1741  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Support Problems on: December 23, 2015, 11:40:04 PM
Bitmain is not a bad company but a busy company.

Is there a difference? As far as customer support goes. With the amount of money they're rolling over, hiring one guy that can speak English and do tech support full time is not actually that much to ask.
1742  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Recommended sites to purchase bitcoins? on: December 23, 2015, 11:17:43 PM
Might be impossible depending on where you live.
Transaction with a credit card is extremely risky for the seller.

Location has been a problem for me, sucks.

Well, where are you? North America -> Coinbase. Elsewhere you can check for Cex.IO thats where my friend from south america gets his.
1743  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How do you get free power? on: December 23, 2015, 11:14:09 PM
If you have the right amount of money to be invested in renewable energy.. You can get free energy..

Its not free if you had to invest money in order to get it. To get free electricity, you need to find a deal where you pay a flat access to your electricity(Included in rent that you need anyways) and then consuming more electricity does not cost more money.

1745  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are paper wallets really secure? on: December 23, 2015, 03:24:22 PM
Not sure if its secure enough actually. It must depend to where you are like walking around in this tropical country with your paper wallet makes it more vulnerable lol. Or you could lose all its funds when rain suddenly drops while you walk without worries puffing your cigar. p[aper wallet isn't safe when half way going to your house/hotel is a 5 foot flood.

These things should be stored in safes and a paper wallet does not need to be made out of paper. Its just a concept. Personally i'd put it as a digital QR picture and slap it on a couple of CDs and store them safely.
1746  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Small setup to learn about mining on: December 23, 2015, 03:22:44 PM
I wouldn't learn as much if I joined through a pool. Cost is not relevant, as I am not seeking to make a profit. I want to do it via a battery, because I may switch to solar power in the future. I am aware that the voltage will need to be regulated, and that is a simple matter to control.

Now to the original question. Will a single ASIC miner still attermpt to mine, or will it be swamped by the mass of corporate miners active at the moment.

I'm not sure what you imagine by being swamped by a mass of miners, its not like you're prevented from trying to mine a block. The difficulty is the difficulty, the target share your miner need to find to be a valid block.

You can reduce your performance and complicate your setup by setting up your own pool and try to solo mine. Because of the network hashrate is so high, your miner won't return any valid work (most likely). Its better to join a solo pool, that way you will have share tracking to make sure your miner is performing as it should.

But no the only thing that the existant network hashrate create against you is the target difficulty. Your miner won't explode or anything.

I just think setting up your own pool and "learning to setup a miner" are two completely different endeavor.

Here are the current stats for my wolfpack
These are running in a datacenter.
Temps seem a bit cool.
218 will be here tomorrow.
These are all batch ones.

Nice pack of miners. Why are they named S5:#.###? They are S7's not S5's. xD *Not OCD at all*
1748  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S7 Failed Firmware Update on: December 23, 2015, 03:01:47 PM
Check the market thread.

Some one may be selling a controller.

Will a controller from a different batch work for a him? I'm guessing the hiccup happens because hardware wise the S7 are different (daughterboard) but the controller(BBB) should be the same?
1749  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S7 Failed Firmware Update on: December 23, 2015, 02:04:15 PM
Yeah there are quite a few people that have issue with flashing, because there are different version for different batch of S7. So people recommend not to flash it. But did you try a factory reset, with the on board reset button?

Yeah I tried a factory reset (and again just before I replied just in case!!!) and no luck. The annoying thing is that I have 2 antminers that I got at the same time (Batch 1) and updated with the same firmware but one works the other doesn't....

Thanks for the advice though, I think I am going to try running both off 1 controller for now

Sorry to hear that. Some people in Batch 1 got different batch miners. Might be the hiccup. I don't know if the S7 controller has a SD card slot that it is configured to boot from if slotted in. You could check that but if not i don't know how you could unbrick it.

Since the reset button does not work, i think philipma1957's verdict is exact.
1750  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S7 Failed Firmware Update on: December 23, 2015, 01:51:36 PM
Hi All

As per the title, I upgraded an Antminer S7 to the latest firmware and it never came backup (1 of 2 so def not a bad download). I have checked my DHCP Server for new IP addresses, no suck luck. There was 100% no power issues during the upgrade as the miner is in my works server room and I would have heard alot about it if there had been, the only thing that might have done it was switching browser tabs during the upload but I don't think so. The green light and fans never come on.... help!!

Any advice on how to recover this would be amazing, I know the S7 uses a beaglebone and the other equipment I have the uses it (kncminers) can be reflashed from an SD card but I don't know the S7 will.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes definitely Luck.  My Batch 8 using the same 220V IBM 2KW won't change in hash rate by moving to 775 or 800M.  Have to increase the voltage to see some gain like what Phillip did.

There is no point in changing the voltage on a Batch 6, 8 or 9. They have a Buck Converter built onto the Hash board that controls the voltage sent to the chips. Good news is that at some point I am sure a mod will be available that will enable the Core Voltage to be adjusted.

Rich
I won't have access to the S7 for the next 8-9 days, but I'll definitely change the 6k8 resistor as soon as I'm back.
800MHz, 5,3Th is still too low. I'm sure we can do 900.
And I'll probably try to get an earlier batch with 162 chips later to see how it can be overclocked.

The batch 2 I have goes to 631 freq and it is rated 575 freq

I am using your 2880 watter with  12.2 volts  lots of overhead as I am running 1 miner on it.

The earlier batches probably have more, undervolted chips. While the later batches have less, overvolted chips. So i'm guessing the earlier batches with the most chips would be able to get the most out of overvolting.

Assuming nothing else fry when you try it.
1752  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Here's a converter that will turn your 120 volt US plug into 220 volt plug. on: December 23, 2015, 11:35:58 AM
gives u the vlots but NOT amps ! that thing will either melt or blow up in no time.

Well it says 2500w, so running a single S7 might be doable, but in the best case scenario, you're raising your costs for nothing. I don't see a gain on using this and you're just adding one more iffy Chinese thing that can burst into flame.
1753  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Usb miners that pay more than they consume in power on: December 23, 2015, 11:30:12 AM
USB miners is like the dumbest decision you'll ever make... They profit you literally nothing, especially with the difficulty rising quickly.

Dunno, they make amazing lottery miners. They have a different purpose than let say a S5. They fill a different niche and just like any other hardware, some sticks are great (sidehack stick 8-23GH/s+) some sticks are horrible choices (nano, 400MH/s, etc whatever).

isn't better at this point to try your luck with the best faucets freebtcio, which give you a lottery, which is far easy and it's almost free and no electricity cost?

I don't know, do you stand to win 25BTC at one in a millions odd every day all year?

I kind of doubt some faucet operator would make enough money to come up with such a big prize, and if there is indeed such a prize that get accumulated, i would doubt it get handed off often.

That would also not teach you how mining BTC work. I think a USB stick is great to get the hang of it, since when you're getting your tiny payouts on the stick, going to real miners is actually a easier endeavor.
1754  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Small setup to learn about mining on: December 23, 2015, 11:26:05 AM
I'm considering trying to put together a small mining setup for my own education. I expecty to make a loss, and I think it unlikely that I will receive any revenue in the current mining environment. What I am thinking of doing is buying an out-of-date ASIC miner on one of the net sales sites (or this forum), and running it from a car battery. With this setup, I will not be able to join a pool, and I would prefer to run it myself to increase my knowledge of Bitcoin anyway. Is this a stupid idea that won't provide much useful info for me?

Once again, I don't expect to make any money from this. It is purely for my own education.

Depending on what it cost you the recharge the car battery, you might be able to make up your loss. Why would you not be able to mine at a pool? You don't have internet or you plan on powering the miner on your mobile car? Tongue

I don't see why you want to do it this way, i'd think you'd have some issue with the varying voltage of the car battery. You'd need to actually mine at a pool to get any reading on if you succeeded or not.
1755  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Here's a converter that will turn your 120 volt US plug into 220 volt plug. on: December 23, 2015, 11:17:59 AM
Its much cheaper to just use a good 120v PSU, there's both ATX and server solution here. You're adding costs at no gain, you're adding a point of failure and i bet these things are prone to catching fire.

You'll be losing efficiency, which you won't really gain back from using 240v PSU.
If you have this much money to throw around, just get a P/T rated PSU for cheaper than this thing and you'll have more efficiency than 240v gold.
1756  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Beginning of mining and hardware investment. on: December 23, 2015, 03:41:41 AM
Ha I just thought of something. What if I ran a couple of miners in my double bunk OTR Volvo truck. The company pays for the fuel and I got all the power I want already @ 12 volt and my unlimited data plan from Verizon will cover the internet connection. That'd be all profit after equipment, ha.
Right now the truck pretty much runs 24/7 when Im in it, Monday to Friday or Saturday straight.

You might find that 12v @ 110-500amp is going to drain looots of fuel. That sound like a pretty bad way to go about it. Though if your job does not notice your gaz consumption get suddenly multiplied by 20, they deserve to lose the money. Tongue

well then, that's no fun. I better stick to my job before i call the boss. But if the S7 drops value that fast, shouldn't you be able to buy an S3 "buy 1 get 10 free" style?

Values of miners eventually kind of bottoms out. New miners always devalue very quickly.

The S7 was 1800-1900 at first and now its 1000-1350 in very little time. Eventually it will stabilize, since soon after a new generation enter, the difficulty goes mad. Value of hardware depend on profitability, so with new hardware entering the market automatically = to a devaluation of every miners.

The S3 are very nice and pretty cheap, you can probably get some for 80$USD~ But its useful for others, while probably not useful for you, because of your electricity cost.

However, if you need heating during the winter, then buying some miners to heat with ASIC instead of normal heating mean you make a bit of money instead of having to pay for heating.
1759  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Usb miners that pay more than they consume in power on: December 23, 2015, 12:10:04 AM
Think about how many satoshis will you earn every day with an usb stick minner, i think that will be a very low number, the usb stick has low electricity costs, but needs your computer running (that has higher electricity costs). I don't see it as a good investment.

Thats true, but most people run USB sticks off a RasPI or other devices that are already running 24/7. philipma1957 has a very nice setup with big USB hubs. Its very fun stuff to play with, though at some point you may want to look into something like a S5 if what you want is raising your hashrate.
1760  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How do you get free power? on: December 23, 2015, 12:02:17 AM
Some of the users on this forum made posts where they claim to get free power, where do they get this power from?

There is really no such thing as free power... You'll eventually get caught and get kicked out of your place.

Several location in the world has free electricity, few cents per Month per kWh. And there are quite a few "electricity included in rent" deals in places where electricity is cheap. And here, if electricity is included but you take too much, the landlord does not have ground to kick you out.

If you abuse, he has legal right to request you to tone it down, but unless you run a 20kW mine in your living room, i think you'll be just fine.
