It's finally happened guys -- the BUTTVAST has DiiiiiiED!! The place is SO devoid of life that one can't even run a gigantic prized trivia anymore, at even primetime gambler active hours -- hardly anyone even deigns to try & answer for a chance to win -- asleep at the wheel, dead site!!! RIP BV. Lasted 8 years. Good times. Now to fade into quiet obscurity..

If the prize pool is gigantic indeed, even a dead site can be revived with new signups  Grin, so it's just a matter of proper advertising.
Making an announcement here + starting new topic in games and rounds (which is allowed) should do the trick if you give a little notice in advance.
I remember participating in trivia on some other site years ago. It was fun, but obviously everyone was googling for answers, which took away a lot of joy from it.
1043  Economy / Economics / How do we profit from Canadian recession? on: September 02, 2023, 09:54:27 PM
What is really going on with Canada? Is it really that bad as the internet says?
If so, what's the best way to profit from the (alleged?) recession? Shorting CAD, TSX, or both? Or maybe it's all already priced in?

1044  Economy / Speculation / Re: What if there is no crypto bull run for next 10 years ? on: September 02, 2023, 09:36:00 PM
It is during the bull run that the manipulator makes his main money. Therefore, it just doesn't make sense for him to cancel the alt season. At the moment bitcoin is the main means of attracting attention to cryptocurrencies, but if people don't see big "X's", the interest will fade quickly. Right now, making 2-3x on bitcoin is good, but it's not enough.

Market manipulators can make money in multiple different scenarios, whenever they can predict the price action, thay can capitalise on that, whether price goes up or down. They don't need bull run to earn great profits. They can do the same with smaller movements in either direction.
Retail investors aiming only for > x100 opportunities haven't been relevant for a good while now. By definition, they don't operate with big funds, as no one would be betting any serious money on a very risky assets (only such can offer yields of that level).
1045  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: After all these years on: September 02, 2023, 09:24:27 PM
I don't have the data but I doubt that XRP is any close to become more mainstream than Bitcoin as a global currency.

I don't even know how these 2 can be compared. We all know what the Bitcoin is, but I think many are confused about what XRP is. XRP =/= Ripple. Ripple is a global payments network offering multiple solutions, but some of them don't require any use of the XRP token at all. So it's entirely possible that Ripple can achieve global success and yet XRP could fall to zero.
That's the risk of investing in cryptos that promise to be the new cutting-edge tech - you never know how will that pan out, plus, there will always be newer projects promising even better things.
1046  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lessons Taken from Previous Bull Markets: How Will Your Approach Change? on: September 02, 2023, 09:09:46 PM
The only things I've learned from the previous cycles is that bitcoin is the king and all the rest are shitcoins that come and go and that there's no bad moment to buy bitcoin, as it eventually surpasses all earlier highs in a perpetual uptrend. There's really no special plan or anything, but being stubborn and patient when it comes to my bitcoin.

My strategy is to buy as much as I can of this great thing and hold it for as long as I can because...
It's going up up forever Laura.

I understand this post was probably only half-serious, but just wanted to point out that the "holding forever" strategy is pointless and you might as well just send all your bitcoins to the Bitcoin Eater address.
There's nothing wrong in taking profits from holding bitcoins eventually and using them to finance your life goals etc.
I think many people would benefit greatly from figuring out what is that they actually want from life and setting clear (and realistic) goals. Sounds obvious but vast majority of us live without any plan.
1047  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: September 01, 2023, 03:10:08 PM
Yeah dunno...  Namajunas kinda looks frail for a fighter at 115.  I guess we'll just have to see how she looks when she faces off with Fiorot in a couple of hours.

She always looked frail, even as a strawweight  Grin Yey, she would often find a way to knock other girls out with that skinny arms.
The one factor I haven't consider is jet lag. No idea when has she arrived to Paris, but hopefully she had enough time to adapt. I've heard many fighters saying that's actually a bigger problem that anyone could think.
As much as I don't support female martial arts, I think that one would be much more interesting than Gane Vs Spivac.
1048  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: August 31, 2023, 07:47:31 PM
She isn't the favorite by the way so there is something we may have missed here, either her year of inactivity or she had an injury that's why she rested that long.

She moved up a weight class, so will be fighting bigger opponent than ever before. There's also no reach advantage for Roe this time (I think), the fact she's fighting on the enemy's turf and that Fiorot has her momentum and is on the uptrend.
Over a year break is also a factor, but could be due to UFC being disappointed in absolute lack of action in her fight against Esparza, but could be due to mental attitude and just wanting to take a break.

I'm not a fan of either but Namajunas is famous for winning fights even when she's the underdog. Take for example her fight with Weili who she defeated twice.

Yeah, many fighters perform better as an underdogs and Rose is one of them. She also defeated Jedrzejczyk twice in a title bout and made it look easy.
I won't be betting any money, but hope she wins.
1049  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Spot Bitcoin ETF Approval Odds Rise to 75% (Bloomberg) on: August 31, 2023, 07:30:02 PM
The situation I was referring to is not bitcoin related. It is the battle this investment management company has with the US government over their "freedom of investment".
To put simply BlackRock wants to take their money (about $15 trillion if we count msci) to more solid economies such as China and US regime doesn't want to allow that because that would be the end of dollar hegemony and US economy.

Political sympathies aside, US will care about their own interests just as China cares about theirs. Especially in a current time of possible Taiwan conflict looming ahead.
I believe you're referring to BlackRock getting probed by US House Committee on investing in blacklisted Chinese entities? If so, I don't think SEC actually had anything to do with it.

It is usually not the ETF approval itself that causes the price spikes and bull runs but all the lemming traders on exchanges who decide: "Hey, this is my big day to get rich!", open a few long positions and buy some extra bitcoins, wait for everyone to copy them, and then close the positions once they hit profit and the brakes are slammed on the ETF craze.

You can't really say if it "usually" is or isn't an ETF approval causing bull runs, as no spot Bitcoin ETF has been approved yet. But the lemmings (aka retail investors) have way less influence than they had at the beginning.
1050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOW DO WE TRANSFER BITCOIN WEALTH TO HEIRS AND THE NEXT GENERATION on: August 31, 2023, 06:17:12 PM
Even though Hal is a smart guy.  Many of us already realize that there are problems with safety boxes, and surely we do not know the details of exactly how Hal saved his keys in safety deposit boxes, but that could be one point of failure if that might have had been the ONLY place that he had his keys and/or other instructional information related to his bitcoin.

Good point, but the sad truth is you have to store your private keys somewhere. If it's a physical location (be it for paper wallets or electronic devices) it'll always bear a risk of someone unauthorised getting their hands on it.
That could be mitigated by splitting it in 2 or more parts and store each separately. In Hal's case - he referred to one box, but at the time he passed away (2014) nobody really knew where BTC will go, so, I reckon, at that time it was probably not the most valuable asset of the inheritance. And we all tend to apply level of security proportional to the value of what we try to secure.
1051  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: August 31, 2023, 05:01:10 PM
Sheeesh, Conor McGregor again… Arent we are giving him to much attention? I will try to explain my thoughts. The guys claims to be a fighter, while doing zero to have a fight. If he really intended to return, he would be first in line to pass USADA test, first to select opponent. What we have a guy who is like girl on period, dont know when he would fight, says this year or next year, or not gonna fight at all. And I am afraid, that even if we see him in octagon, his opponent gonna finish hin in first round (in case his opponent is not a guy about to retire). We await a fight so much, that gonna last less than 5 min with a loss fighter we wait so much.

I couldn't agree more. All his talk is just a hot air, but just by looking at him I have an impression of looking at already retired fighter, it's just the vibe he's sending out. It's like all the competiveness and drive are gone. Even before the injury he wasn't looking great in the 2nd fight with Poirier, and the level in UFC only keeps getting up. And, as someone mentioned, no fighter has ever returned from a broken leg injury to a previous level.
There's a big chance his next fight will be his last and I think he realises that.

Namajunas replay...  Anybody think she'll win vs Fiorot?  It's at 125.

Yup. If she's mentally in the right place on Saturday, she's my favourite.
1052  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: I will pass KYC later is a bad idea on: August 30, 2023, 10:08:11 PM
By the way, there is another huge disadvantage of going through the KYC in advance: if we are dealing with a dishonest casino, then they can make money by selling our data to third parties. Judging by the fact that there are a lot of similar goods on dark markets, many services earn money by this (I don’t believe that all of them were “hacked”).

Good point, but even legit casinos (or other businesses) can have customer data information "leaks" which I suspect, a lot of times, could be due to some rogue employees stealing and selling data on the dark market. This happens on all levels, including banks.
1053  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: August 30, 2023, 09:55:34 PM
Another fight I am really excited to watch is co-main event because of Rose Namajunas,

Yeah, this one could be interesting and Namajunas is potentially a good value bet (x2.40). In the past, her problem was that her performances were inconsistent, but she tended to do well against dangerous, high-ranked opponents and all her losses happened to not-very-highly-skilled rivals (Esparza, Kowalkiewicz).
Manon Fiorot is definitely dangerous, so Rose shouldn't have any problems with motivation. But moving up in a weight class is always an uncertainty.
1054  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Spot Bitcoin ETF Approval Odds Rise to 75% (Bloomberg) on: August 30, 2023, 09:43:51 PM
Bloomberg’s Balchunas noted that the 75% odds are connected to a spot Bitcoin ETF approval this year. However, he added that those odds would increase to 95% by the end of 2024. Moreover, he stated that the “unanimity and decisiveness of the ruling were beyond expectations,” leaving the SEC in a difficult place.

This is important information here. Reading only the title of this thread can be misleading. Balchunas thinks it's almost certain that spot ETF will get approval, but it's a question of when not if.
Also, BlackRock has an almost 100% ETF approval rate (>99.8% per quick google search) and I don't think giants like them would even bother filing for it if they didn't know it'll get approved.
1055  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOW DO WE TRANSFER BITCOIN WEALTH TO HEIRS AND THE NEXT GENERATION on: August 30, 2023, 09:32:46 PM
This thought have been bothering me for a while and I feel we can discuss it here. Many people that are building their Bitcoin portfolio are doing it to also save for the coming generation. However, how this wealth will be transferred to the heirs and the next generation and how this wealth will be preserved without being lost or causing problems still remain unclear.

The problem is real and I'm sure there are significant amounts of btc lost forever due to death. Most people don't think about it, thinking they have plenty of time, but then they die suddenly and their stash could be lost for good. Although every holder has their private keys/pass phrases stored somewhere, so technically speaking, they should still be recoverable if you know what to look for.

But if we're talking about building intergenerational wealth, this implies you already have heirs that you trust, so the simplest solution would be just to share private keys with them, or just store them in a safe deposit box like Hal Finney did.

(...)
That's my story. I'm pretty lucky overall. Even with the ALS, my life is very satisfying. But my life expectancy is limited. Those discussions about inheriting your bitcoins are of more than academic interest. My bitcoins are stored in our safe deposit box, and my son and daughter are tech savvy. I think they're safe enough. I'm comfortable with my legacy.
1056  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has Bitcoin Helped Create Big Changes In Your Life? on: August 30, 2023, 09:09:24 PM
Has Bitcoin Helped Create Big Changes In Your Life?

I would say no. It did help me change the way I look at things like money, value or investing, as I was fairly ignorant of those things before I learnt about Bitcoin. But I wouldn't consider those "big" changes. Then again, you never know where your life would be if you did things differently in the past. So maybe BTC had a big impact on my life but I just don't realise it.
1057  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: August 29, 2023, 09:36:15 PM
Michael Chandler is preparing hard for the match up if you follow his social media and the match up against Conor McGregor is an golden opportunity for him to make a substantial amount of money and hopefully he will be able to fight him.

I have no doubt that Chandler will be ready, the question is if McGregor will. As far as we know he hasn't re-entered the USADA pool yet, and the soonest he can fight is 6 months from re-entering (unless they make an exemption for him).

That being “a regular guy” from Bo Nickal might cause his path to a title foght be longer than usually. UFC dont like calm, shy, regular and not interesting fighters.

I knew who he was even before I saw his face or saw any of his fights, because Dana White was propping him up on many different occasions. So it doesn't look like they're trying to side-line him because his not entertaining enough, but more like his building his career at the right pace. He already pretty famous for a guy with only 5 fights who's not even ranked in the top ten.
And it's not like being loud and mouthy = more entertaining. Everyone trying to be next McGregor became annoying and gets boring pretty quickly (see Paddy Pimblett)

1058  Economy / Speculation / Re: What if there is no crypto bull run for next 10 years ? on: August 28, 2023, 08:59:21 AM
What if there is no crypto bull run for next 10 years ? Will you give up all your investments and get out of crypto because of this ? Or do you you have even more broader horizon and can wait longer to see the next bull run ?

If that was to happen and we won't see a new ATH in the next decade, Bitcoin's ability as a store of value would be questionable.
But it kind of depends on what do you mean. We might never see another bull run (meaning a sharp increase in price) but we might see e.g. Bitcoin moving up slowly and gradually, not making anyone a millionaire overnight, but beating up inflation rates (i.e. becoming something similar to gold). Such scenario would probably be better for Bitcoin than the bull-run cycles, although it would attract a different type of investors.
1059  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: After all these years on: August 28, 2023, 08:46:52 AM
After all these years Bitcoin still remains an investment rather than a daily payment system, will there ever come a day where Bitcoin will be use generally as a paying system instead of what we are seeing right now?

XRP for example and few others are partnering with banks for international transactions, if seems that these projects are 100 times closer to been a daily payment system than Bitcoin and this saddens me.

Investments and means of payment are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Bitcoin (even including the lightning network)  is not ready to act as a global payment system.
The major reason for people not using Bitcoin (or any other crypto) for everyday transactions is that they're not earning in crypto but in fiat. Nobody will be purchasing crypto for fiat just to pay for their groceries with crypto. That simply wouldn't make sense.
There's also the "bad money drives out good" principle:

Quote
In economics, Gresham's law is a monetary principle stating that "bad money drives out good". For example, if there are two forms of commodity money in circulation, which are accepted by law as having similar face value, the more valuable commodity will gradually disappear from circulation.

Ripple's bank partnership also doesn't mean that the world will turn to using XRP. As far as I know, it's not clear if the XRP would be utilised at all in such systems.

Do you think that Bitcoin been decentralised will draw it back from becoming something like what XRP and Chain Link are achieving right now? Should we just for once shut up about Bitcoin becoming a well acknowledged payment solution and focus on it becoming only asset?

Nah. To succeed as an investment asset, Bitcoin must have the abilities of a payment system. It doesn't have to be the best but has to be good enough to be used for transacting if/when you need to.
1060  Bitcoin / Press / [2023-08-26] Forbes: Leak Reveals Elon Musk, X And Wall Street Could Be About... on: August 28, 2023, 08:23:36 AM
With not much newsworthy going on in the crypto space recently, Forbes publishes this article. As with any article that is based on a "leak", take it for what it's worth.

Leak Reveals Elon Musk, X And Wall Street Could Be About To Cause Bitcoin And Crypto Price Chaos With ‘PayPal Update’

https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2023/08/26/leak-reveals-elon-musk-x-and-wall-street-could-be-about-to-cause-bitcoin-and-crypto-price-chaos-with-paypal-update/

Quote
Tesla billionaire and X owner Elon Musk has a habit of causing wild swings for the bitcoin price and other major cryptocurrencies (with Musk lobbing a grenade into the crypto market earlier this month).

The bitcoin price has swung wildly over the last few months as economic and regulatory pressures mount—though traders are now braced for a $15.5 trillion September Wall Street earthquake.

Now, after a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) insider has warned bitcoin and crypto buyers to beware of Binance, a leak has suggested Musk could turn X (Twitter) into an "updated version of PayPal

Musk "continues to have conversations [with] top Wall Street executives on [the] future of X," Fox Business News correspondent Charles Gasparino, posted to X.

"Seems to be settling, they tell me, on a new-fangled payment system, [an] updated version of PayPal. It will offer low transaction costs (as opposed to credit cards) and monetize user info."
