against DR if we can limit KAT's offensive output, let his teammates beat the Gilas not him terrorizing the paint and dominate the middle for that high percentage shots. BTW, Gilas lost to Mexico by 7 points, 84-77, Jordan Clarkson didn't play as he was rested but Gilas management assured fans that he is okay and good to go on the weekend.

In my opinion, there should be 2 bigs playing together for Gilas. One to guard KAT, and the other one should be waiting in the paint. This way, if KAT slips past his primary defender, there's still a big man who could defend him. The only big man who could potentially limit KAT in the paint is JMF. So maybe JMF and Sotto, or JMF and Edu, will be playing together for a good combination. However, this is just my opinion. KAT is an NBA-caliber player, and he likely has many skills that we may not have seen yet. BTW, Gilas lost to Mexico by 7 points, 84-77, Jordan Clarkson didn't play as he was rested but Gilas management assured fans that he is okay and good to go on the weekend.
Not so disappointing, in fact, by the looks of it, it seemed like we could really beat Mexico if Clarkson was present.

If he is at 100%, we can rely on his help to give KAT a hard time. I think the defense is more focused on KAT. I'm not sure if doubling him all the time would be a good solution, as this big man is also a good passer, with teammates who are strong attackers and some who are proficient 3-point shooters. This is a challenging task for Coach Chot; hopefully, he'll amaze us. BTW, Gilas lost to Mexico by 7 points, 84-77, Jordan Clarkson didn't play as he was rested but Gilas management assured fans that he is okay and good to go on the weekend.

However, all of that is just speculation, as Mexico would surely make adjustments if an NBA player were to play. Nonetheless, it was still a good game for them. At least in the last two losses, we didn't look so mismatched.

Or Edu and Kai together, still young and have that speed to counter KAT though in terms of experience both Japeth and JMF can also be combine in terms of trying to stop KAT inside, it will be depends from how the coaching staff will blend his players and how they will execute the system both on their offense and defense to earn a win. Gilas don't have that high percentage chance to win, but even they are really an underdog the chance of making an upset is still possible to happen.
I can only say that JC can provide more than 10 points if he's present during that game, and the kind of impact he will bring can change the momentum of the game.

If what i've read is true then we have the Filas Final 12.
According to Homer Sayson, which he wrote on Spin.Ph, below is the Gilas 12.
PG: Thompson, K. Ravena SG: Clarkson, Pogoy, Perez SF: Ramos, Malonzo, Abando PF: Edu, Aguilar C: Sotto, Fajardo
So, Kieffer is included in the final 12 and Newsome was cut which i think is fair because K. Ravena has the experience advantage over Newsome for the PG spot but either one of them is deserving to be included in the final roster, its just that Gilas only needs 12 players and players will be cut in the pool.
What do you think of the final 12 guys?

I believe the decision was fair and square. At least Abando was included, so it's his time to shine. Newsome is a good defender, I guess, but in terms of offense, he isn't that consistent. So, it's just right that he wasn't included in the lineup. As for Ray Parks, he can now focus on his love life with Zeinab. LOL.

~snip~ What do you think of the final 12 guys?
This is the best roster we have, and we need to utilize it. Honestly, I have a few doubts about whether we can really compete. I believe the coaching job will be more important in this game. However, it's a good thing that Coach Tim Cone is beside Coach Chot; maybe he will have a say sometimes, making the coaching even better. The selected players are very athletic: Malonzo, Abando, and Thompson. These guys will bring good energy to the team. Malonzo could be like Gabe Norwood, who is strong defensively. Let's see his contribution.

There was a rumor that Abando might not be selected, so it's pleasant news that he was included in the final roster. I've been able to watch some videos on YouTube regarding Italy, and from what I've gathered, this team employs a strategy similar to the GSW, and some say it might even be better. All five players on the floor are good 3-point shooters; they move the ball rapidly and with confidence. For our basketball enthusiasts, how do you think Gilas can overcome this system?

We need to focus with our defense and try to work with the offense, it will be tough but our squad have that capability just need to execute good plays and good chemistries inside the court, we can't measure what the national/gilas have until we witness them competing with strong opponents that they've got on their brackets. My take on gilas is they have the pieces and they've got the talents, it's more on how the coach will use that and how he will manage to bring the right sets of players to compete.

What we need is consistency, as we cannot win without it. Additionally, we have to be aggressive with our defense, as our opponents are skilled shooters. Just a split-second opening near the rim, and they would seize that opportunity. My take on gilas is they have the pieces and they've got the talents, it's more on how the coach will use that and how he will manage to bring the right sets of players to compete. Coach Chot has received a lot of criticism already, but he has not been replaced. It's the SBP's fault here.

Are you gonna take the moneyline or the spread?

I think we need to carefully consider this, especially if we are betting a significant amount of money. We still have plenty of time, as the game will commence tomorrow evening. Thus, we can conduct our own research before risking our money. If we bet now, we might be basing our decision on emotions. Of course, we will support the Philippines no matter what. However, if we don't find any value or advantage, putting a small amount would be sufficient, I guess.

I want to see the highlights of Abando, showcasing what he usually does with his team. With current system what Gilas have I bet they are way behind on Dominican republic. But still we don't know what will be the outcome this since the current players of Gilas is more talented than last year, so lets just see there if they are really ready yo face bigger opponent since if they could successfully shutdown KAT team then we can say that they have big chance to advance on next round. Tomorrow is exciting day so maybe will wait for few hours before placing my bet.

Understandable though to see such a huge gap in the odds provided the Dominican Republic is a powerhouse team regardless if Karl Anthony Towns is there or not. Aside from that, rankings play a big factor in odds distribution regardless if it's a host country or not. If someone will have to bet on our Gilas, it's not about the hue gap but rather to show support from the country. I myself, understand the distance between Gilas and the Dominicans but no way I will support the latter for an obvious reason. Though technically, performance is the key, I hope the expected big boost from the crowd will fuel the Gilas to play at their top level.

To be safe, betting on the handicap might be the right choice here. +10.5 seems reasonable, considering it's their first game and they have the energy and the crowd's support. The opponents are quite strong, so maybe we can compensate with our 3-point shooting, as it's difficult to penetrate the interior, especially with Town there. I guess no big man has a favorable matchup against Town; he's capable of dominating everyone. Here's the roster for Dominican Republic. https://basketnews.com/news-193501-karl-anthony-towns-headlines-final-12-man-dominican-republic-roster.htmlI think the size average isn't that much compared to the Philippines.

I have taken the +10 in this game. Watching this match is going to be enjoyable since it's our own team playing on their home court; thus, we need to support them. I haven't witnessed an upset yet; I thought Angola would be able to give Italy a competitive game, but they faltered in the 4th quarter, resulting in a loss by double digits. In this game, every quarter is crucial; if Gilas gets off to a good start, they also need to finish strong. GOOD LUCK, GILAS PILIPINAS!
