there's no trouble with the wallet, it just takes a while to sync 3 years of a blockchain. i would suggest using the core wallet for the platform you have,

and keeping your coins there. you can download the chain to make it sync faster, from vergecurrency.de or cryptochainer.com

Desktop (with a backup elsewhere of the wallet.dat ofc)  or paper (i dont know paper, nor its benefits/pitfalls) but it would still be 110% better than any webbased setup.

saving wallet.dat in a cloud-service I would not do, if that service gets hacked or you can't access it your wallet.dat is gone. Best safe wallet.dat on an usb stick, burn on cd and keep it in a safe place, best to have 2 or more backups.

You can add funds/coins to the address any time,no need to make an extra backup, all is stored in the blockchain. You can always check your balance and transaction in an online blockchain explorer, simply enter your (wallet)address there.

i would definitely agree with this. multiple backups are never a bad thing..

im on the fence about encryption.

if you encrypt your wallet... its harder to use the backup ofc. (which is good/bad on its own)

there was something bad about encryption , but my memory is flaky and its been 2yrs since i heard about it...so it might be an ok choice.

(and that was on the btc wallet i was using) so might not matter at all for verge.

well the only drawback to encrypting it, is if you forget your password, you cant get your coins lol
