Reparations could come in the form of healthcare/education/housing.  They aren't necessarily cash payments.

It is not logical to provide healthcare or education based on the skin color. Let's assume that the government want to improve the healthcare facility in a predominantly African-American neighborhood. Let's assume that 80% of the population is African American, 10% is white and 10% is Hispanic. The government constructs new healthcare/educational facilities. Are you saying that these facilities should be open only to the 80% African American population? If that is the idea about repatriation, then it is plain wrong. I would instead extend these facilities to the remaining 20% as well. But in the second scenario, it won't be called as repatriation.

166 and lost 5 wifkets but they entered into the 3rd session of the day which is not much horrible as 3rd test, due to the older ball it is possible to make better strokes now so they are keep ticking the score board with good partnership from the middle order, still one batsman to come so they can hopefully cross 200 which may give some confidence for the bowlers to work on.

It's the usual story. Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes got out in quick succession and now they are struggling at 174/7. Dan Lawrence looks to be in good touch, but he is about to run out of partners. The tail has started and now Dom Bess is at the crease. Jack Leach and James Anderson to come next. England can consider themselves lucky in case they manage to get past 200.
2003  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: March 04, 2021, 07:04:54 AM
No need to make that kind of conclusion just after the first session of the first day in this match, after the 3 wickets Bairstow and Stokes is making good partnership and it is nearing 45 at very good run rate which is a good fight back after the two early wickets. Hope this may give them the lost confidence and they also have deep batting order so if one or two partnership from now on will give good fighting total for them and don't forget the pitch is going to be more worse when the match progress.

Jonny Bairstow is gone, trapped leg before by Mohammed Siraj. Now they are down to Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope. One good news for England is that they included one additional batsman in the playing XI. So apart from Ben Foakes, they have Dan Lawrence also yet to come. Perhaps that should help them to make a total of 150 plus. Also, may be Dom Bess and Leach could add some valuable runs this time around.
2004  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HODL ₿itcoin for Life, not for Lifetime. on: March 04, 2021, 06:57:53 AM
Our goal of HODL Bitcoin is to get profit, so we don't need HODL for lifetime. If we have reached the sell target we want, we should immediately
sell the Bitcoin that we have. Even if we are greedy and HODL Bitcoin too long it will make us lose many opportunities to get profit. Moreover,
the price of Bitcoin is very volatile, so don't hold Bitcoin for too long. Sell when we have made a profit and buy it again when there is a correction.
By doing this, the profit we make from Bitcoin is far more maximal, because for me HODL Bitcoin is for life.

I have a slightly different take on this. You should sell your Bitcoins, when it is clear that a peak valuation has been achieved and the future prospects are not very bright. The target is not something that should be constant. Target could be changed to reflect the changing market dynamics. For example, if you had purchased the coins in 2012 or 2013, and at that time you set a target of $50,000. Once that target is achieved, you need to think about the next step. If you feel that the future prospects are good, then you can sell a part of your coins and keep the remainder for the long-term after setting a new target.
2005  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2021-03-03 BBG - Bitcoin Jumps Above $50,000 in Recovery from Last Week’s Rout on: March 04, 2021, 06:41:08 AM
Shall we buy the enthusiasm of John Wu, president of blockchain technology firm Ava Labs, who said that he is hopeful the new Biden administration will help foster innovation in blockchains, cryptocurrencies and digital assets, instead of stifling it? I am not sure about that, sorry. Keeping my eyes wide shut for warning signs.

I don't really care whether the Biden administration takes any step to promote innovation or not. Bitcoin has thrived for more than a decade, despite the government taking a hostile stance. And I am sure that the same will be the case for the next one or two decades as well. Bitcoin don't need any institutional support. It is decentralized and is not dependent on any authority or outside support.
2006  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Joe Biden is President of the United States of America on: March 04, 2021, 06:04:45 AM
If you have a solution to reparations , I'm all ears.

I would not pay individuals but instead try to fix systemic racism and discrimination in housing, education, employment, voting etc, because any potential positive effects of monetary payments would be nullified by that. Neither is happening so it's a pointless discussion. Hopefully I'll live to see the day when the concept of discrimination is no longer a political issue but I'm not gonna hold my breath because that's bad for my respiration.

In modern human society there is no place for discrimination based on race or ethnicity, so I would agree. If such discrimination exists, then the government should take steps to eradicate it. But there is no need to link this with repatriation. What the racial minorities in the United States need right now is affordable healthcare/education/housing and not monetary handouts based on race.

England has already lost two wickets for just 19 runs. Axar patel back in action infront of the home ground. Root is on the pitch let's see how he performs in this match. Another wicket and I assume England will be struggling to reach 100 this time.

It is getting boring. I never watch one sided test matches and therefore stopped watching it when the second wicket fall. I see no improvement in the England batting. And it would be a surprise if they manage to cross a total of 150. I just hope that this time the match doesn't end in two days, as happened with the third test match. As long as Joe Root is there, some hope exists for England. Let's see how it goes for them.
2008  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-02-23] Yellen sounds warning about ‘extremely inefficient’ bitcoin on: March 03, 2021, 06:08:57 PM
Bitcoin created a completely new business industry out of the blue and the companies that belong to this ecosystem earn money and pay taxes to their respective jurisdictions. How on Earth what they make all this unlawful as this is a perfectly working virtuos cycle?
Of course Bitcoin is decentralized by its own nature but they cannot do anything about it. Better to play the game fair, am I right?  Smiley

They know that cryptocurrency activity can't be made illegal or unlawful. That's why they are trying to scare away the investors. After the repeated statements by Yellen, today we had Elizabeth Warren going ballistic about Bitcoin. But the timing is wrong. They should have made these statements during a crash in the exchange rates. If they had done that, then at least some people would have taken them seriously. Now when the Bitcoin prices are up, they are coming up with such ridiculous statements.

Very poor performance from the part of Afghanistan. I don't know what happened to them, but 2-3 years ago they were giving stiff competition even to the big 3 sides. I understand that the absence of Rashid Khan (due to injury) impacted them negatively. But there is no excuse for the failure from the part of their batsmen. After all these years, Afghanistan still doesn't have a stable top order. They are experimenting with new players every now and then.
Afghanistan is not a good team. They play well occasionally. But I didn’t think they would play so badly against a small team like Zimbabwe. Afghanistan has many talented players. Yet their batting has been a disaster. The Afghanistan team is well aware of Rashid Khan's absence. Afghanistan would have played better if he had.

I don't think that they are not a good team. Previously against some of the stronger teams they had played well. Don't know what happened this time, but I suspect that going for too many players and lack of exposure to the longer format of the game proved to be their undoing. They need to play more test matches, so that they will get enough experience in this format. There are a lot of T20 specialists in the Afghanistan team. But they don't have any test specialists.

2011  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin dominance hits 62%, alts lagging behind on: March 03, 2021, 02:01:46 PM
That's exactly what's happening, the rise of the altcoins resulted to the decrease of dominance rate of bitcoin but these altcoins that has significant increase are just maybe 10% of the total number of altcoins in the market, most of them can be seen in the top 100 of the https://coinmarketcap.com/.

There are more than 10,000 different altcoins and tokens (including the dead and the dormant coins). However, out of this many coins, a handful of them are accounting for a large majority of the altcoin market cap. The total market cap of altcoins stand at around $500 billion. Out of that, Ethereum alone accounts for $185 billion. Cardano, BNB and Polkadot together accounts for $100 billion plus. So just four alts are accounting for more than half of the altcoin market cap.
2012  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Shall I HODL DOGE? on: March 03, 2021, 01:50:16 PM
Just spend 10 minutes reading how Dogecoin was conceived, what's it for, where it's used and you would never be eager to hold dofe for the long term. Dogecoin has no fixed supply and it's a miracle that it's still running considering that the project has no maintainers anymore.
Don't but Doge thinking it will give you some return in the future, Elon's pump was probably the last one.

In the cryptocurrency market, the logic behind the rise of several cryptocurrencies is hard to explain. DOGE was originally created to mock Bitcoin. But after some time, it achieved cult status among a section of cryptocurrency users. Even the creator of DOGE disowned that coin. But that had little impact on it's exchange rate or trade volumes. Obviously powerful people are pumping DOGE. The pump will come to an end at a certain point and at that time DOGE will end up similar to XRP.
2013  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: what is your worst loss in 2021 bull run on: March 03, 2021, 12:56:39 PM
I don't have many transactions in 2021, but made some mistakes in 2019 and 2020. I purchased a lot of BCH with my Bitcoin during that period. And unfortunately, the current BCH exchange rate (against BTC) is around 50% lower when compared to the rate with which I made my purchase. That was a big miscalculation from my part. Other mistake was the decision to sell 20% of my BTC in 2020. The average sale price was $8,000 to $10,000 per coin. If I had held on to the coins, then I would have received 5x to 6x more profit.

^^^ How about reparations to Irish Americans? When America Despised the Irish: The 19th Century’s Refugee Crisis - https://www.history.com/news/when-america-despised-the-irish-the-19th-centurys-refugee-crisis.

Cool

Members of all racial groups underwent enslavement at one time or the other. However Democrats want to paint that slavery was only committed against the Africans and whites were the only perpetrators. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

The worst atrocities were carried out by the Arabs, who had established a lucrative slave trading business in Eastern Africa for almost a millennium. However, unlike the Atlantic slave trade, very few descendants of East African slave trade exist. Because the male slaves were immediately castrated and made eunuchs, while any children born to the female slaves were killed as soon as they were born. Fore more than 5 centuries, the Tatars and Turks enslaved millions of East Slavs (Russians, Ukrainians, Poles.etc). Barbary pirates raided Southern Europe, taking huge number of Italian, Spanish and Greek slaves.

Repatriations would still be OK, if they are being paid to individuals who were enslaved once. But that is not the case. The demand is that descendants of a particular ethnic group must be uniformly paid handouts, irrespective of whether they are descended from slaves or not.

Here it gets murky. Take the case of the Amazonia region. During the late 19th century, hundreds of thousands of defenseless natives were enslaved by the rubber companies. The owners of these rubber companies were whites. But the slave raiders were blacks (mostly descended from freed slaves) who were imported from the island of Barbados. These black employees committed spine chilling atrocities against the defenseless natives. They would rape children as young as 3 or 4 years and they would cut the limbs off the children if their parents could not gather enough rubber. One of their favorite past time was to lift infants by their legs and smash their head against rocks. If the democrats have their way, then these barbarians and their descendants will be proclaimed as worthy of repatriations and the remnants of the native slaves will be declared as "oppressors".

There were reparations paid to Native Americans - in the continental as well as separately for Hawaii and Alaska.  Also to the Japanese that were locked up in camps during WW2.

A grand total of $1.3 billion. That is for 2.43 billion acres of land, and tens of millions of deaths.

https://nypost.com/2021/03/01/biden-adviser-says-white-house-to-start-acting-on-reparations/

Hmm, respirations. What strikes me as odd is that Obama had the house and the senate, but there was never any bills related to reparation passed. Wonder what changed since then. Seems like a terrible move, for multiple reasons.

How do you define "African American" to encapsulate all those that were negatively impacted to the US's history of slavery/racism. Elon Musk, mind you, is considered an African American (he was born in South Africa). Do you start conducting DNA tests?

How do you determine the stipend? No one alive today has been a slave. In fact, slavery has been outlawed for over a hundred years. So how do you calculate the amount that is owed based on what happened in the past?

I look forward to Joe Biden not being able to figure any of this out. Congrats to US tax payers on footing the bill, though.

If they want to start paying reparations, then they should first pay them to the descendants of American Indians who underwent genocide when the Europeans first colonized North America. I am talking about incidents which occurred during the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Isolated incidents of genocide against the natives continued into the early decades of 20th century (check the case of Ishi, the last of the Yahi tribe).

And the first people to be enslaved in the United States were the native Americans in the 16th century, especially the Calusa, Timuqua and other Floridan tribes by the conquistadors. History of African American slavery in the United States started at a much later date. The first slaves from Africa were imported to the United States only in 1619.

Now what is the logic in saying that repatriations should be paid to only one ethnic group, while the group which was the most effected (native Americans) should be disqualified from receiving any of this amount? African Americans increased in number, and they account for 45 million individuals currently. On the other hand, the natives were almost wiped out. Pure-blooded natives number less than a million, and 99% of the languages which were spoken by them before 1600 are now extinct.
2016  Economy / Economics / Re: holding bitcoin from early 2010 till today on: March 03, 2021, 07:30:14 AM
is there someone holding  bitcoin from early 2010   when the price is around 0.01 and still not selling today?    just wondering?

I first registered to this forum in 2012 and got my first coins during that time. I still have some coins remaining from that stash. That said, I very rarely come across any of the users from 2010, although 2011/12 is more common. Even those users who have registered back then have sold most of their coins at lower levels and only a minority would have kept their coins as such. And just one correction. Back in Q1/Q2 2010, the exchange rate was $0.001, and not $0.01.
2017  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin can't be used for transactions? on: March 03, 2021, 07:05:44 AM
Well, it's not exactly like that. You can easily exchange BTC on fiat at almost any exchange market and you can easily purchase using BTC on Amazon for instance. But the problem is mostly in traders’ attitude towards huge volatility of BTC. Sometimes in several minutes BTC price changes on several thousands and then 45$ costs a bit different amount of BTC. If you possess a lot of coins and don't bother about this then you can easily purchase but in other case you didn't want to lose your coins and choose to pay with fiat money that is more stable.

Everything is priced in fiat currency and when the exchange rates change, the amount of coins that you pay may also change. And in most cases, the traders immediately convert their coins to fiat. So the volatility is an issue for the buyers. The sellers/merchants are not much impacted. Also, lot of the merchants use third party processors such as Bitpay and Coinbase to immediately convert their BTC revenues to fiat currency.

The trends for long term is positive till now. But who knows it will keep this positive trends for long term or will there be negative trends for long term investment. And at the time of investment price of it may make loss in this few days.

It is debatable. Bitcoin first came in to existence in 2009. Ever since then, long term investment was never a loss making exercise. If you were holding Bitcoin for more than three years, then at no point between 2009 and 2021 you will be in a loss. Now I can't make any guarantee about the future, but I am hopeful that what has happened during the last 12 years will repeat for another decade or so.

Winners of the last match will go directly to the World Test Championship final, so it is extremely important. For Indians, the good work done in the second and third test matches will be undone if they lose the fourth match as a result of their complacency. If England wins the toss and manages to put a total of 300-350, then things will get interesting. Their bowlers did OK so far. The issue was with their batting.
IIRC, if this test series ends in a draw then AUS will qualify for the World Test championship Finale, not the ENG so there is no more chance for ENG but they can destroy the WTC dream of Indians if they can manage to win the match which is going to start from tomorrow. Even a draw will put India in the Final.

Yup.. I was wrong in my post. England is out of the WTC finals after their pathetic performance in the second test. They had to win the series, and now it is not possible. So it is now between Australia and India. The Kiwis are surely going to prefer Australia over India as their opponents. Australia is in pathetic form right now and both their batsmen and the bowlers are not doing well.

Indians are playing mind games with the English batters, every time they are coming out for press conference, they keep reminding everyone that 4th test match pitch is going to be spin friendly similar to 2nd test match. Reminds me of English press conference when India tours to England.

Let's see if this fire back to Indians or not. Would be ironic if England fight back and win the game. Indians did the same in the Lords, if Indians can do it then surely England can also show some tricks. Grin
