Just don't think about an altcoin will beat bitcoin. If it's possible, it will take forever for them to beat it. But if there's the sense of investing into alts, you should choose what you think is the best that you can see.
Some altcoins are just good to be avoided because they don't have concrete plans of developing it for the long term. And later, you're going to see those projects that are worth it because they're continuous in development.

News as an indicator really helps. You'll get to see what's up and down with the news and for the specific coin that's part of the news. It's very needed and helpful factor when you're doing TA. Although there are still projects that try to get into the ICO. Check and search those ICO listing websites, they still got some projects left on the list.
But, it is unknown if those projects are good to trust with your money. It's better to go away from them and set yourself with another standard if it's about investing into those projects.
