1441  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Store your seed phrase offline on: January 05, 2023, 09:13:40 AM
In August 2022, hacker breached data of LastPass users, but can only be accessed using the password the users used to encrypt the data, said LastPass.
I've always thought storing your data online is a terrible feature for a password manager! Obviously the hacker still needs the user passwords, but now he got all encrypted files at once. By only storing your passwords locally, the hacker would have to hack millions of computers to get the same data.

People will always go for convenience. And you cannot deny the fact that accessing that online stored passwords across all your devices is a nice feature. It's still better than having the same (weak) password everywhere, you know...
Of course, everything that's stored online is at a certain level of risk. That's why the things (websites, apps) that hold money need at least 2FA too. And the online things should not hold meaningful amount of money.
And, bottom line, clearly, keeping wallet seed anywhere online is an awful idea, the worse possible one.
1442  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Does GPU used on mining is still good? on: January 05, 2023, 09:02:49 AM
I have a friend that selling his GPU that use on mining for a year. He is selling his GPU for only 30% of the original price. I'm planning to use to upgrade the GPU of ny desktop that I used for gaming and watching on Netflix.

I'm just concerned that GPU work under mining stress is very prone to early break. Any feedback from second buyer or miner that convert there mining gpu to typical gaming gpu?

If you would have been reading the sticky topic in this board you would have been seen that you cannot mine bitcoin with GPU.
This being said, your question belongs to altcoins mining.

Let us know what will be the last three digits of bitcoin block #771350

What happens if for example you'll have 20 participants and neither of them guesses those 3 digits?

I guess I did not listen

Careful, I've said sober enough, not 100% sober Wink

Plus, you technically didn't make any prediction yet (i.e. you didn't post a code tag with your name in it and I doubt that posting the code tag with others' name is taken into account), hence you don't necessarily have to remove that post, nor wait Grin
1449  Economy / Services / Re: LoyceV's Avatar for Rent [first 🦊🦊🦊3 YEARS🦊🦊🦊 (197 weeks) rented out] on: January 04, 2023, 11:49:04 AM
Aaaand here is my bet for the raffle:

Code:
Bitcointalk Account: NeuroticFish
Last Block of January 2023: 774455

Are you sure it's yours??  Grin Grin Grin
Can you please recheck?

As usual, copy-paste ruins me I will delete my earlier post after 24h, as I wrote NF's name there instead of mine and I also did not write my predicted block; then I'll make a new post. (Editing prediction is not allowed, but deleting the post is also not forbidden, lol.)

OK, you've checked it  Cheesy
Now you know why I wanted to make sure I'm sober enough for the job and delayed my prediction a little.

1451  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: mycelium wallet on: January 04, 2023, 09:29:39 AM
OP, please be very careful with private messages asking for help and offering help. Not all such people come with good intentions.
At least when something is discussed publicly (here), others can see and correct/warn in case of anything shady.
1452  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 04, 2023, 09:27:31 AM
Part of the issue is irreversible transaction.
It would be safer to build a decentralized platform on top of Bitcoin where Bitcoin transactions can be reversed if unauthorized people gain access to users coins

You don't know what you're talking about. This would mean that anybody could reverse his transactions for no good reason. The merchants would have no reason at all to use Bitcoin, actually, it would be the opposite: they would avoid it.

Well any credit card transactions can be easily reversed by the credit card company or bank, but most merchants still accept credit cards.

That's done by centralized institutions you and the merchant (have no option but to) trust. Ucy was talking about decentralized platform where transactions can be reversed.
1453  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: mycelium wallet on: January 04, 2023, 08:59:29 AM
hi. I am new to this community but i  think this is the best place to get an answer to my question. i am an old lady and i bought  some btc in 2016. i  have them on mycelium wallet. Since then a lot has been changed.
Now my question is is mycelium wallet still good. I updated few times cant even remember when. If mycelium wallet not good what should I do? do i lose my btc? ect. thanks

Hello.

There's a board specific for Mycelium: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=231.0
Maybe you manage to move this there, or at least into Wallet Software (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=37.0)

However, Mycelium is usually not advised because it's closed source. But it's not a bad wallet.
If you have meaningful amount of coins, then the problem is not Mycelium, it's that you keep it in a not-secure-enough manner and you may want to consider buying a hardware wallet (I guess that setting up a cold storage is out of question, so I went for the most user friendly approach) and transfer your coins there, into safety.

I will add that if you set up a new wallet - no matter is hardware wallet or whatever - make sure it's you who generates the new seed, make sure you save/store that seed offline in multiple places, make sure you recover your wallet at least once from the seed (to make sure it's the right wallet), make sure the new seed never touches a computer/smartphone (never goes online).

1455  Other / Meta / Re: Post history (action=profile;sa=showPosts) sometimes renders <pre> tags too wide on: January 04, 2023, 08:50:37 AM
Anyone else notice that if you wrap something that contains really long lines with [code] tags, that it'll look okay in the actual post, but if you browse your post history afterwards, it'll render much wider than the surrounding posts and throw everything out?

Although it doesn't happen to me too often, I know very well what you're talking about!
And I hoped that someday it'll get fixed.

I messed around for a few (very frustrating) hours trying to get to the bottom of this, and managed to come up with the following SMF patch:

Thank you!
I am sure that this will be added. It's, after all, a bugfix (and, no offense, but I find this more useful than the "OP" patch).
1456  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 26 BTC Stolen on: January 04, 2023, 08:45:24 AM
Don’t think the story can be solved before OP write more.

This pretty much sums it up. However, while I do trust MJ, he may want to clear this up beyond doubt and only theymos can do that. Hence I support Pmalek point/request.
But it's really up to MJ, I think that he should ask theymos, if he considers it necessary.
Again, for me it's clear. The lack of proof of identity (i.e. signed message) was the root for disaster (if there was indeed a disaster).
1457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 04, 2023, 08:40:18 AM
This is another skeptical me argument hehehe.

"Don't trust, verify", remember? And then why trust somebody's claims, no matter who it is, if the things just don't add up?!

This might also be a way to prepare for an exit from holding bitcoin without being persecuted by the community? Claim he was hacked, mix the coins, keep the coins then sell on the next bull market when he has 10x of the present value. This is $20 million and very much enough for his retirement.

I love the mix of drama, conspiracy and price speculation Cheesy Grin Grin
One thing that still looks odd is that all this shit show goes on only on Twitter. Nothing on Mastodon and nothing in here.
Another thing that must be cleared up is what was his actual "cold storage" setup.
And claiming that there's a CoinJoin in a tx that's actually clean...
...yeah, the things just don't add up. And I've got some logical explanations for this and that, still, far from enough.

I consider the hacking of 2 Twitter accounts easier than hacking into a cold storage.
The boating accident theory is also a not-too-bad idea.
1458  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: January 03, 2023, 08:46:31 PM
Even the NSA have admitted they can still track phones which are in airplane mode, so your phone must still be sending and receiving some data.

Of course, its telephony can see what antennas are around in order to send SOS calls, which can be done without SIM. NSA can find out what antennas the phone was interogating and triangulate/approximate the position.

And if NSA wants to get in your devices, the old phone you start now and then to sign transactions is your smallest problem Cheesy
But I don't deny it you have a point. Maybe a bit paranoid, but not too much.
1459  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos is living the high life; BitcoinTalk is inaccessible without JavaScript on: January 03, 2023, 06:53:28 PM
I know you come up with this so I prepared this for you:

Do you understand the concept of off-topic? Or I have to report so you can call that your free speech is censored?
Let me clear it up: I don't care of that theory and it's, again, off topic.

Regarding your comments on the quotes, it appears you didn't even read the original topic, which was about CloudFlare making bitcointalk.org inaccessible without JavaScript.

With Cloudflare I do agree. With "cannot quote" I don't. And you've put both in the same topic, although, if Cloudflare doesn't allow you in, quoting is the least of your concerns.
You've put together two topics/issues. I've answered to one. Next time be clearer.
I did quote the part I was answering to. Are you sure you've paid attention?

And in order to avoid Cloudflare kick in too often, avoid reading all the posts of a topic in one go (the "all" button); it could make your life easier.
Don't you find interesting that neither my Tor Browser, nor my non-js Firefox had any issues with Cloudflare? I had to force an "all" posts view for Clouflare to kick in.
1460  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator Account may be compromised? on: January 03, 2023, 06:42:52 PM
But... these are well known... Do you think that Luke-Jr was not aware of such procedures and he made am amateur mistake...?

I really don't know what was Luke-Jr setup, that's why I still have my doubts that this story is for real.

franky1 has a post in another topic which could be relevant information (if it's correct, which I don't know). There may be that some of the old/original bitcoiners may have a different view on what is cold storage and that wallet may have been exposed to his LAN, which probably got compromised.

Of course, while any minimal security measures were okay 10 years ago, anybody with a sense of reality would know that more and more security is needed with every year passing and every more dollar on the price.
