741  Economy / Games and rounds / 🏏 🏏 BitcoinTalk's Cricket Pool | 0.005 BTC to join | Pot 0.05 BTC 🏏 🏏 on: August 09, 2018, 08:20:47 PM

This Pool is a direct inspiration from hilariousandco's Bitcointalk's English Premier league pool. I am looking for only 10 people to join for the first month to kick things off. As the Caribbean Premier League has launched yesterday. I believe this is the best time to start things off.

The entry fee is 0.005 BTC, The Pot will become 0.05 BTC once the 10 members have joined. If I manage to get a sponsor the pot will only go up. Prize distribution will be as follow.

1st prize 0.02 BTC.
2nd prize 0.015 BTC.
3rd prize 0.0075 BTC.
4th prize 0.005 BTC.
5th Prize 0.0025 BTC.

The Pool rounds will last 30 days each.

How will the things work?
I will create a post in the Games & round section. I will post upcoming games each day. You guys can place your predictions in the following format there.

Code:
Game: RSA vs Srilanka
Toss: RSA to Win. (10 points)
Win: RSA (10 points)
Runs: By 50 runs (10 points).
Wickets: By 4 wickets (10 points).

A margin of +/- 20 Runs will be applied. So E.g South Africa scored 280 runs and Srilanka got all out on 220 runs. That means South Africa won by a margin of 70 runs. You will be credited 10 points for being in range. 50+20 = 70 runs.

A margin of +/- 2 wickets will be applied too.

To join the pool, Send 0.005 BTC to this address: 3EWG3btpyRsWYTA6QJXhZSWmf6LhPGcNi9

Once the 10 Members have joined, We will kick the things officially. This thread can be used for Banter/Discussions. I will create a spreadsheet of scores and post its link here. It will be updated after each game.

I will be the first one to join this. 9 Spots remaining.

This thread surprises me. Went through 7 pages of it and hardly found 5 members who met the merit requirement. Of which 3 were rewarded by the system since they were on their way to becoming legendary. Except for 2 accounts who have actually earned their merit with quality posts. Zapo are you considering users who are below the required merit? Do you have a reduced Pay per post for them? Or will you reject them straight away?
744  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is our assurance that Bitcoin will stay for long or forever? on: August 07, 2018, 06:26:31 PM
What is our assurance that Bitcoin will stay for long or forever?  There is a prophesy I have heard that Bitcoin will fall.
Can you share some strong reasons of why Bitcoin will last?

The Free and Open Internet is your assurance. As long as it will remain free and open to everyone. Bitcoin will last. Nothing can top this. The moment the internet will go down bitcoin will go down with it. Also, what are these prophesies? mind mentioning them or linking them here?

it's very easy to report 1000 posts on the altcoin boards. Even if you do it without reading, at least 95% is spam so you'll hit 95% accuracy.
Reports like that aren't useful, the Mod could just as well go through a random altcoin thread on his own.

Exactly. It's a terrible way to incentivize patrolling. A ranking system would cut just fine.

Quote
Let me put it this way: I report spammers for free

That's the spirit. Cheesy

Quote
this will increase the race of reporting. It may also increase the spamming more and more. Spammer will make alternative/duplicate account for doing spam and report those from their other account for earning.
If you want to give some type of benefits ,then provide them some type bandage/sign(that is going on) in their profile according to the reporting and accuracy.

You got it all wrong. Only members above Senior rank will have the ability to approve the posts. I don't agree with digaran to reward patrollers in any way. We are only talking about shadowbanning newbies and allow patrollers to approve their posts.

No.  They are well aware that Issa still walks among them.

No, let me enlighten you the chosen one. It's not Issa who is believed to walk among them, It's actually a figure named "Al khidr". He supposedly found the fountain of youth and drank from it. I bet you can ask your "god" about him more. But my Wikipedia will surely give your "god" a run for his "wisdom". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khidr

Also, Muslims don't believe in Jesus (Esa, Issa) being dead, Instead they believe that he was lifted to the skies and will return before the end of times. He will return on "Dome of Rock" and will start a caliphate against the anti-christ. I would recommend you to start using Google and stop listening to what your "god" is saying to you. he is making a fool out of you on the forefront platform of the human invention.

550$ is also less than a average rent rate for a studio flat in the US. Also theymos doesn't care a lot about money, he could actually increase the salary/wage of the staff. Mods deserve more than just 500-1000$ per month.

I didn't mean that they were getting paid less. If you are moderating something, you must have an interest in it and even have the will to do it without any incentives.

Quote
Patrollers are enough for now I guess, reports are usually handled quickly. Some staff might be required in un modded boards. Otherwise for now we are good.

Do you really think we are good? Just visit the Bitcoin discussion section. Almost every other topic is started by a newbie and on most occasions, its a duplicate thread of 10 other threads which were literally the same thing. I agree with hilariousetc We need shadowbanning in some sections.

If you're on forum staff then you will get paid. It's wouldn't be anywhere near a full time wage but a very active patroller can expect around $550. theymos is also thinking about badges as a reward for high reporters though.

That can be the end goal for the Patrollers, Just like I suggested after a specific amount of approvals/reports theymos should consider them adding on the forum staff. This will serve as a monetary incentive they could have one day. Talking about $550 it's still more than any campaign except for chip mixer and I imagine the campaign rates will only go down further. Also, 550$ is still more than a salary of a teacher in Developing countries so that's that.

If every campaign had a decent manager who was checking for quality then we wouldn't have this issue in the first place, and that's why I'm all for punishments for those that run spam campaigns.

It won't serve any purpose IMO. There is nothing stopping these farmers to create a new account and start managing the campaigns from a newbie account. Since this is a private forum, I am all in for charging these ICOs to post their campaigns and posts. This should at least remove all the crapy 1 person scam ICOs.

Quote
Something needs to change with the culture of bounties here or spammers are going to be the only people posting here soon enough

THIS!!! To be honest I am tired of seeing all these useless topics being created by newbies which add literally no value to this forum. I have given up building my ignore list it's just not worth it. These new accounts keep popping up and just keep ruining my experience on bitcointalk. I have altogether left visiting some sections of the forum.

We need heavy moderation, especially on the newbies. Something like we discussed in the patrol thread.
751  Other / Meta / Re: Are patrollers still a thing? on: August 06, 2018, 04:03:55 PM
It won't be an inconvenience at all IMO. Imagine 20-30 users patrolling at all times. Their posts would get approved in minutes instead of hours which isn't the case with other forums.
If I look at patrol, I'd reject (almost) all of them. I've never been able to read that page long enough to find a post worth meriting, I usually give up when I find one worth banning.
There are enough Newbie posts to fill several full-time jobs, working in shifts around the clock. I don't think that's something anyone would want to do for long.

Reward the process it's that simple. Not by BTCs or tokens. Just introduce a ranking system. I would do it all day long if you ask me...  Grin

I've previously suggested something like this. What I proposed is that all new users are essentially shadow-banned until a staff member checks their posts and either approves and white-lists them if they're fine or nuke them if they're a bot or whatever. Genuine users will be none the wiser as to them their posts would still show up but wouldn't publicly until they've been approved which shouldn't take long. It would stop spambots from being an eyesore as they would never appear and the people who just sign up just to write exclusively 'good project' etc can be nuked on sight instead of cluttering up the ICO threads with pure spam.

This just hits the nail on its head! I couldn't agree more. Sent some merit your way.

It is effective against spambots and only a minor inconvenience to genuine users.

It won't be an inconvenience at all IMO. Imagine 20-30 users patrolling at all times. Their posts would get approved in minutes instead of hours which isn't the case with other forums.

Newbie jail is entirely different to what is being asked here, and newbie jail is never coming back:

Limiting newbie participation is very harmful for a community. Newbie jail will never return: I consider the newbie-jail period to have been extremely damaging to the forum. When barriers to participation are too high, then the best people often just won't go to the trouble of joining, and the people who are willing to jump through the hoops are often people who aren't good for the community: people with nothing better to do, scammers, get-rick-quickers, etc. Having a permanent newbie jail policy would improve things a lot in the short-term, but would end up being a fatal poison to the community.

The low signal-to-noise is a real issue which seriously annoys me and is often on my mind. But as you mention, fixing it non-destructively is difficult.

Hmm, interesting. I dunno know if this has been suggested before or not. What about a system for approving new threads? Any new thread from a newbie should be approved by either a moderator or a Patroller. I believe this might be a "non-destructive" way to achieve the goal of fighting spam. From what I have in mind is to introduce a "merit" like system for patrollers. Patrollers who are above senior rank will be able to approve the new threads. If the topic already exists they could simply send a message with a link to that topic to the user who created the new thread and they will be rewarded by patrolling points. A user who has successfully earned 20,000 patrol points could become a moderator or could earn a special rank.

This idea literally came to me when I saw the thread. A ranking system for patrollers could be introduced just to make the job more interesting for them. Would love to hear community's opinion on this.

First of all, I want to apologize for the late reply. I am on vacation since some days ago, so I currently have a very limited and unstable internet connection. I was able to log in and saw your message a couple of days ago, but I wasn't able to reply until today.

You should probably hire someone here to manage your thread then. It's harmful to your business.

About the Coinflip game: it's a simple game with only 2 possible variables: Heads or Tails. In the MD5 pre-hash you will see a "0" or a "1" at the end, the "0" stands for Heads and the "1" stands for Tails (or viceversa, I don't really remember right now and I can't log in to check currently). So the game randomly picks one of those, it doesn't select a number between 0 and 100 or something like that.

There are still ways to achieve a 0 or a 1, Just take this is as an example. Anything less than 50 that means the number will be 0, or anything above 50 will be a 1. So Unless you are willing to show your scripts which are on the live server to each user. There still will be a doubt.

Quote
Even if we consider what you suggested (the example of choosing a random number between 0 and 80), the harm would be for us, not the user. If I were playing the game and I notice that I'm getting way more Tails than Heads after hours playing, I would start to bet only on Tails.

I haven't checked the numbers, but a 62.5% chance of winning (according to your example/numbers) and a payout of 197% would make the house edge negative, letting the user always win in the long run. And then more and more users could notice the same, harming us even more.

True, but you are making way more than your negative house edge from a player who bets on heads in this case. A payout of 265% should be awarded to the player but is only getting a 197% return. Which means a 68% less Return for the player. Whereas for the negative house edge. They deserve a payout of 158% instead they are getting a 197% return. A loss of 39% for your casino. But If you subtract the two differences. You are still making a healthy profit of 21% in the long run.

The point is you need to move your entire system to client + seed + nounce so that nothing is hidden and there is no doubt in users mind. The only issue I have with md5 hashing is that we have to trust "you" that nothing shady is going on behind the scene. Also, I believe it is one of the reasons why whales might stay away from your casino.

I've just started this thread about using a Teamspeak server to help new members to post. I'd be interested in some comments from senior members about the idea.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4822344.0

I like the idea and the effort you have been putting in to prevent spam But Jet cash let's be honest for a moment. Do you really think these account farmers/spammers really care about their English? I think you know the answer to my question. There are literally countless free sources available across the web to learn English from. If these people were willing to put the hard work in they would have used them. What makes you think they will use this service instead of 1000s of other solutions out there? IMO this is just a waste of resources which can be spent elsewhere.

Hey guys!

I'm exploring options for investing in Bitcoin and I'm new to the whole space.
What would you recommend to do?

I wouldn't recommend investing straight away. Learn more about bitcoin first and when you feel like you have got a good grasp of the technology, Then head over to localbitcoins.com or coinbase if your country is supported for buying BTCs. You can find the list here

Also if you are looking for venues to invest your bitcoin in. Don't invest in anything which offers a Percentage return over a certain period of time. They are most likely to end up scamming you. Also, Stay away from cloud mining websites. The only thing I can recommend you is to lend your BTCs with a valid collateral to trusted members here and make some ROI by charging some interest.

@Cody Blare @ShutterTeeth you both have been marked for promoting a Ponzi.

A little surprising as a turn of events, given how progressive the Netherlands has always been with Bitcoin, upholding several court cases and deeming them a legal means of exchange.

I've seen a lot of statements from central banks from all over the world. Their logic can be explained by the fact that they are hardcore mainstream economists who were taught that it's their duty to protect the market from all sorts of risks and disasters with their regulations. They were also taught that fiat money is a superior system to historical systems like gold coins, barter, spontaneous money and banknotes backed by gold. So, in their eyes Bitcoin is a move back to unregulated money, which they believe is dangerous.

This just hits the nail on its head.
760  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-08-03] Bitcoin & Cryptos Not Real Money - Dutch Central Bank on: August 03, 2018, 04:30:30 PM
From the article:

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not considered money by the Dutch Central Bank, though there are no plans to impose a ban on them while consumer protection remains the main concern of the government.
