1361  Economy / Economics / Re: Expert: Banks are Enthusiastic Towards Crypto, Waiting for Regulators to Invest on: October 10, 2018, 11:12:03 AM
So when are regulators finally going to approve crypto as a viable investment vehicle?
We've basically only seen bad news in that regard, so why would we keep our hopes up for them to finally start regulating crypto?

I've gotten into crypto to move away from banks, to I personally couldn't care less if banks weren't able to offer any crypto-related services.
On the other hand, it would certainly be great for the prices, I wouldn't mind seeing another bull run to be honest Tongue
1362  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't start your day by checking the price of bitcoin in the morning. on: October 10, 2018, 10:46:09 AM
--snip--
Question for viewers, if an investor is struggling with this addiction (checking the price of bitcoin daily), what steps do you suggest he uses to overcomes it.

Edited: this is an advise to investors not day traders, findings have shown that day traders don't live long and majority of them develop High blood pressure over time.

And why checking the price of bitcoin in the morning should be a bad habit? After all, this is a very organic and actionable act for every human being. After all, the fluctuations in the Bitcoin price have an effect on the investor's future. Therefore, I find it helpful to track the price and respond to changes in a timely manner.

Yeah I also don't really see anything wrong with checking the prices every day. I certainly wouldn't call it an addiction, since it doesn't cause you any harm.
Even if you're not a day trader, it's always a good idea to check the prices often.

I mean even as a long-term investor you might want to take some actions in case of a sudden price shift.
1363  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Taking a break from gambling on: October 10, 2018, 10:30:18 AM
I dont see why instead of quitting the solution cant be to just reduce the amount gambled, to whatever is a reasonable budget.   So that could be as little as what you spend on snacks for a week, so really small amounts but if the gamble pays off then you get the larger amount to roll forward.

If people can stick to keeping a sensible budget then I see no reason to quit however if its beyond self control at this point and the idea of a budget is laughable then I'd agree that just an absolute stop may be the best thing after all.  I recognise thats the correct strategy for some but also I dont believe any person can avoid the concept of risk in their lives, its just a naturally occurring thing that has to be dealt with every day to some extent hence why I mention money budgeting as maybe the real dilemma to resolve long term

Well, I had thought about that, but I opted to take a break because I was also losing too much time with it.
Okay, I could have limited the time spent on gambling as well, but I was honestly getting a bit tired of gambling.

I haven't started again, but when I do, I will get a better grasp on my spending habits and the amount of time spent on gambling.

Side note: Might lock this thread soon if there aren't any interesting replies anymore. Just to avoid this turning into a spam thread.
1364  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: need an advice about finding crypto influencers on: October 10, 2018, 09:51:04 AM
I think that the best way to go about finding them is just look them up on the social media platforms themselves and shoot them an e-mail.
Sure, as others have pointed out, you do have agencies that list influencers, but I think it's preferable to just contact them yourself and cut out the middle man.

It's not that hard to find them really, just search for anything crypto related on Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Steemit, etc. and pick the people with the most popular content.
1365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and privacy!!! on: October 10, 2018, 09:32:28 AM
-snip-

In the light of above explanation, should Bitcoin be upgraded by a confidential blockchain system which is scalable too?

Quite a few mistakes in your explanation, as pooya87 explained in his reply, but your question is legitimate in my opinion.

I'm very much in favour of keeping all records public, as they are now. Bitcoin was never meant to be a privacy focused coin.
There are far better alternatives if you want privacy. Now I don't have too much knowledge about the technical side of things, but I would think that there are far more interesting features to add, besides privacy.

As others have said, you can also use TOR, so that's already one way that you can greatly improve your privacy when using Bitcoin.

I'd put all the time and effort in getting schnorr signatures added for example. Seems way more useful than adding more privacy measures.
1366  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: A banking app helped me beat my addiction on: October 09, 2018, 10:16:39 AM
Really great story, I think every bank should have features like that and not just for gambling.
I mean, so many people have problems with overspending in general, having the ability to temporarily lock away funds is really useful.

Don't forget that it's also possible to do this with Bitcoin. You can lock away coins in a time lock, if you really want to prevent yourself from spending too much.

1367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do not be this type of Bitcoiner on: October 09, 2018, 09:34:21 AM
I also don't think that messages like these help Bitcoin in any way. It just makes it look like Bitcoin is a currency for conspiracy theorists.
Now, I personally do believe that Bitcoin could be a great store of value, in case of economic turmoil, but when people start making predictions about the collapse of fiat, it makes it seem like a conspiracy theory.

I really liked this response to the tweet:

Quote
I don't think this message resonates with many potential investors. Why do you keep pushing it? People don't want instability and revolution, and there's no reason to think that a collapse of fiat money is a prerequisite for Bitcoin to succeed as an investment.

1368  Economy / Gambling / Re: ★ Crypto-Games.net ★ 4 Years Old ★ 58.000$ wagering contest ★ on: October 08, 2018, 12:38:04 PM
Bitcoin investment is closed, right? Where we can read more about what coins can be invested and how it works. Thanks.

Just a personal tip for when you're looking to invest in a certain coin.
Always check the statistics of that coin on Crypto-Games.

You might want to invest in a coin that has a decent amount of wagering going on.
Very easy to check those stats, when you go to Statistics > All Data

You can do this for every coin they have listed, just select any game for any coin and view the 'Statistics' tab on that page.
1369  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 2 life sentences +40 years for The Silk Road creator (PETITION FOR CLEMENCY) SIG on: October 08, 2018, 11:30:57 AM
He broke the law, that's a fact, but I can't imagine someone getting a life sentence in any European country for creating a website. It's restricted only to most dangerous, hardened criminals. Even murderers get between 15 and 25 years in prison.

It was more, far more, than just a website.

And the chances are that if he'd been another nationality he would've wound up being extradited to the US anyway.

Anyone who runs a dark market now will get a few years. Anyone who was the first to do it would've been in bottomlessly deep shit no matter where they are.

Very true, it was pretty obvious that he was to be made an example for anyone trying to copy him.
We all saw how that turned out  Roll Eyes They basically cut off the hydra's head and several others came in its place...

The sentencing is just ridiculous imo, even if it was true that he tried to have people killed.
Sure, attempted murder should land you in prison for a couple of years at minimum, but a life sentence is too much even for those serious accusations.
Just my two cents though... I'm sure that people will disagree.
1370  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BPIP.org Chrome Extension on: October 07, 2018, 10:37:57 AM
Just a heads up, I tested the extension in Firefox, it seems to work well.
-snip-

Thanks for the kind words! I'll probably end up adding an icon to it so that the default icon doesn't show though lol. (I'm assuming the green icon is the FF default)

Should have the extension up on both app stores shortly. I just have to iron out the details & get everything setup Smiley

Once  I add the icon, I may make some options on that icon itself (the one that goes on your browser window header). Are there any options requests? For example, settings, ability to turn on/off, etc?

Yeah it's the Firefox default icon for extensions, also it gets completely removed when I restart Firefox, so adding it to the store would be very helpful Cheesy

I'm not sure what kind of settings you could add, except for the ability to turn it on and off.
Change of position or size of the icon perhaps? Though I'm not sure if there would be a good alternative place to put it.
1371  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Would a crypto-based universal basic income actually work? on: October 06, 2018, 02:56:21 PM
No, doing UBI via cryptocurrency is just a bad idea. To start with, UBI fundamentally needs to be centralized because a decentralized system can't determine who the unique humans are. You need to either rely on existing centralized government databases (which may also be flawed/corrupted...) or you need your own centralized testing personnel/devices.

What about something like uPort? I'm not sure if the project is already operational and I'm also not quite sure if that could actually be used to tie you to a real-world identity.
https://medium.com/uport/the-basics-of-decentralized-identity-d1ff01f15df1

Second, a decentralized cryptocurrency can only make money for "the system" through very blunt/stupid methods such as inflation and transaction fees, and this doesn't scale much. People won't use a cryptocurrency that's going to inflate a lot: that'd be stupid, and people aren't that stupid.

I hadn't even mentioned crypto UBI 'generating' money through inflation and transaction fees. Seemed pretty obvious that something like that wouldn't work, though then the question arises why there's a need for a crypto-based UBI in the first place, indeed.

The main point of my post was that the majority of these UBI crypto projects are almost fully reliant on either subsidization or grandiose plans to create a cryptocurrencies with significant standalone merit (like you mentioned). I would still like to hear some counterarguments from other people, but I'm afraid that there might not be many counterarguments to offer.

IMO a better idea would be to compete with Patreon: subsidize non-traditional work so that people can escape the 9-to-5 nonsense. But even then, I suspect that creating a new cryptocurrency would be counter-productive; you don't need to shoe-horn a new coin into every little thing.

Something like that already kinda exists on the Steem blockchain, but only for a specific subset of non-traditional work. There you have the Utopian Project, which allows contributors to Open-Source projects to earn rewards for their voluntary work. I reckon that it would be possible to fork the project, to also apply to other sorts of work. Everything is manually moderated, so there's definitely the possibility of bias towards certain contributions/contributors.

1372  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What are the most promising cryptocurrencies? on: October 05, 2018, 07:52:45 PM
I'm looking forward to seeing how much the LBRY project will grow in the next couple of years.
It's a very interesting concept that they have, offering a digital streaming/download marketplace, that's fully open source.

More than that actually, they're basically working on making a protocol out of they LBRY project, so it basically becomes the go-to solution for decentralized streaming/downloads.

They're still at a very early stage, barely have any marketcap or volume, but their software is already very usable and they have a lot of developer support.
1373  Other / Serious discussion / Would a crypto-based universal basic income actually work? on: October 05, 2018, 05:03:58 PM
Lately I've been very interested in looking at all the different cryptocurrencies that have the goal of providing people with a universal basic income.
I currently have a whopping 24 projects listed in my Overview of Universal Basic Income Crypto Projects thread, so I think I've seen pretty much every basic income related cryptocurrency out there.

One thing I've noticed while doing research on all of these projects, is that almost none of them seem to have realistic means of actually giving their cryptocurrency any value.

I would argue that Manna is one of the projects that currently the most far ahead, but I don't really see how something like this can succeed without ongoing donations/crowdfunding/philanthropic investments/...

From what would these basic income cryptocurrencies gain value? Why would people buy these coins from exchanges, if you take out any purchases for philanthropic reasons?

Some of these basic income coins are hoping to build some sort of internal marketplace (for goods and services) that would create demand for the currency, but I don't see that working on a large scale.
Swiftdemand is one coin that goes for an approach like that, while Manna seems to focus more on getting funding from the public and NGO's.

If you're looking at the price charts of Manna for example, you can see that its value has been steadily dropping to a measly $0.000786 USD or 0.00000012 BTC.

Source: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/manna/

I just don't immediately see how any of these project could become 'self-sufficient'. I would think that they would always need some form of institutional funding to keep their value up, since almost everybody would just be selling the basic income they would receive from them.

I'd like to hear your input on this.
1374  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling addiction becomes more popular with young people over time on: October 05, 2018, 02:07:44 PM
I think young people nowadays know the bad and good benefits of gambling yet because of addiction and the urge to earn a lot of money in a fast way they intent to play and play and forget that gambling isn't a good way of making money. Yes, you will earn good yet you will not hold your money a longer because it will loose only in gambling if they don't stop.

It's true that young people are becoming more interested in playing gambling games over time. However, since most are inexperienced, they could easily lose everything they had saved, as they become addicted and greedy to the game. Once they're extremely addicted into a gambling game, it's nearly impossible for them to get out, since they always want to gamble more with the hopes of becoming rick quick. What they don't truly realize is that the field of Gambling is based on pure luck, and it's possible to either win big money or lose it all in the long run.

This becomes worst if the gambling game is already rigged by the owner, which will make you lose more than what you earn eventually. Provably fair games are best to place your bets in them, but even so, they're still risky. IMO, young people should get educated about this business first before deciding to place their bets in a gambling game. To stay safe, it's advised to simply withdrawal or cash out the money once you've won to preserve your profit. Just my opinion Smiley

I'm not sure if experience has anything to do with having more chance to get addicted.

I'd say that the main reason why gambling is especially dangerous for young people, is because their brain is not fully developed yet.
Thus causing any sort of chemical imbalance at a young age, whether it's through gambling, drugs, etc., isn't the best idea.

I'm not just talking about minors btw, your brain isn't fully developed yet until you're around 25 years old
1375  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / 6 Crypto Projects with the largest developer communities on: October 05, 2018, 11:58:51 AM
Just found a small interesting article, which lists the coins with the largest amount of developers working on their projects.
Not surprisingly, Ethereum came out on top, with over 1000 developers contributing code the the project.

One interesting coin on that list is definitely LBRY, which has 334 developers and 19 of them were actively contributing to the code (active developers last week).
I say interesting, because the coin barely has any volume or marketcap.

1376  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What are your opinions of shapeshift on: October 05, 2018, 11:21:40 AM
Might be worth it to use another service if you want to remain anonymous, Shapeshift definitely requires KYC now.
You can always go with blocktrades or changelly.

Blocktrades doesn't have too many coins listed, but you don't even need an account to exchange crypto.
On Changelly you do need an account, but no KYC as far as I'm aware.
If I had to choose between Blocktrades or Changelly, I’d likely use Changelly. It’s got more pairs, is more established as well, being a competitor with Shapeshift before the entire KYC thing came. I’ve used them in the past and the experience I had with them was pleasant, funds moved in quickly as soon as my transaction was confirmed.

Unfortunately, it also appears Changelly is starting to do KYC on certain transactions. I was browsing the Changelly subreddit, and one post that caught my eye was a user stating his transaction was flagged for KYC. If you’re going the anti-KYC route, I wouldn’t risk it with Changelly. The subreddit also seems to mostly be filled with negative posts towards Changelly; I haven’t used the site in a few months, so it is possible that things have changed since then.

Yeah I have to agree with you, it's just handy that you don't have to create an account with Blocktrades. I only use it to buy Steem, which isn't supported on Changelly or Shapeshift anymore.

Oh dang, looks like all these instant exchange sites will have to have KYC in the future. It definitely sucks that you can't just swap coins anonymously anymore.
1377  Other / Meta / Re: Petition for new mods who will ban users who troll and harass sites on: October 05, 2018, 11:07:17 AM
The gambling section could definitely use more moderators, just to get rid of the general spam.
I'd be very careful though as to not remove any obvious fake negative feedback. If you start removing that, we would go onto a very slippery slope, maybe ending up with sites taking advantage of it to exit scam.

If Game-Protect really does send threatening pm's, I would definitely consider that to be an offense for which he should get banned.
Maybe you should just /ignore him in the meantime and make a report thread about him on the Meta boards.
1378  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Get Onboard Asia's Largest Festival at Sea with Cryptocurrency! on: October 05, 2018, 10:54:28 AM
That was the point as all of our content is supposed to look like an 80's glitch ad! We're actually on to our fifth sailing this year, and it's about to be our biggest one yet!

Hmm I don't know if it's such a good idea to make your advertisements look like like late 90's internet advertisement scams.
The rest of it does look pretty legit though when you visit the website.

Pretty cool that you're accepting cryptocurrency though. How long has this festival been running? Is this the first edition?

It does bring a sense of nostalgia, I just don't know if it really bring about good feelings though, those ads were so annoying! Cheesy

While it's really not an event for me, but I wish you the best nonetheless.
1379  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin and the Interplanetary Frontier on: October 05, 2018, 10:48:28 AM
The quickest way I can think of the Moon becoming permanently habitable is by digging out and pressurizing large underground caverns and piping in sunlight to grow food. We will need to send lots of organic material to mix with the exiting lunar soil.

It definitely makes sense to go underground on the moon. Since there is almost no atmosphere, the amount of solar radiation any future inhabitants would get, would just be too much over the long term.
Those caverns would offer some natural protection from the harmful radiation. Same story on Mars, although Mars does have some atmosphere left, it does occasionally receive deadly blasts of radiation after strong solar flares.

Sources:
https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2005/08sep_radioactivemoon

absurd, why send it to the moon or interplanetary, when it is not yet even accepted and ambraced internationally here in our planet, it is not yet in thd mainstream market, and who would you trade it with in outerspace? aliens, lol. kidding aside, i think we must full utilized crypto across the world before we think of leaping outside earth.

Okay, but that doesn't mean we can't start thinking about possible ways to use crypto in space. It's just a thought experiment...

There's something I've been meaning to ask you.

I was planning on writing an article about the investments on Crypto Games, I'd like to also mention this thread, add a short summary and a link to the thread of course.
Now I was wondering if I could use one of your charts as a (secondary) image in that article. I'll add proper references to you and your thread.

Let me know if that's something you'd be comfortable with, me using the image, I mean.

Replying here instead of sending a pm, just so the possible permission is publicly visible.
