I think it may be a little of both. And there seems to be a few coins that are implementing the use of HDD mining (POC).
I do not understand it either really. As it is much cheaper to mine and buy hardware for.
Just makes sense. Especially, with the difficulty of btc or even ltc. No one can really make any money off BTC unless you have a farm with cheap electricity costs.
Makes me wonder why they still mine.
Anyone who is new in crypto-currency should definitely check out HDD minable coins. Much before they spend hundreds and hundreds on asics or GPUs. Would be great to learn with. Not only that they can set up a 20TB Farm for around $500. And have more mining capability then 80% of the miners. It really should be a noticed concept.
In my opinion it is better then 85 percent of other coins with real people behind the coin and not scam DEVs or plain pumpers and dumpers.
Its a great coin and people need to notice it.

Oh and one good thing is that the price of Burst seems to be slowly working it was upward.
My ticker today says 22 for Burst. A week or so ago it was 13 so its close to being doubled in price since well a week or so ago.
People seem to be buying it.
Bittrex, Polo, I know people have been. As I'm on both of them exchanges.

I think it may be a little of both. And there seems to be a few coins that are implementing the use of HDD mining (POC).
We should see quite a few of new solutions come out in 2016 that make use of spare computing resources (not just hard drive space). In maidsafe they use the term "proof of resource" where users can contribute CPU, bandwidth, and hard drive space to their ecosystem of apps or mining safecoin itself by storing encrypted chunks of files for other users. If I had to choose between a system that fills up hard drives for the sole act of mining or something that makes use of the system for a more useful contribution I would choose the latter. If Burst is not off the ground yet and about half of all coins are mined, when the other half are all mined why would anyone want to buy Burst when mining is over? You cannot earn any interest like a POS coin (unless you seek assets out and take those risks). What incentive is there for people to run nodes after mining has ended? I am also surprised a clone of Burst has not been created with a different coin distribution/mining process.

I do not know if this will be an incentive for some or not but I am currently working on features for the upgraded playground.
The initial launch of the playground had minimal exposure. Currently have 36 members.
I am working on the front and back ends. Not of the coin itself but of funationality of the playground.
It will allow for direct exchange of alt coins for Points (1 point = 1 Burst) Currently it will support 23 alt coins that can be exchanged directly for Busrt coin. So you would be able to exchange different coins for Burst and vise versa. Sort of like a mini exchange that also funtions as a mixer. This does include BTC aswell. You would be able to exchange burst for other currencies aswell. Even when the mining is complete you would still have the ability to use the coin. As we all know mining doesn't control the price. Seems more of popularity, function, meaning. Plus a few others. Even though mining does have an impact in the equatiion.
Either way if everyone stops mining I'll still be mining as I am building a small HDD farm that will only funtional for Burst no matter what coin comes out. So I know I will be contributing to the block chain. I am sure others will as well.
Funtionality of the coin threw the playground will also consist of gambling. This is already being developed as of now. Currently what is in the workings are a small casino. Poker, dice, and slots just for burst. Someone in the exchanges will always be selling their burst so the cross for exchangeable currencies can always be used.
I am not saying that the playground will keep burst afloat but it should contribute to the use, funtionality, and tradability of the coin if people know the services exist.
So I hope this will be some incentive for people to use the coin. The mixer alone should help as you can use pretty much any standard currency to pass threw burst to be used or exchanged for another currency off of the main stream exchanges. There will be a background exchange hosted at the Playground so the coins being exchanged will happen right at the playground. But no one will acutely see this. So coins can be distributed to whoever needs them for no matter what the reason.
So basically it will be a Altcoin exchange with casino, investment, assets, and information based off of Burst coin. The main role will be burst. So when the markets are not in your favor coins could be exchanged to another coin that has the possibility of a higher market price. But Burst during this process will always be in the mix.
The playground is basically what it was before as stated. Just now the possibilities of implimentation have changed for the Playground to add more features to support Burst with almost any other coin while still driving burst. This should give anyone who holds burst the opportunity to use the coin rather then hold the coin later on. While transactions will still be used on main stream exchanges to contribute to the buy and sell market of burst coin.
Loads of ideas and only half are doable. So I plan to impliment all ideas that I know can be done.
All the specifics will be announced when they are implimented. But for now Burst is what it is.
People should still be interested in this coin. As it is a first in this concept.
I know it can be further developed and should be.
We need that new [ANN] completed as well as fix all issues with information being able to be spread.
I do believe that some have been pushed away simply because they can't get all the information they need.
I know the current [ANN] has a bunch do dead links. Aswell as some support forums are down, non excistant, and block explorers are showing last block of 2 months ago.
We need one rock solid explorer that funtionality and is geared toward burst and not other sources.
Burstcoin.info has a load of info. However there are links that are non funtioning, links that need to be removed, and other small blemishes.
I think if we get everything re rolling more people will get involved.
But we need the look and feel to be genuine.
Thoughts?

Maybe soon people will realize the true potential of BURST and other HDD minable cryptocurrencies, and will start mining them like crazy. And one thing too is that HDD mining is more energy efficient than mining with ASICs. I wonder what will happen to Burst once mining has finished. Perhaps, dev could improve it and make it a PoS coin by then.

I`m still working on my project to raise capital for INCOME, but it takes longer than expected, it is hard to acquire bitcoins, and I don't really plan to trade more altcoins for the moment because of their uncertainty. However with PND we might see some results pretty soon. I will give more details soon, probably by this weekend we will see results.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make Burst wallet accessible on any device? Let's say I want to see the Burst wallet/client on another computer remotely...can I do that? I might not know much about networking, but if I could access the wallet via localhost, then it could be configured to be accessed remotely right? Sorry for asking, just wanted to know if it could be done and if its safe to do so.

In the nxt-default.properties file located in the conf directory, all I can see is the following line of code: # Hosts from which to allow http/json API requests, if enabled. nxt.allowedBotHosts=127.0.0.1; localhost; [0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1]; Is that the line where I should modify it to allow connections from other devices? If so, then I would place the ip address of an specific device there, next to localhost? Am I right?

i do not have the computer with the wallet here, try with the 2 line here:
# Hosts from which to allow http/json API requests, if enabled. nxt.allowedBotHosts=127.0.0.1; localhost; [0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1]; 192.168.0.4;
or
# Host interface on which to listen for http/json API request, default localhost only. # Set to 0.0.0.0 to allow the API server to accept requests from all network interfaces. nxt.apiServerHost=127.0.0.1

Thanks for your reply. I will check this out, especially the first line with the ip address of my laptop. I was thinking of placing 0.0.0.0 instead to allow connections from any device, if that is ok. If this works, I will be able to make a Burst service out of it.

miners also get fees. Theoretically, when coins are mined they should be quite well distributed. After that most miners will find something else to mine, but then, the reward will be big for the remaining miners, so BURST will be just fine, and from there on build value as the number of BURST does not go up and up like with the inflating PoS coins. With BURST you know that your BURST will retain their rarity and therefore also value. If we make a mining scheme that slowly destroys BURST value, it will not be more money for the individual miner, just way more miners. therefore i strongly advise against going PoS. Instead we should just accept fewer TBs once all coins are out. As BURST gains value due to its many different uses, more miners will join because each BURST rewarded from transactions is worth more and more.
