Safecoins or Ether? Hmm... Roll Eyes

Why not both ?  just don't tell me you are actually investing in only one project at a time..

Even if you use Bitcoin through Tor, the way transactions are handled by the network makes anonymity difficult to achieve. Do not expect your transactions to be anonymous unless you really know what you're doing.

To be honest, I don't see the point in holding ether. The coins are supposed to fuel the contracts, they said, whatever that means. How the economics behind that work, I don't know either. We know the value of safecoins, they will be needed to store data on the network.

Ethereum and Maidsafe are focused on quite different things right now. Ethereum is more about the contracts in the form of a decentralized computer, while Maidsafe is more about building a decentralized sort of cloud. Yes, they'll both run Apps in the future and both have a cryptocoin, but on Maidsafe (or actually "Safenet" as the network is called) there's no blockchain. Safecoins work more like digital cash where there's no registration in a ledger. They can be exchanged in under a second is the assumption by the Devs. Bitcoin and other crypto's use "Miners" to protect the network. In Safenet people can become "Farmers" where they provide storage and bandwidth. So when you start Farming, your harddrive will fill up with 1 MB. "Chunks" from the network. When these Chunks are called, and you deliver you can earn a little Safecoin.

Here's the latest Dev-update by the team (they provide one every week on Tuesday)

https://forum.safenetwork.io/t/maidsafe-dev-update-3rd-august-2015/4643

It seems that the first installers are coming in the next couple of weeks. Than we're all able to test the network a bit. It's also possible that things will work well so that the network will stay "live" and Safecoin and Farming are added after the next Dev-sprint. That way the network could launch in steps adding elements time after time.

Here's the latest Dev-update by the team.

Summary:

- A lot of work has been done on routing.
- Compression has been introduced in self encryption to enable more efficient use of storage space.
- Crust (Safenet's ip-layer) is coming along nicely with the integration of rust-utp.
- Musl is enabled so should be more easy to build installers for Linux, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc., over a variety of hardware architectures x86, x64, AMD, Intel, etc
- Work has continued on the desktop app, including drag-n-drop capabilities and support for DNS*.
- Work continued on the installers and Firefox plugin. Soon people can try Safenet at home, register a URL in the network, upload a file, view a file in Firefox with the plugin.

*DNS stand for Decentralized Naming System it allows people to register a URL within Safenet.
Bitcointalk could be hosted on Safenet at safe:bitcointalk for example.

The Dev-team released some executable files for everyone to play with. The things you can do with these binaries are:

- Start some Vaults which create a little local SAFE Network on your computer (3 running Vaults would be great).
- Register your URL on your own SAFE Network using the DNS Tool (Decentralized Naming Service) on SAFE.
- Upload your own website or a test-website to your local SAFE Network.
- View your website on your own SAFE Network using Firefox (Waterfox for Windows) and the provided SAFE-Plugin.

This is what it looks like:

As you might have noticed, the http: and common URL's are not used on the SAFE Network. Everybody will be able to register their own domain name like:

In this case WWW is used, but it will also be possible on the network to just use a domain name like    safe:yourwebsite   In that case, the index.html is loaded as your main page.

So, what does this show us?

- The Dev-team shows us a proof of concept for the SAFE Network, including it's own decentralized naming service (DNS).
- On the SAFE Network, when you upload (PUT) data, your files are chunked and encrypted (using self-encryption) on your machine.
- The chunks are spread across the Vaults in the network (in this case your local network with 3 Vaults) in a way that the owner of the Vault doesn't know what's in there.
- If the owner of the data decides to make it public, all other users can view that data as well, making the SAFE Network a possible alternative for the normal internet.
- Using DNS people can register their own domain names on the SAFE Network. No need for long and impossible to remember url's like the ones used on TOR.

In the coming weeks, the Dev-team will work on the software so that a global network can be started. That would include the possibility for people to upload a website to the SAFE Network,
where chunks of data are stored on Vaults all around the globe (no longer local). When people register their domain name, others can look up their website using Firefox and the SAFE-Plugin.

For more information and a guide to test the software:

There are executables for Linux, Mac OS and Windows (so far only 64-bit).
