Once you have made this statement I feel compelled to nod, smile, or verbally respond. Quelle horreur! Doesn't the same apply to the pro forma "Have a nice day"?

Geez.  How is this any different than saying "Have a nice day"?  Or does that piss you grumps off too?
Yes the bank has the right to fire her, and the public has a right to not use the bank as a result if they disagree with the policy.  Isn'tt that a great thing?
Zolace you think the response would be the same if everyone at the bank says "as-salaam alaikum"? Or would the response here be that the teller should be fired?
I would respond with a "you too" myself, Sana.  "Peace be with you" doesn't offend me.  Why would it?
Wouldn't offend me at all. And you say it wouldn't offend you. But can you honestly say that people here, some conservatives here, would not have a problem with it?

Usually when people say that people should be allowed to express religious sentiments, they mean their religious sentiment and not others.

I can assure you that if this thread was about someone saying "as-salaam alaikum" at a bank, the conservatives here would be asking for that teller to be fired.
I assure you they would not. (As long as those words didn't accompany a bomb blast or a shooting. LOL.) People say things just to be nice sometimes. Just dammit be nice back. It will not kill you.

"Have a nice day" is just as rote and just as insincere.  Notice it has gone out of style?  There's a reason for that...it irritates people.
2183  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Have a "fired" day? on: July 10, 2014, 12:21:54 PM
The thing is, "Have a blessed day" could be neo-pagan as easily as Christian. I have no objection at all to such a greeting - or to the Muslim one, for that matter. My philosophy is that if someone says "I'm gonna pray for you", even if they mean it in a mean spirited and judgmental way, the proper response is always "Thank you". Here's the thing with this story, though - she doesn't own or run the bank. She's an employee there. And if they have rules prohibiting employees from expressing religions greetings to customers, then she should respect that. If she was warned several times, and continued to do it, I have no problem with the bank manager firing her.
I completely agree with . Why would I take offense when someone wishes me a good day no matter how it is framed. The problem seems to be she didn't stop with just that in spite of all the warnings from her boss. She got fired and I believe the courts will say it was justified. Its never a good idea to refuse to do what a cop or your boss tells you to do.
Nope, still irritates me. I don't know if you  experience what non-believers/agnostics, people other than Christian experience what some of us do down here, but I can tell you that in Texas I'm surrounded by bible-beating evangelicals, from the state house to the legislature, to the grocery store.  And this "Have a blessed day" is their latest thing, a new catchphrase more or less.  It's everywhere.

It's like the new Walgreens campaign.  A few months ago I was mildly pleased when the clerk closed the sale with "Thank you, and be well."   I thought what a nice thing to say.   And then they all started saying it.  Buy a pack of gum, you get a ty and be well.  Pick up your pills...pharmacy tech says ty, and be well.    Now, do you really think any of these people give a rip if I stay well...really?   No, the guys in the board room thought "Hey, let's try this.  Call your managers and put it in the training manual."

I saw this. If sleeping on the train on the way home from work is cause for arrest, the jails will be full of tired workers. The NYPD is one of the most corrupt organizations in the US. The case of Adrian Schoolcraft has proven that beyond any doubt whatsoever.
While its hard to argue that the NYPD isn't full of bad, sometimes vicious, corrupt asshoIes, these were MTA transit cops. They're not NYPD. There's been change at the top of the NYPD too, since we got the new mayor.

Interesting article: http://m.kiplinger.com/article/inves...investing.html
Very few options available and those are the major choices that tend to be anti tobacco, alcohol, weapons, and gambling. Vs anti abortion which includes basically every pharmaceutical/medical company.Plus remember you'd have to find a 401k fund operator that even offers a fund that would fit the requirement.
Very interesting link, thanks for posting it.

The first example in the link though is one that takes into account religious considerations (Islamic), and the Forbes article did list specific religiously conscious plans to choose from. I understand that they may not always be available, but I find it rather likely (just going off assumptions) that they would be more readily available in this case than the examples provided in your article (simply owing to the relative demand of a Christian conscious choice in the US over say an Islamic choice).

And once again, I think this entire argument rather misses the drama with which Hobby Lobby approached this. They threatened closure of their business over being forced to being linked to immoral practices (however tenuous). If it is really THAT much of a concern for them they could either locate only where they could take advantage of religiously conscious 401k plans or they could do what they originally said they would have to in the face of such a moral outrage: close shop. Either way their 401k is still ironic given their PR campaign during this legal process.
Just give up- you are wrong and even you know it. Now we are laughing at the lengths you will go to try and show you are not .It isn't their money. It's their employees money.
There's a pretty big difference between directly paying for something and not restricting your employees' 401(k) options. So basically profiting from abortions is better morals than having to copay abortions.

The worst thing I ever felt about Obama was when I heard about that sentence in his memoirs, "I chose my friends very carefully..." Even at a young age, due to his background, he was lived a life of self-repression, where he had to behave in certain ways to keep in good with the eyes of others...carefully choosing his friends to make sure that his persona didn't suffer in the eyes of those who mattered.

Why?  Why would that bit of self-revelation make you react with 'the worst I ever felt' about him?

Does not surprise me in the least that this man considering his childhood and his circumstances, starting out from his first breath as an 'other' no matter which culture he found himself in, (black child in a white world, then black child in Indonesia, then black in a white world again)...would defend himself by finding a way to fit.  Indeed, a way that could elevate him, eventually, within the dominant group, not only to equal footing - but possibly above and beyond it.  Overachieving and ingratiating himself was what he chose - with a few spates of rebellion.  I think the 'passion' you believe is missing is there; it simmers underneath.

According to his memoirs, Obama's mother was also acutely aware of what Barack needed to do to compete...and drilled him relentlessly...those 5 am lessons before school.  It was her way of preparing him and protecting him.

So yes he frustrates me too.  I want to see more fire.  But, fire isn't what we're going to get, not consistently anyway.   I understand it and have adjusted to it.  Bottom line, I think he's a good guy and a good president.
Personally, I believe a woman who abandoned him and sent him off to his grandparents, barely ever to see him again, is unlikely to have 'drilled' 5:00 a.m. lessons, especially about our Constitution, into him.

I believe most of what he wrote about himself were 100% lies.

So what we have here is yet another in a never-ending series of "this is not Obama's fault".  Then whose fault is it, pray tell?  Is this guy, or is he not, the (unfortunately) head of this country?

I keep asking, if nothing is his fault, is his underlings do not seek guidance from him and continually fuck up, why doesn't this genius get rid of them and find competent people?  If this always falls on some rogue, low-level employee, why is the head (unfortunately) of this country not doing one of the jobs he is being paid to do and cleaning house?

If he has no responsibilities, why are we employing him?
2189  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Immigration: Myths and Misconceptions on: July 09, 2014, 03:24:47 PM
A good article with useful, accurate facts. It is unfortunate that some of our friends prefer "alternative" facts that, at the end of the day, stereotype immigrants...or, as zolace demands, Aliens.

Why does zolace demand one term over another? Because one demeans the Other more and that is his preference.

The first step towards solving the complex issues of Immigration is to just honestly deal with the facts and cast aside the stereotypes...a process we apparently cannot yet accomplish.

BTY, without Immigrants our birth rates and population growth would be negative, like those in many European countries, an outcome that is not good for America.

Interesting how much language and how it is used is coming into play lately.  I'd have to give it some thought as to how this will be ruled on, and it would be a guess anyway.   I will say this; whenever some clerk says "Have a blessed day" to me, it irritates me.  While understanding the benign intent, I don't need a stranger's "blessing" on my day.

Maybe we should ask our Christians if they would appreciate "Go with Allah" from the convenience store clerk.
Now who would have figured that you'd be irritated because someone said "have a blessed day"? I guess its safe to say you've never counted your blessings because that would mean thanking God.

I'm going to guess that her statement won't be viewed as religious and that demanding she not say it is a violation of her free speech. I would much rather have someone like her waiting on me than someone with a sour puss because she's never counted her blessings.
I think it would be safe to say you've never had a rational thought in your entire life.Yes and lets not say "God Bless You" when some sneezes either.
Wouldn't want to offend anybody.  Grin

BTW,

For those of you who strongly advocate states rights and smaller government, do you think the CRA of 1964 could ever have happened if your vision for America had been in place?

Great question - do you think our southern friends will take it on?

"Why are they buying? Only 39% of Chinese buyers said they intended to use their purchases as their main home.
Some may buy condos for their children attending U.S. colleges. They hope that, in addition to saving on dormitory fees, they can make benefit from home price appreciation by the time the students graduate.
Others are becoming landlords, buying cheap homes in distressed economic pockets, like Detroit, and renting them out."

90% of foreigners who buy American real estate do not even aware about real estate taxes and fees associated with home ownership in United States.

I have never said I do not want illegals deported .  I have said it is a complicated issue with variables.  Made more complicated with our byzantine immigration laws (domestic and international) and policies that Rs don't want to fix or even address,  but do want to continue to bitch about (Obama's fault!).   Now I realize that variables is something you don't do, or can't (you're a champ with the snide non sequiturs though) ....that is not my problem.
Well, being as how it is so complicated and all...and being as how you think the folks who don't want them in California are assholes...and being as how you want to blame it all on the Rs....why don't you explain to me why one of the variables that you do can't be you taking in some of the kids?
Better idea; why don't you take a hike. I have a feeling the pres is going to start moving money around for the border problem, with or without the consent of the do nothing Congress.  The pen and the phone.   And then the howling is going to get deafening.  He's out there saying ok, you asked for it; sue me!
