1421  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Use Beagleboard/Pandaboard to run FGPA mining rig on: March 01, 2012, 01:03:50 AM
Just ran cgminer on my router with CPU mining enabled for the hell of it (because I can).
Over the 20 mins I ran it, it averaged a whopping 0.1MH/s, and didn't submit a single share... it was taking so long, the long-poll came around and reset the work.

Incidently, memory usage was ~1900bytes or maybe Kbytes (I'm not sure what HTOP lists mem in), either way, nice small footprint.
Also, the shares counters for the CPU made there way across the screen every update, must be some problem with ncurses there.
I am pretty sure you are killing your router with that.  The CPUs usually have pretty poor cooling.

Indeed. Most of them get very hot.

I would discourage trying to mine on any router simply because the heat mining produces was not meant to be dissipated into that tiny router case.

Maybe try adding a heatsink and fan and air paths if you want to do that.

since this is becoming more and more of an issue gox really should give security to people who are asking for it...

BIP16 for mt.gox

Yeah. By the looks of things as they stand now, I will be grateful if we have this damn BIP before 2013 block reward drop Roll Eyes

A form of multi-sig or 2 factor authentication for Bitcoin itself really would be neat but Deepbit needs to approve it first Tongue

What about a BFL farm if they can meet the demand or a farm of Rig Box devices ?

That would be something new and not done before in the community.
1424  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Does windows really use more power than linux? on: March 01, 2012, 12:41:28 AM
okay, but once running is the power consumption i'm talking about, who cares what it uses for the first 60 seconds. Our dedicated rigs run 24/7 for weeks/months.

I just have felt there is this bias towards linux for power reasons which is unjustified from my own tests. I understand people want linux because it's free, but due to my business, I have plenty of windows licenses to use.

Also, i have found windows to be 10x easier to use and WAY more stable so far. Just the ability to swap out video cards without issue is huge. Every time I did that with linux the system crashed and required me to reload the USB stick.

Also as far as remote access, it is not hard in windows anymore than it is with linux. Gotomypc works fine. Or in my case I can have them all connected to my server at work and access them from anywhere in the world with a nice easy to use GUI.

considering SSD's at 30gb are going for under $50, this whole linux usb thing is not looking too good to me anymore personally.

Can you even boot Windoze from USB? Anyway it's not safe for the average Bitcoin user due to all the malware and viruses.  Plus Linux has proved its stability while Windoze will restart nearly every 24Hrs if you have updates on?

I think Windows 7 can boot from USB.

Even though I am a Linux guy, I think W7 really is smooth from Microsoft and a viable contender to Linux.

Support ( first ever edition to do so ) for TRIM, GPT, UEFI, XP mode, fast, lean etc. much better than Vista and even XP but Linux still is better !
1425  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ATI 5870 Question on: March 01, 2012, 12:32:36 AM
I have wondered for years why the mac parts sell for so much more on ebay... I really had no idea about this.
Most interesting thing I've read on here all day!

Yeah.  Think of it as DRM for people who like closed sandbox systems.  Take exact same hardware that works in a PC, add some "magical nothing" which enables the Mac OS to graciously allow it's presence and slap $100 (or more to the price).

"Magical nothing" sums up my opinions of Apple products entirely... It's all the same shoddy hardware that manufactured PC's have, but something magical about the sleek white and silver logo makes it worth 80-200% more than the lovely white-boxes we've all built from scratch.

Totally agree.

Anyone that buys into the Apple hardware or software or other products ( iPhone, iCrap etc. ) needs to do some research first.

You can get much better price / performance ratio out of non-Apple parts !

I am not one to pay for shiny plastic or for the "fashion" or brand etc.
1426  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Does windows really use more power than linux? on: March 01, 2012, 12:31:23 AM
When I first used Vista many moons ago with 4GB of RAM it would boot up and use nearly 2GB without using anything just after boot.  When I use Lubuntu it boots into less than 0.25GB of RAM  Huh

AFAIK that does not affect power usage at all.

Using 1 GB and 4 GB of RAM on a 4 GB stick = no difference in power at all because all of the RAM on the stick is powered on all the time anyway.

1427  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Raspberry Pi $25 PC - Could we run GPUs/FPGAs on this? on: March 01, 2012, 12:20:39 AM
Where do you guys get 6970 gets 683 GFLOPS.

6970 has 2.7 TFLOPS of floating point computational power and a 7970 is ~3.8 TFLOPS.

WOW. Did not realize the difference between a 5870 and 7970 was that big.

Now that you look at the TFLOPS and MHash/s it really does look like the 7970 is almost 1.7 times faster than a 5870 due to the much better overclocking ability of 28nm GPUs.
1428  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: When is the 7990 supposed to be released? on: March 01, 2012, 12:16:58 AM
Exact specs haven't even been "leaked" (although companies now have timelines for their "leaks") yet.  No way it is March 6th. Gamers need time to commit to $850 and specs, and early previews, websites talking about they have one but are NDA until March XX, etc.  None of that has happened and usually all that occurs weeks (plural) prior to release date.
Roger that. What we may expect is the release date to be announced at CeBIT. I expect that date to be a few months away, though.

Damn it.

I was getting excited about the 6 March date Undecided

They are supposedly releasing the Pitcairn chips so that may be good as well for better $/MH ratio Huh

I am no developer but what about making the protocol more robust / resistant to flaky network connections and high pink 3G WAN links or is that fully independent of the protocol and I am a noob Huh

Thanks !

Just try to use your ARM linux as a workstation with java, eclipse, chrome WITH flash support and spotify, skype, wine etc. If you wan't to do anything else in your life you won't be able to.

Exactly. All these fools thinking they will go for ARM or MIPS or another BS architecture like that will hit a brick wall.

Fact of the matter is that x86 is KING and most supported. No x86, no dice.

Stick to i686 or amd64 if you don't want to be dreaming about cross compiling in your sleep Tongue

I'm not sure you two have any idea what you're talking about.
I've already cross compiled cgminer for my router.

Thanks for your input though, I'll now not use my router as a workstation.

Roll Eyes

Still, don't try and tell me that it is easier / faster to run cgminer on ARM compared to x86 because that simply is not true.

Most people are running it on x86 and that is where the support is at. ARM is just a hack and rarely done except by the complicated few who can't spend a few bucks to get a proper desktop for FPGA only mining.

I heard a rumor that March 6th is the release date. Anybody know if this is true?

Yeah. That is what I heard too.

I still think getting 1.3 ghash/s out of a 7990 will be pretty easy.

After all, getting 440 on a 5870 = easy and getting 800 mhash/s ( not quite double 440 but a 7970 gets 700 easily ) on a 5970 = easy as well so ...
1435  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: February 28, 2012, 10:06:05 PM
Hi! I havent uploaded any pictures here yet. A while ago i stopped mining because of the noise and heat issues. I had to solve this issue. This is how i solved it Cheesy

Yes so i bought a box, and isolated it and added ventilation. The Cold air intake is at the bottom, and goes up on the opposite side from the warm air outtake. I have added a  I have another plate over so the the fans sucks the warm air into the little space then out of the box.

So atm the box is outside and i have one rig doing some mining :-)

I will upload more pictures tonight(at work at the moment).

Plz response transaction !

I've received them, no worries.

Yeah. I got 0.1 BTC but how come Fordy gets 0.25 BTC Huh

Thanks !

He was the Only one with 10 New Posts Tongue

OK. I understand now.

I originally thought that only people having more than 10 posts could use this offer.

Now I get it and I will post at least 10 quality posts a day.

Thanks !

Finally after a lot of waiting and anger I got my damn $5 back !

Thanks a lot to Raize, Goat and legolouman !

I will avoid scams like this in the future by using P2Pool and I suggest you do the same if you were scammed here as well.

Heya there,
got a couple of Steam coupons I'm not gonna use, so might as well make someone happy with them, since they're only valid untill 01-03-2012!

-75% on PuzzleQuest: ChallengeoftheWarlords
-25% on anything from Valve
-50% on BIT.TRIP.BEAT
-66% on Prototype

Couple of "rules";
One coupon per user, first come, first served!

Can I have the Valve one ?

Thanks !
