2001  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin or gold? on: December 08, 2015, 05:32:19 PM
I'd choose gold for its stability and bitcoin for its potential. I think both are great assets, with different pros and cons.

its just that
im a bit skeptical if bitcoin will survive that long when space travel is
allowed for civilians.
Why not? Why would two planets have to use the same currency (or store of value, for that matter)? Nowadays two neighbouring countries don't even do so. Convertibility is what you're looking for. If the internet can't connect people from one planet to another, charts will do the job. But it's true that gold will have an advantage on bitcoin when it comes to that.

Anyway, that's a very remote future that we're talking about. Maybe space travelling for civilians is something that we'll see before leaving this life (and I'm talking about close destinations like the moon and stuff, if even it becomes possible during the course of the next 50 years, which I seriously doubt, by the way). But currencies used somewhere else then on Earth? Nah, I don't buy it. At least not before several centuries. We won't be here anymore anyway.

We have some time before the big rise. I have met some people who knew about bitcoin in one way or another. That said, it is pretty rare to meet people who know about bitcoin.
Here in Taiwan I meet people who know about bitcoin and even use it all the time. Since one of my friends introduced me to it 2 months ago I've started to talk about it around me and noticed that quite a few of my acquaintances were in fact already using it, or at least knew about it. Most of the people I know who know about bitcoin are American though. I know very few Taiwanese people who are interested in it, as of now.

2004  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin is a computer game on: December 08, 2015, 01:27:37 PM
Computer games are based on reality. I mean programming is based on reality, so of course...
Now Bitcoin is based on programming as well. And it's based on reality more then anything else. That's why it may look similar to computer games. But bitcoin is not based on computer games and it's even less a computer game.

Comparing bitcoin and video games is just bizarre.

2009  Other / Off-topic / Re: How would you guys react if you guys lost 10, 000 bitcoin? on: November 28, 2015, 06:51:05 AM
Nah. If you lost 10,000 bitcoins it means that you once had that sum of money, which can only be achieved in a limited number of ways, which are:
1) You were born in a rich family,
2) You're a smart and dynamic person with ideas that can change the future (early BTC adopters are to be found here, for most and if not, well then they'll be closer to 1) ),
3) You stole them through hacking,
4) You're just a greedy person who's been living a miserable life in order to save.

If it's 1) than becoming alcoholic and asking for money from people on the street seems a good way to deal with such a loss. Or you just learn to live with it.
If it's 2 or 3 you'll get rich again, don't worry (through honest means or not).
And if it's 4 you'll probably be dead soon anyway but congratulations for putting together 10,000 bitcoins, it must not have been easy with today's rate. Guess that's what happens with Alzheimer, right? You've been saving fiat all the way, then you learn about BTC and you transfer, then you leave your password on the table at the restaurant before leaving. Sad.
2010  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mentioning Bitcoin the Wright way to Family and Friends can raise your status on: November 27, 2015, 05:21:11 PM
@LiteCoinGuy: Take up arms and CONQUER ALL!
... Or simply tell them about advantages that you know will get them interested, and insist on said advantages? I can assure you that my mom was digging the almost-no-fees stuff about it. They're your friends and family. You kind of have to know a thing or two about what should catch their attention. And it's not like bitcoin is not offering any major advantage. You just have to make your pick.
2011  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mentioning Bitcoin the Wright way to Family and Friends can raise your status on: November 27, 2015, 05:08:11 PM
It would be a great thing if people didn't need to install Linux on their computer to ensure some security. As the situation is now you won't get my mom involved in bitcoin. Bitcoin has to come to the people. Not the opposite. That's the big thing right now, I think. The tallest wall between now and main acceptance is that as of now if you're not a computer geek bitcoin is simply too dangerous for you.
Now I too have talked to my mom about it and she seems interested in several things regarding it, such as low fees for money transfers outside of the EU, though she doesn't understand the least bit about how it works.

@megatron: Well it's like any conversation that you might have with anyone, trying to introduce them to something new that they didn't know: if you can hold your own and get them to be interested you'll gain status points in their eyes.
2012  Other / Off-topic / Re: How would you guys react if you guys lost 10, 000 bitcoin? on: November 27, 2015, 02:36:15 PM
You see, in this world there is two kinds of people, my friend. Those who could keep their 7500 BTC, and those who dig. I'd dig.
2013  Other / Off-topic / Re: How would you guys react if you guys lost 10, 000 bitcoin? on: November 27, 2015, 01:33:12 PM
So this is the thread about solar flares, right?
2014  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: First ever block? on: November 27, 2015, 05:27:40 AM
Guess Satoshi mined the first block.
I'd like to know the answers to the other questions too though.

I've just noticed something: https://coinmap.org/#/map/39.01878358/125.72822571/12
There are three spots where bitcoins is used in PYONGYANG! Am I the only one who finds it bizarre?
2016  Other / Off-topic / Re: Are you buying bitcoins? Why? on: November 26, 2015, 05:06:34 PM
The consensus seems to be that bitcoin is cheap now but it has been cheaper just last month. I'd buy a bit now, if I were you, and save some fiat in order to buy back my own blood on the street in the unlikely event bitcoin falls back to $200. If it doesn't you can still inject more fiat in it in the future.

You got it with the coupons, keepdoing! That's the problem with this system and, I think, the reason why few people are willing to use bitcoins at Family Mart.

Family Mart isn't on the map, that's right. Otherwise Taiwan would be one big red spot on the map. That said I have two acquaintances (that I met before getting into bitcoin, under other circumstances) who accept direct payments in bitcoins, though. One of them is owns a bar and the other a hostel. Both are foreigners (= not Taiwanese). And actually these two businesses make out for something like one third of all the businesses accepting bitcoins here.

I also noticed something funny about the EU, according to this map: Belgium and the Netherlands are two rather dynamic spots (together with Northern Italy and England), and in Belgium only the Dutch-speaking part is. The French-speaking part is a black spot on the map where no-one seems interested in the technology. Just the same as in France: very few people seem interested in bitcoin there. Apart from Eastern Europe, no one seems less interested in bitcoin than French-speakers (not talking about Switzerland here, as their situation is very different). Talk about cultural impact on bitcoin acceptance Cheesy

I agree that with high-transaction merchant stores (Walmart, Grocery, Gas Stations, Fast Food etc...) it is still very early to expect them to "Accept Bitcoin".
In Taiwan, Family Mart is accepting it. And that means something like 1000 convenience stores, throughout an island the size of Maryland, where everyone goes at least once every day to buy all kind of stuff.
Thing is I'm actually not sure so many people pay there with bitcoins now. But if it works I'm expecting 7 eleven to follow suit anytime. And maybe in time set an example for the world.
