it seems like it will just adjust the algo to something like x11, but does it change the memory hardness schedule?

Lyra2 is a completely new (password hashing) algo, not used in any cryptocurrency. Lyra2RE is Lyra2 with reduced efficiency by chaining with other algos (like x11). It's not clear if vert is going to become multi-algo (lyra2 and lyra2RE) or one or the other or what, tbh...

Now is this at all similar to Aptcoin's algorithm? I have heard that they are doing some reduced efficancy stuff by having high n factors. But if the coin used something similar to x11 wouldn’t it be "more" efficient because the x11 uses less memory? I guess alot of this is yet to be determined.

We have just officially launched the Vert Community Alliance.

The official thread is at: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=764652

For ease of reading, the contents is below:

September 1st 2014

Today, Labor day in the US, 1-9-14 in the UK.

We launch:
Publically the "VCA" or Vert Community Alliance.

        The website www.thisisvtc.com.

The renaming of Vertcoin to Vert.

        The new logo.

And the start of something special.

We know that the community believes in Vert. We know that Vert can be something great. That is why, a month or so ago, we started an initiative to turn the tide and breathe fresh life into Vert.

In the run up to the new algorithm we felt that as a community we can't sit idly by and hold. We believe in Vert, so we must advance the project during the interim.

Today we start this process.

If you want to be a member, you only need to contact us (project@verters.com for now) - let us know what you can contribute, and why you believe in Vert.

Other than that, we ask you to work with us - to make something special.

If any service providers want a copy of the PSD versions of the logo (or other higher resolutions of either the Logo or the VCA logo - drop an email to the above address.

Any questions for us to answer. Let us know.

If you have a backup, go to: C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Vertcoin

Delete wallet.dat and replace it with your backup. Then re-start the wallet.

Are you sure you're using the latest release from here: https://github.com/vertcoin/vertcoin/releases

It shouldn't really matter, but it can't hurt. If it's not making any connections at all (starting to sync), then maybe you need to add some nodes. You can do that either in the conf file or from the debug console in the qt wallet.

Had a similar issue recently on a computer I havent turned on for a long time. It turns out that the system clock was wrong, thinking it was January 2008, which lead to the wallet issues. Check your system time.

Yes I am. I have made a copy of everything, deleted everything from the pc , and did a fresh install. it has begun to sync. once it is done synching, I will replace the wallet. bat from the backup. Am I right in believing that this would do it?

btw the system clock time is ok. thanks anyways!!!!!

Its good that your wallet is finally syncing. When your wallet sync gets finished , then just replace the wallet.dat file in Vertcoin folder with your old wallet. This should work hopefully.

Starting to get really excited about the upcoming improvements to VTC. Where many others are crashing and burning around us we've stabilized (still lower than some of us would like, but stabilized none the less) and are poised for a big push.

The timing is great too. These improvements coincide with the weather getting cooler and a lot of miners eager to get back into minting new coins.

I have been buying VTC throughout the summer but would much prefer to make my own. There's something about having coins you made yourself Smiley

Keep up the great work everyone!

Where is the scrypt-n asic? They are coming out.. but ive not seen a released one yet.

Or are you referring to the cloud mining contract that can do Scrypt-N or X11.. as in the FPGA.. and as we know FPGAs arent as efficient as GPUs at scrypt/scrypt-n. So its better to use a gpu mining contract than a fpga one with scrypt-n

No. I am not referring to cloud-mining contract. I mentioned ASIC/FPGA scrypt-n miners.

See what the owner of ltcgear said about it:

"Most asics can run scrypt-n"

"why in the hell developers  chose scrypt-n with n so low"

With the birth of VCA and the coming new algo Lyra2, we are indeed entering into an exciting era of Vertcoin.  Big cheers to all!

Doing my best to answer these:

"Most asics can run scrypt-n" - Simply not true unless n happens to be exactly the amount of memory used for that particular ASIC. In order to keep price in line they're producing scypt ASICs with the current n rate. If some of them jumped n + 1 to release then VTC would be usable with ASICs. This is not new news, Scrypt - n has always been ASIC resistant meaning we can go n + 2 and render the current n + 1 ASIC machine useless. The timetable we had was only a rough estimate. From day one it has been said that VTC would react to being ASIC mined by changing the algo.

"why in the hell developers  chose scrypt-n with n so low" - A few reasons.

- To keep older graphic cards in the loop. The higher you go with n the fewer graphic cards can be used to mine in a meaningful way. The mantra of VTC is to have as many people mining VTC as possible. To decentralize. Keeping n low allows this. Keeping in mind either n would increase when needed or a new algorithm would be selected if / when VTC became ASIC mined.

- Another thing I would be cognizant over when making the choice of n-factor is the hash rate of the coin. Right now anyone looking at hash rates to determine the health of a coin would have to double VTC's hash in order to get a more accurate reading. For every n factor increase of + 1 this rate would be cut a further 50% meaning if we were n-factor + 2 you would have to multiply by 4 to get the current hash, +3 would be multiplied by 8 and so on.

To keep things in perspective technology is increasing at an exponential rate. Meaning that the hardware truly helps determine where our n - factor (or different scrypt) falls into keeping VTC anti ASIC. We will react to the current technology to keep these factors in check. Sometimes that means being proactive which is the goal, sometimes that means being reactive. Either way VTC will maintain it's commitment to staying ASIC RESISTANT (not proof).
