I'm trying to understand how this works. Forging is running a node to support the network and return transaction fees are rewarded to individual nodes. I understand forging rewards will be proportional to your stash size?

What you're talking about is 100% POS. NEM is going to use POI which includes more factors besides POS. Details will be released in time - you can browse this thread for some rough explanations.

The forum strives to allow free discussion of any ideas. All policies are built around this principle. This doesn't mean you can post garbage, though: posts should actually contain ideas, and these ideas should be argued reasonably.

Maybe NEM will have some benefits from the Egalitarian.
There will not be such whales (unless there are some groups of sockpuppets), who are just waiting ...

The question is does it make a difference if you have few people harding a lot compared to many people hoarding less. POI will be a huge factor here but I still think many stakeholders are going to sit on their NEM waiting to dump it once it get's the first big spike.

...that will be scary interesting to see ...

If this cryptocurrency panic (MtGox, Bitcoin drop -30%, rise, drop, ...) will vanish and cryptocurrencies will get stabilized, also NEM has an opportunity to grow steadily.
What will be after 4 - 10 years? NEM community world wide, independent from USD, Euro. The value of 1 nem could be XXXX times, what it is after the launch and after the first spike.
Who has the courage to sell and then just look NEM growing Smiley

This can be both a good and bad thing.

Yes, people can dump, but this just means those who recognize the value in NEM will buy up. Yes, sure, this may mean existing stakeholders may just accumulate more NEM, making the distribution more unbalanced, but this may not necessarily be a bad thing if said individual has their priorities right and actually has an active involvement in (this) community/thread.

In regards to my own stake, i hope to contribute as much as i can to the community as i lack the knowledge and experience to do so in any other way.

I may not participate much, but i pay much attention to threads such as this.

What i'm seeing in regards to NXT is pretty much exactly what i feared; A select minority -- who have no involvement in the community -- accumulating large sums, with the sole intent to likely dump as soon as it's valuable. It goes without saying that if you hold a large sum in any crypto, it's in YOUR long term interest to cooperate with the community as much as possible. Sadly greed often blinds people and it wouldn't surprise me if they do this with an agenda...sabotage the coin, perhaps.

yes ... long term, years, and if US and EU and others can't get corrected the wrong direction that the world economy took in 2008, then who knows, if the cryptocurrencies will be more important than the common currencies.
The USD & al needs trust. Well, years 2008 - 2009 showed to us that trusting the system may be your last error. So, it is better to trust systems, which are independent on humans' errors and greediness. Maybe cryptos are as near such as it is currently possible?

Sabotage ... yes. It is not a new method. In the last Wars enemy countries planned to print other country's money, fake money (that's the forgery) to drive that country's economy down. In cryptos ... etc.

Can someone explain to me what a decentralized exchange is and just exactly how it would work? Say I wanted to send USD to this exchange...where would that money go?

Now this is just to cheer up all the NEM'sters out there. A quote from NXT's official thread from come-from-beyond when talking about NXT's distribution:

The main issue I see is distributing the coins to enough people.

Agree. Without at least 100 users on start the whole currency is pointless. I would spend collected bitcoins for advertising instead of development of advanced features.

We have a wonderful community atm! If NXT has gotten this far with 73 stakeholders, just imagine what 3000 NEM'sters with better distribution can do Cheesy!

It's cool, but I don't know about the "M." Seems a but unclear to me. If I didn't know what NEM was, I'm not sure I'd be able to differentiate letters on a quick glance.

Thats a really important point. People who work hard in development and marketing, communication, ideas......need sometimes to rest.
With that much members there may other members take over some work and bring in fresh sights. So it will be very inspiring and
it's sort of very interesting experiment how fast and how far we can go.....

Nope. So far there're 25294 Nxt's accs, part of accs - transit points, part - robbed/sold completely, part - darkNXT and in the end unknown amount of real people. Inintial was ~100 BTC addresses.

And so far for NEM ~3k BTT's accs, unknown amount of real people.

Redistribution could be more important for long-term success than initial distribution itself. Let's see how it'll roll out.

I think we both know that I was talking about the fact that there were 73 NXT stakeholders at the beginning. There will be no question about will NEM have more individual stakeholders from the start.

Words "so far" I disagreed with.
