581  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Paycoin (XPY) is scam on: March 23, 2015, 11:10:45 PM
Maybe its a scam,l dont know.
Oh, it most definitely is.

Look at it this way:
Based on a massive amount of evidence, (ie everything that has ever happened with it)  PayCoin is either a huge scam, or an equally massive fuck-up.
Either way, it doesn't look like a good project to put any of your cash, BTC, or faith into.
582  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: We Need To Stop This NOW!!!! on: March 22, 2015, 12:21:25 PM

We are not talking about released clients. We are talking about attackers quoting devs posts like on twistercoin (which has been deleted now since I reported it.) and replacing the windows qt links with a malicious one. No one is saying a wallet is not safe....

Being honest here, I've done something similar on BTT a couple of times in the course of one of my little disputes/mega arguments, except not actually pointing to malware, but to a scam alert site.  It's incredibly easy to do, and an effective way to disrupt someones thread.
You'd be amazed how many people blindly click a quoted link without ever checking it.....

Good idea from SF, and we should be alert for this shit.
Never click on a quoted link within BTT without checking out exactly where it's taking you.....

**snipped a bit**
Some people have no concept of ethics at all.  Danny does.  The bitcoin community is very short on people with ethics.

Now give me my $15!

English ethics joke, with a Discworld flavour:

" Ëthics, Igor, ever heard of the concept ? "

" That'th eathy..... it'th jutht thouth of Thuffolk, Marthter "

 Roll Eyes

I'll get me coat.......

585  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT coin - A total scam? on: March 20, 2015, 07:13:56 AM
NXT is being used to launder BTC or other forms of money

This seems to be an original accusation. +1!

Yay, that rules! Haven't seen an original NXT horror story in a very long time.

And who the f*** are those 4 or 5 mythical whales who own all the NXT ? Name some names, please.
586  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: March 19, 2015, 09:31:58 PM
As we may not have mentioned (  Grin ):

NXT is one of the Platinum Sponsors, together with Manx Telecom, for the upcoming Mind The Gap crypto-conference
Mind The Gap will be held online, using the CryptoMoneyExpo virtual conference platform,
and is intended as an event that will bridge the worlds of crypto, gambling, finance/payment processing and mobile money applications.

Here's the full story, courtesy of Manx Telecom:

Quote
NXT and Manx Telecom are Platinum sponsors at Mind The Gap crypto currency expo.

Manx Telecom, the Isle of Man’s leading communications provider and only twin Tier 3 data centre operator, is proud to announce their platinum sponsorship of the Mind The Gap Expo on 10th April 2015, alongside the 'Blockchain 2.0' crypto-currency platform NXT and featuring speakers from around the world talking about crypto/digital currencies.

Described as ‘building the bridge between the crypto and financial worlds’ and attracting over 2,500 registrants in advance, the virtual exhibition will showcase key players of the rapidly developing digital currencies sector. Commenting on the company’s sponsorship, Dale White, UK and Channel Islands Business Development Manager, who is speaking at the event said:

“Innovation and pioneering new technology have always been part of Manx Telecom’s role in developing the Isle of Man’s competitiveness as an international business and finance centre. The digital currencies sector is a perfect fit, combining Manx Telecom’s world class data hosting facilities at Douglas North and Greenhill data centres with our diverse, global connectivity via off-Island cable links and/or our mobile roaming agreements with over 180 countries. We’re looking forward to working closely with Coinstructors as organisers of the Expo and our other Isle of Man colleagues across government, fiduciary, legal and banking sectors to grow our customer base in this sector.”

Virtual exhibitions such as Mind The Gap are becoming more common. Hosted in an online environment similar to a three dimensional website, they offer all the same layout, functionality and promotional opportunities as physical exhibitions, but without the travel, logistics and high costs to exhibit, and are free to attend.

Lee Gibson Grant, Founder at Coinstructors, added:

“We’re delighted to have Manx Telecom on-board supporting what will be a major event in the digital currencies calendar this year.
As a jurisdiction, the Isle of Man has lots to offer in terms of telecommunications and power infrastructure, corporation and personal tax, inward investment grants and business-friendly legislation. We’re honoured to showcase the best the Isle of Man has to offer on a global stage to our visitors.”

See www.mindthegapexpo.com for further information, speakers and sponsors

587  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: is ethereum actually going to launch on the 20th and in what condition? on: March 16, 2015, 08:01:06 PM

What's even harder to believe is people bought ethercoin at several times ether ico price. Buying from scammers who "promise" coins from original scam. Does it get any dumber than that?

Yeah, and just to drive the point home a bit....EtherCoin is NOT Ethereum.
The EtherCoin devs claim to hold enough Ethereum to backup their token, but whether they do or not is a big question.
One that may be answered pretty soon....

591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: is ethereum actually going to launch on the 20th and in what condition? on: March 15, 2015, 08:01:32 PM
This could be fun........imagine a shitload of Eth investors who've never seen a command line trying to cash out without a GUI.
We may need to buy popcorn.

But, is this really gonna happen ? I can almost hear the screams of 'unfair' already.
592  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin becoming Netscape who will be Firefox, Chrome? on: March 13, 2015, 10:14:43 PM
I'm going for NXT as Firefox, naturally.
I witnessed the great browser wars of the early 21st century, and Firefox started off just like NXT: too techy, only used by nerds, ....etc.
But after a shitload of constant development, and a decade of adoption, look at the little Fox now.

See for some history:

594  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which is the most environmentally friendly, energy-efficient altcoin? on: March 11, 2015, 05:28:56 PM

The NXT paper posted above came up with figures that suggest that NXT uses less than 1% of the power needed to run BTC, assuming both currencies had the same transaction volumes.

Getting back to somewhere on-topic, there's a paper on NXT energy efficiency as compared to Bitcoin:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J8uhdshu9epGRrQHBaloGc4itdvuAHZDAUtNDjOhz-8/edit?pli=1

In this paper, it's not only just "less than 1 %", let's look at the exact claim there, citation:

Quote
"Nxt will require 66 MWh while Bitcoin requires 520,000 MWh per year.
520,000 MWh / 66 MWh =7,878
Therefore, Bitcoin uses approximately 8000 times more energy to power the network"

That would be about 0.013 percent the energy consumption of BTC if the calculation is right! Additionally, no extra mining hardware has to be produced, which adds to the ecological footprint.

I really think we should immediately drop Bitcoins and bitcoin mining and go for a better future...

I've spent some time going through the paper, and I find some of the assumptions on energy consumption for NXT to be a little optimistic, which is why I'm being cautious in quoting it's findings. My 'less than 1%' is definitely an understatement, but I'd rather be cautious on claims like this.

Any way you look at it, NXT is massively more energy efficient that BTC or any other PoW currency.

596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which is the most environmentally friendly, energy-efficient altcoin? on: March 10, 2015, 09:14:06 AM
Yup, it is entirely possible that a de-centralised system will consume more energy than the equivalent centralised system.
De-centralisation requires more redundancy and excess system capacity than the equivalent completely centralised system.

Paper wallets are useful, but you have to remember that the function of both BTC 'Proof of Work' mining and NXT 'Proof of Stake' forging is to secure their respective networks,  validate transactions and create their blockchains......without miners or forgers, no crypto-currency can function.

Thinking about 'green' coins: it's a pity that environmentalist thinking is seen as 'left', I'm of the opinion that as we all have to live on a fragile mudball floating in an unfriendly universe, we should really look after the mudball as well as we can. It's in our own best interests as a species.....really.

The main claim that NXT (and other PoS coins) can make for being environmentally friendly is their energy efficiency. Without the need for energy intensive PoW mining calculations, PoS systems use massively less power. The NXT paper posted above came up with figures that suggest that NXT uses less than 1% of the power needed to run BTC, assuming both currencies had the same transaction volumes.
597  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which is the most environmentally friendly, energy-efficient altcoin? on: March 09, 2015, 10:25:18 PM
NXT out of these. It is also the most transparent and advanced one.

OK, I lack the knowledge to verify if this is "the best" and only one. Then the other characteristics would come into the equation next (e.g. some kind of "fairness", which perhaps includes no premining etc.).

What would be the possibilities to make it even better? Just even better algorithms and personal user hardware or any other tricks?

nxt had one of the most unfair distributions in the history of mankind. so 'fairness' is not one of that coins strong suits.

Yeah, distributed by advertising for investors over a period of 2 months on this forum, so that 73 ordinary BTT users/crypto investors got in on the ground floor.
No-one was whining about unfair distribution the day before the NXT blockchain went live, but as soon as it's successful.........the distribution becomes 'unfair'
I wasn't one of the lucky 73, but I'm certainly not going to bitch them up out of jealousy and butthurt because I wasn't lucky/smart enough to be one of them.

NXT has amazing tech, and is still a good-looking investment. Never forget that all of crypto is pretty much experimental right now.
If you guys have any NXT you don't want...send 'em my way.

Getting back to somewhere on-topic, there's a paper on NXT energy efficiency as compared to Bitcoin:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J8uhdshu9epGRrQHBaloGc4itdvuAHZDAUtNDjOhz-8/edit?pli=1

and I suggest that the OP takes an in depth look at how the Proof of Work and Proof of Stake systems work, especially in terms of energy use.

598  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [FIBRE] | 625k | FibreDark | FibreLock | FibreGateway | ZeroTrust coming soon on: March 09, 2015, 07:39:15 PM
Find out for yourself, come join the rest of the SuperNET community in slack by sending a request to info@supernet.org. Supernetradio.com will be interviewing Fibre Dev this week.. stay tuned

I highly recommend those of you who love fibre (as I do) and who have never played with the NXT ecosystem (of which SuperNET is a part) download one of the NXT wallets and check it out.  I have yet to meet a person who has tried NXT tech and not been immensely impressed.  Join the superNET slack as killa said and lurk there, see the amazing amount of development that goes on daily and the COOPERATION between all these devs and communities and  you will be amazed.

When the full supernet multicoin wallet is out and we can hold our fibre in it, trade fibre, NXT assets, and other coins (even non supernet coins) on a decentralized exchange IN WALLET, and even go from coin to fiat and back via IN WALLET - the price of everything involved is going to explode.  The rest of crypto is about realize it has been left behind.  SuperNET and the coins involved in it is the best project in crypto 2.0 - and no one even knows because its totally under the radar.  No hype, just tech.  The marketing will come after the tech is released and solid, and the price will skyrocket.

Be a part of it, I'm not telling you to buy some, just join the slack and look at the immense community there.  It's a far cry from the us vs them shit we are so used to on these forums.

+1 to all of the above. SuperNET (and NXT) has always worked on the principle of getting the tech right first, before the marketing.
So, yeah, people should check out the SuperNET, and use it. You don't have to invest a massive amount of cash......

Wecome to the Fibre community, btw.......onwards and upwards.
599  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NFDv2] - NFD Coin - Current version NFD-1.3.6 - NEW NFD-AT testnet on: March 09, 2015, 01:12:13 AM
I've exchanged my coins. I don't think NFD will have a chance without the capable dev team..

Yup......I'm impressed by the work put in by MaWo, NxtBlg and others to rescue NFD in its darkest hour and actually get it up and running, and I trust them to make the right decisions for NFD.
So, even though I am not very happy about the current direction of Horizon, I think the option to merge NFD in to HZ is reasonable, so I'm going to redeem my NFD for HZ.

+1 to inBitweTrust......a quick browse thru all of that leads to only one conclusion: Paycoin is either a deliberate scam or a complete clusterfuck.
Same inevitable result either way.....I don't see how XPY holders can keep on sticking their heads in the sand for much longer.  Sad
