HashFast Production Update

We want to update our customers on the progress of our machine production.

Producing a rig as powerful as the Baby Jet or Sierra requires coordination with a host of fabricators and designers — like the machines themselves, it's a lot of moving parts, and fluid timelines.

This is the situation:

Silicon Wafer Fabbed Out Successfully
The silicon wafers have completed fabrication. The silicon is the core of the chip, and the complicated etching process that creates the circuitry on the silicon is finished. Now the process is starting of taking this silicon, with its complete circuits, and packaging it into finished chips. The wafers are en route to San Jose, where they will be cut into individual die. We’ll get photos for you soon.

Substrate Update
When we designed our substrates, we knew they'd be one of the most unpredictable segments of the chip's production. Substrate production has a lot of risk — at high power, a substrate can overheat, causing a rig to underperform. While rerunning simulations in Cadence, we saw some concerning currents in some of the vias in the substrate. In order to address that, we've been working closely - every day - with both our substrate designers and our manufacturing house. We’ve made key improvements to the design that can be incorporated even into those substrates that are already in manufacturing. Even so, the latest delivery estimates for the modified, improved substrate design are three weeks from today. This means that we would be shipping our first rigs mid-December.

Obviously this is an incredible concern to us, and to you. So for the last several weeks, we've been engaged with an additional team to work on an additional substrate, simultaneous with our existing fabricator. Essentially, we now have two teams racing to produce the best and fastest substrate. As soon as that is done, we'll marry the substrates to the finished wafer and begin assembly of the rigs.

Miner Protection Program
For those of you covered under the Miner Protection Program™ (https://hashfast.com/miner-protection-program/), this delay will not affect the starting point from which benefits are calculated. For First Batch Baby Jets, the start date of the program will be retroactive to October 30th. We want to make sure a delayed ship date does not reduce the value of the program.

A lot of smart, hardworking people are working incredibly long hours to improve our production schedule. If we are able to ship rigs sooner than expected, we'll do so. And, of course, we'll let you know as we receive further information from our production line.

- The HashFast Team

How were you on track to ship late October as late as mid October, when your wafers are just out of fab now and on their way to dicing?

Bad news for Hashfast customers.

Good news for Bitfury and KnC batch 1 customers.

Either way this business model is unsustainable.

Topics of the day:
-1) Substrates. F. substrates. It looks like that TSMC is doing the easy job, but these substrates instead are impossible. Expert opinion welcome. TSMC should make substrates, too, right?
-2) There is no guaranteed shipping date for the MPP. However, delaying that would really be criminal.

My anger against what is wrong in the Bitcoin community is productive:
Bitcointa.lk - Replace "Bitcointalk.org" with "Bitcointa.lk" in this url to see how this page looks like on a proper forum (Announcement Thread)
Hashfast.org - Wiki for screwed customers

well I am glad to hear that the MPP is changed to start at october 30th but even tho I think it will end up not being near enough.

Looks like my prediction that BFL ships before hashfast will come true

I'll say what Hash Fast is unwilling to say: if you didn't purchase a miner protection plan, you are fucked. Kiss your BTC goodbye. I'm so happy I ordered before they came out with the MPP.......

Getting fucked by another ASIC manufacturer, what a surprise.  Roll Eyes

Okay, so somebody do the math and post a nice graphic.

For one first batch Baby Jet, MPP retroactive to October 30th, hashing on 20 December, what do the curves look like, with hi/lo assumptions for future difficulty increases, assuming MPP modules ship exactly Jan 30th.

Thank you in advance,

Moocher.   Wink

PS: Wonder what this means for upgrades and 2nd batch shipping dates.

TSMC does do substrates and packaging however their pricing and timelines may not be viable for small runs.  I am not saying it is or isn't unless you get a bid from TSMC yourself (under NDA) you probably will never know. Remember TSMC makes chips for companies like AMD who may want 10 million units and aren't as time sensitive with rollouts planned months in advance (i.e. AMD isn't going to want a couple wafers done in a week they are going to want 5 million units packaged over the course of a month so they can all hit retail shelves the same time).

IIRC KNC used TSMC as well and they had the completed wafers sent to another company for packaging (talk about hand carrying wafers in wafer carrier from foundry to packaging house by employee on airplane).

I agree a shipping date for MPP is the least they can do.

Well the delay is mostly on Batch 1.  Batch 1 was all MPP.  Later batches had an option of MPP or not but they are unlikely to face as long of a delay.

Can someone please confirm: if we get 4x the hashing power AND we also ordered the Baby Jet Upgrade, the Upgrade is for the original Baby Jet, right? And is the 4x hashing power some separate chips, which would then require an additional (~1k) investment for the kit to assemble it all?

Wow, mid december IF all goes right.. Not good news at all. Oh well, at least we can stop asking for an update.

Let the bitching commence. And yes we're fucked.

I hope that's a joke. Unless you're talking about credit card payments or something? I would think most of the money would be spent if Hash Fast fails. I know they say they can refund, but I would be very surprised if that was true.

The MPP comes as complete boards (not raw chips).  You would need to add power supply, case (optionally), water cooling loop, and fans.  Not sure if HF will offer those parts but even if not buying retail you would be looking at something like:

300W PSU per board (likely combined to larger PSU to handle multiple modules) = $70 per board/module.
Corsair H80 watercooling loop (or some custom system) = $60 per board/module.
At least two radiator fans = $15 per board/module.

So something like $130 to $150 per board in off the shelf parts to convert one or more boards into a complete rig.  That is just a rough idea.  It may vary a lot depending on what the final power looks like, what components are used, etc.  Still everything except the ASIC boards (provided as part of MPP) can be bought off the shelf at newegg or amazon.

The upgrade modules IIRC will include an upgraded power supply and second radiator so your additional cost their should be nothing.

Yeah there was no option, all Batch 1 orders had MPP (remember it was a higher price so you can consider it included in the price).  If you can find your invoice you can lookup the order number here:

Im thinking about 80% probable they will not ship this year now after reading that update.

So batch 1 starts mid-December now. How does this affect batch 2 and 3? When I ordered batch 2, the website said for shipping mid-late November and my batch 3 order said mid-December. What is your policy on refunds because this delay pretty much killed my chances of ROI.
