So if we go for the 12v, the connectors on the boards will remain 4 pin molex, but the connectors on the miniplanes and doubles scrolls will change to 6 pin molex. On the miniplane, probably only one will be required, but we may put 2 on just to make sure you'll get enough power. The double scroll will have 2 for sure. This means for all you ex GPU mine heads, your giant PSU will potentially be able to run four double scrolls.
12v sounds good, from what I've heard. I assume that a computer PSU of reasonably modern origins is what most people have been planning for their Drilling Rig©. And just for the sake of it, here is a picture of my old GPU rig. R.I.P

For the coders: Thanks Barntech So,no 5 volt needed at all,if you go with 12 volt,so I can make 4 pin molex's with or without 5 volt leads.More confusion,I know This you say, with bonus lack of question mark:

It is actually easy enough to buy some extension cables and set them up for 12v or 5v. I am betting that most computer geeks have at least 2 or 3 ATX PSU just lying around making. I would like to get the boards in my grubby little hands and then when the Drillbit team asks us what we would like or not in their future boards we could get that sorted out before they go to assembly.

Barntech (and others),
First great news, close to the decision on the PS. Maybe we can order later today and set up the Mining Shrine.
Question - Are the 6 pin Molex common connectors on modern Power Supplies? (Do they go by a different name?) As I can't seem to find many.
Looking at PS's I am not seeing the name "6 pin Molex". (And I'm hardly seeing 6 pin connectors, but on a few)
For example: -Only 2 of the 7 low watt (300w - 500w) "Be Quiet" models have PCIE 6 pin connectors and just 1 at that (I think that is Molex as it is the only 6 pin listed.) -I see no 6 pin on the cooler master series (see 6+2) -EVGA 500 - I see only the 6+2 listed -400 Watt Super Flower Golden Green - 1 x 6 pin PCI Express power (I think this is it). -Corsair RM 450 - No 6 pin listed -Corsair CX 430 - No 6 pin listed (both of these Corsairs list 6+2) -Seasonic SSR 360 - 1x 6pin PCI-Express Connector
So, if 6 pin connectors are not as common on newer power supplies, be selective with which you buy. (Excuse me if I'm wrong here, just checking and don't understand all the terminology but imagine others are in the same situation.)
Can these 6 pin connectors be had via an adapter to an (e.g. 6+2 pin?, etc.)
Thanks, IA
edit - From what I have read, I think you can use an adapter to go from 6+2 PCI-E to 6 PCI-E. Can someone confirm that?

The 21.7 is a good deal but the 2.7 thumbs are a bit overpriced.

Hey,

This means for all you ex GPU mine heads, your giant PSU will potentially be able to run four double scrolls. That would be a good idea to include 2x 6-pin, as they're rated for 75W each, so 150W total. We'll have the option of using molex-to-6-pin adapters if needed. They're called 6-pin PCI-e by the way, to avoid any confusion. IMO good decision to use 12V instead of 5V, as the 3.3/5V rails on modern ATX power supplies are mostly an afterthought compared to the main 12V rail/s. Less efficient, and on certain models with group regulated designs, prone to go out of spec when put under a meaningful load: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Antec/HCG-520/5.htmlEDIT: 1x 6-pin PCI-e plus 1x molex would be another possible config, if it's practical to do. Every ATX PSU worth its salt has at least one of each of these connectors, so no adapters required.

That sounds highly compatible with my preferences re: power/voltage.

Wow! That is great Barntech (and great news about the 6+2 PCI-E connector - all PS's have that or the 6 if older. Tons of choices out there). You are getting just under 18 Ghash/s per board (if you had 8 chips). That is nice and such a huge jump from last week. Not really overclocking them much yet either. Good luck finding that perfect setting. So small, I really thought they would be larger. (I can always put the mini in a larger computer case with a noise generator and blinking lights to get that effect though, just for when company is over of course! ) Thanks for the pics, nice to see. So exciting to be this close. Congrats. Waiting for the go on 12V and I will order my Cooler Master V450S at 92% efficiency. (We need that with the rates here in Germany nearing .28 kwh) Its about sharing ps - CGMiner or BFGMiner on the Pi?

The 6 pin molex hes referring to are PCI-E adapters. Most PSU's will have these connectors now, some will have 2, some 4 or more.. The 6+2 are simply an 8pin PCI-E adapter, where the 2 extra pins can be unclipped from the other 6 pins (as you see in the pic that Barn posted), similar to when ATX adapters went from 20 pins to 24pins..

So small, I really thought they would be larger. (I can always put the mini in a larger computer case with a noise generator and blinking lights to get that effect though, just for when company is over of course! ) Indeed they're tiny. And now that they take 6-pin PCI-e for the miniplane, we have the option of using them seamlessly with a desktop PC if desired. Add them to the 5.25" bays of your fileserver/HTPC etc. if that's more efficient than using a separate computer. Or still hook them up to a laptop or rpi and do the paperclip trick to turn on the ATX PSU. Waiting for the go on 12V and I will order my Cooler Master V450S at 92% efficiency. (We need that with the rates here in Germany nearing .28 kwh) Very nice. I've dug up three suitable PSU's lying around (typical nerd ) Already on hand and efficient enough. This is for 4x boards on 1x miniplane (so ~120W from the wall) and a Dell Mini 9 (~6W from the wall) to run it. Looking to use Win 7 32-bit on its 16GB SSD (using RT Seven Lite to slim it down a bit).
