Impeached Trump.
Hmm..."Accomplishments..." hmm...

I'll have to subpoena on that.

Seriously...you must have something...some kind deed to a stray puppy?

Arrested on a boat... like a bad Hollywood cliche. Wasn't Bannon a film producer at some point or am I mixing him up with some other sketchy trumpster?
What's wrong with pulling a Lenny Bruce? Or maybe they've changed the laws and tightened the loopholes.

Charities can be scammy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Bruce

Bruce's desire to help his wife cease working as a stripper led him to pursue schemes that were designed to make as much money as possible. The most notable was the Brother Mathias Foundation scam, which resulted in Bruce's arrest in Miami, Florida, in 1951 for impersonating a priest. He had been soliciting donations for a leper colony in British Guiana (now Guyana) under the auspices of the "Brother Mathias Foundation", which he had legally chartered—the name was his own invention, but possibly referred to the actual Brother Matthias who had befriended Babe Ruth at the Baltimore orphanage to which Ruth had been confined as a child.[38]
Bruce had stolen several priests' clergy shirts and a clerical collar while posing as a laundry man. He was found not guilty because of the legality of the New York state-chartered foundation, the actual existence of the Guiana leper colony, and the inability of the local clergy to expose him as an impostor. Later, in his semifictional autobiography How to Talk Dirty and Influence People, Bruce said that he had made about $8,000 in three weeks, sending $2,500 to the leper colony and keeping the rest.

Would be fair to include that they successfully blocked the removal of Obamacare / The Affordable Care Act.

While it wasn't something that they directly did with their votes, as they didn't have enough votes in the Senate / House to block the bill themselves -- though they DID keep their caucus united under the banner of ObamaCare. Every single Dem voted to stop the Republicans from moving it. They launched a pretty successful PR campaign telling people that ACA was needed.

Then everyone saw McCain come out and give the thumbs-down, effectively ending the chance the GOP had to remove ACA.

I admit to not really understanding the current status of Obamacare.

Here is an interesting survey.

Yet, only 36% of voters are aware that the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Individual Mandate was recently repealed by Republicans (46% of voters incorrectly believe it is still in effect, and 18% of voters do not know). As a refresher, the Individual Mandate was the requirement under the ACA (also know as Obamacare) that individuals must sign up for health insurance or face a tax penalty. The Mandate was repealed last month by Republicans as part of their tax reform bill, and it takes full effect in 2019.

Even among those voters who are directly affected by the repeal of the Individual Mandate — those who are uninsured or buy health insurance in the individual market — awareness of change is alarmingly low: a staggering 44% incorrectly believe the requirement is still in place and another 19% don’t know.

What is even more shocking is that 17% of voters believe that the ACA has been repealed in its entirety (not just the Mandate). This, of course, is incorrect.

Here is the source. It is more than 2 years old...

Back to the subject though: It is a pretty fair point to bring up the fact that rich people continue to buy up oceanfront homes while preaching about how all of that is going to be underwater soon.

A fair criticism to that line of thought is -- well yes, soon could mean 100-200 years though and no one buying a home is going to care about that sort of timeline if they just want to enjoy it.

The Maldives is a pretty unusual geological formation, containing almost 1200 islands or "mini-islands."

It's considered relatively safe from tsunamis but got hit hard in the 2004 tsunami, 3-5 meter water height. Water swept right over most everything.

http://factsanddetails.com/asian/cat63/sub411/item2541.html

Looks like the main business is tourism, and that's largely scuba diving.

This island nation doesn't need a world wide crash green program to lower the sea water levels, they just need good engineering and building design. But unlike most places, they really seriously need that.

Here's the tsunami.

I did unintentionally misrepresent one thing though - I claimed the report said Kilimnik 'likely' was involved with the DNC hack and leak, the report actually says 'The Committee obtained some information suggesting Kilimnik may have been connected to the GRU's hack and leak operation targeting the 2016 U.S. election.'  My bad.
...

The "may" is not "was". The result of the bolded section would be "no evidence that Kilimnik was connected...".

Reading too much into something, and converting "may" into a certainty, isn't real.

los angeles has been on the brink for many years
its not longer known as 'hollywood' because for decades now other states have been offering many businesses better tax deals if they move

many tv shows for the last 2 decades have been running from canada, chigaco, newyork
hardly any tv shows are produced in LA now....

But it's getting cheaper and cheaper to live in LA.

Which downtown street corner would you like to pitch your tent on?

Oh I understand the portion regarding the fact that removing US bases in the world removes the influence of the US, and then in turn the US would be unable to control economies of other nations through the influence they wield. But that is still something that Trump did promise to do.

Most Americans agree with the line of thinking "why do we spend so much on a military abroad when we have so many issues here" which is what Trump tapped into.

Trump also did promise to end the foreign wars (some of them at least) and to bring the soldiers home. Hasn't happened, and in some regards he has even increased the amount of soldiers there. Obama did the same sort of thing -- though he did pull some troops out. Though nothing like what he had promised to do.

We really, really don't need bases in Japan or Germany to "influence them" or "control economies." On the other hand, I can see areas where at least today, the world is perhaps a better place if we have bases there. But these things shift and change, at least over timeframes like decadal.

It wouldn't surprise me if various bases remain in place today that were based on geopolitical strategy of a hundred years ago.

I mean we probably don't need bases in these areas, but not all of the bases are used for the purpose that I spoke of before. The bases in Japan are used as an anti china and anti north korea more then controlling Japan. If I knew geography I'd tell you some places that Germany is used strategically before, but ugh -- I've got nothing off the top of my head right now.

Even in some of our most cemented allies we can use bases for leverage. Imagine an area where the local workforce relies HEAVILY on the US base existing in the area (and receiving proper funding and such) -- that politican could be used as a tool to ensure that US interests are kept in the minds of policy makers.

The ONLY valid reason for overseas US bases, is stopping military threats. US troops in NK are an example. But then you have to provide supply, logistics bases pretty much everywhere. But that changes with time and technology.

Withdrew from NATO
This is false. The US has not withdrawn from NATO, in fact we provided military assistance to our NATO allies upon their request in the spring to help combat the coronavirus when their hospitals were being overrun.
Trump has however gotten our NATO allies to pay for something closer to the amounts they have promised to pay...
So a totally unfair situation was corrected. Unless you always want to pick up the tab when you go out with friends. I'm not seeing even how to make that into an anti-Trump joke...

Withdrew from NATO

It's a list of things Trump didn't do.  Everything on the list is 'false'.

We're not doing a list of things that didn't/haven't happened.

....EG america wanting to go to war with the middle east over oil. oil has no brain. but america want it and will go to war if the middle east dont hand it over. oil has no motives. but america make peace deals where america wins the oil and the middle east suffer and can be harmed unless they just give up their oil....

That was never true, as oil is a fungible resource. Economics 101. And the US never takes the product of a country's output.

Regardless, fracking has made the US energy independent, so these international dynamics have seriously changed.

I think all of this is just going to end with colleges and schools closing up again for the semester / half year.

Since the covid didn't stop with the heat of summer, there is little reason to expect a winter resurge. (eg it's physically resistant to the temperature sensitivity shown by virus that emerges in the winter "flu season."

I'm finding it a bit difficult to worry about these people losing their investment due to random climate variations. They are literally building and selling without such concerns. Now, why should we care?

ur argument that people buying luxury homes in maldives is evidence that scientists are wrong about the country being at risk of disappearing 80 years from now is beyond stupid

when u build a house without a foundation exposed to the ocean you are really lucky if u get 15 or 20 years out of it

obv an incel like u wouldnt care about future generations since reproducing isnt an option but most ppl do give a shit that family is able to live a happy life after they are gone

You miss the entire point. THEY'RE BUILDING! They are building with whatever level foundation they think is adequate. If what they are doing is inadequate, that's their own "beyond stupid" not ours.

And people are buying what they build. At extremely high prices. A 1 bedroom condo... 3.5M...

Obviously the dictator strong-man running things there doesn't care enough to force the regulations to require 15' of dirt above sea level. Note the dirt is free, just scoop it from the ocean.

Now why is their negligence your and my problem ?

Got Mexico to pay for the wall
Replaced Obamacare with a much better healthcare system
Put Hillary in prison
Brought coal mining back
Deported all illegal immigrants
Balanced the budget
Released his tax returns after the audit
Withdrew from NATO
Reinstated waterboarding for interrogation
Made America great again

I feel like I'm reading (or in) a graphic novel. It's probably the same one where THE WALL has a Trumpian hotel with Casino every 300 miles.

Okay so "imminent danger of the island going under in decades" doesn't translate into lower real estate values?

How about you explain why ten inches higher water would erase the Maldives "in decades"? Your words, not mine.

People are short sighted that's why.

Where I live a bridge that was just being repaired admitedly didn't even take into account sea level rise. Everyone just went along with it because it would be too much work, apparently.

While I personally believe in less conservative climate change scenarios, If we take the US assessment it's between 1 and 4.3 feet. Many potential IPCC models put the mean change in 1.05 all the way up to 1.56 meter range. (5.11 feet max) for the year 2100. ....

We're not, though. We're capturing Twitch in one of his lies.

He said "decades".

I'm making fun of it.

Me, personally? I believe in the Three Little Piggies story's lesson about where and how to build houses.

fuck twitchyseal for telling people that we are decades away from the year 2100  what a scammer he is

good job spendulus finding that house that cost 10000000 finally we have proof that science is wrong and u are right

how did you get so smart?

Looking a bit further, it seems that $5M will buy you a tiny island, double that for an island with a house. But what you are buying is a 50 year LEASE from the government. You cannot own it. If the 50 year lease was previously executed, then from that person you could buy the remainder of the lease.

I'm finding it a bit difficult to worry about these people losing their investment due to random climate variations. They are literally building and selling without such concerns. Now, why should we care?

If you don't want people to know you're just a shit poster you shouldn't switch back and forth so quickly between being an educated witty pragmatic guy that knows more than everyone else and then suddenly a curious idiot that doesn't know how to use google.

That's a valid criticism.
759  Other / Politics & Society / Re: UAE and Israel FULLY Normalise Relations - The Abraham Accord on: August 19, 2020, 04:16:18 PM
You may not know but this decision by the UAE is one of the worse events that has happened in 2020. I'm sure if someone will make a list of a tragedy that happened in 2020 this one will be on the list. I mean, those 2 countries are don't suppose to do these kinds of stuffs because Palestine the country who always bullied by Israel is one the UAE's concerns or I may see that was all history now. Something must be going on here, I mean they might have some under the table agreement which leads into this kind of relations.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/08/world-reacted-uae-israel-normalising-diplomatic-ties-200813152921879.html

I'm very interested in the way the Arab world reacts to this event. On the one hand, there is a history of problems between Israel and the Arab nations.

On the other, the shape of relations between the entire Arab world and Israel cannot be dominated by the Palestinian issue.

It's either a bizarre anomaly or the result of some active and strategic plan of Trump. America has started no wars or conflicts during his first term. If this continues, it will be something that historians will study intently.

No doubt a good part of the Trump-hate is fostered by those many vested interests that profit from the US use of force internationally.
