I have also leased a 2500 square foot office space / store front which I am in the process of moving into and will be hiring full time employees to help when the bASIC units ship out, their duties will include  opening up boxes from the assembly house - loading firmware - testing for 24 hours - boxing them back up and shipping them out to customers.

I assume you will be using testnet-in-a-box, or something other than the main net for testing, yes?
1822  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC power consumption estimates on: October 01, 2012, 06:59:15 PM
You (and Tom) are dreaming if you think it's going to run at 60w.  The reason he doesn't want to post his power specs is because he knows they are going to be high.

Why is it attainable for your company but only dream-able for others?

Because BFL is using a 65nm process and Tom is using 130nm? That's a 4x difference in power use right there.

Actually, I'm not sure what Tom is using. Maybe I'm thinking of Avalon. Anyone know for sure?

3, this ASIC will manufacture by SMIC or TSMC.  0.11 or 0.13 process.

There the Avalon feature size has been stated.  I don't think I have seen either BFL or Tom/cablepair mention their process feature size.

Maybe it's because they are producing a Full Custom ASIC where the others use Standard Cell designs:

at 0.48  "full-custom asics, etc

By the way, BFL doesn't use the phrase "full custom" to mean the same thing it means in the industry.

We don't?  Please elaborate. (I'm serious, I'm not being snarky.  If we/I am using it incorrectly, then I would like to use the proper term.)

Standard-cell ASICs and synthesis-flow ASICs are not considered full-custom chips.

The phrase "fully custom" is a BFL-ism that sounds a lot like "truthiness" Smiley  In fact the third google hit for "fully custom asic" on the entire interweb is BFL which ought to be a hint that it is a contortion of the usual industry terminology...

Of course that assumes they're being on the level with all of these statements.

Anyways  thanks for the input and if anyone has any ideas in this regard please share them - I am actively looking for ways to offer buybacks/rebate/upgrade path for current BTCFPGA ModMiner owners.

thanks!

How about a scrypt firmware - could be sold in that market.

I understand that scrypt requires a good bit of memory with a fast connection to the processor.  These FPGA miners do not have that, so I think we are unlikely to see a scrypt bitstream for them.

I AM GIVING AWAY A FREE MODMINER QUAD 840Mh/s FPGA MINING DEVICE EVERY SINGLE WEEK IN OCTOBER!

(Q) What do I have to do to win a Free ModMiner Quad 840Mh/s FPGA Mining Device?

(A) You must change your signature title ...

I must say, I'm disappointed.  I was not real surprised to see BFL doing this, but I had thought you were above this sort of thing.

Did you really have to use a large bold font with colors, on 4 lines?  It's way more prominent than the message body.

Do you really think that anyone who is serious enough to plop down $599 for an asic miner is not already aware of all of the product offerings, and will be swayed by seeing a signature ad?

I am giving away over $4000.00 in FPGA bitcoin mining hardware just for changing someone's signature. I think thats pretty generous.

Also it is within the forum guidelines of allowable signatures and breaks no current forum rule or regulation.

I had to do something to at least attempt to level the advertising playing field.

That is generous.  As much as I would like to enter the contest, my signature space is not for sale.

I suppose I can understand the reasoning.  I mostly didn't like the "spammy" look/feel of it, and I generally object to "someone else does it" justifications.

If that disappoints you - than I am very sorry. If you currently have an order with us and would like a refund due to my advertising policies than please let me know your order # and I will refund your money immediately

Indeed I do have an order for a bASIC product, and I won't be canceling it over this.

In most areas your business practices appear to be a good head and shoulders above those I have seen BFL display.  I didn't like the idea of their paid signature ads, and didn't like to see you doing the same.

I can understand that business is business, and advertising does pay.  Especially now having heard the story of missing out on the forum ad slots, I can understand the move more.

I apologize for the harsh tone I took.  I'm sure it's stressful being in your position.  Don't let the trolls bring you down.  I'll try not to be one.
1826  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / MPBM AJAX memory leak? on: October 01, 2012, 02:37:47 PM
Hi, I hope this is a good place for bug reporting.

I have been using MPBM for a few days now, cloned from github on 26-September.

Over the weekend I left it running, and left the Safari window open with the WebUI running.

When I returned today, it was running real chunky, and Safari was using several gigs of memory.  Upon closing the MPBM tab, the memory was freed and things returned to normal.

I think the AJAX code is leaking memory.  Here is a screenshot of the Activity window after it has been running for a few minutes:

I think either the getallstats responses, or /api/log/stream (or both) are continuing to accumulate in browser memory for as long as the tab remains open.

Sorry I didn't capture the Activity window before closing the tab earlier.

Let me know if I can do anything more to help debug this.

It just amazes me to see BFL claiming to have reached 1J/GH. If it were April 1st I would be assured it's a joke. I simply don't understand how they could push that technology so hard in such a limited amount of time, and competitors don't get even close to it.

Im a little unsure, but before if they have been som problems uploading fw, the classic poweroff all pull usb-cables have allways worked and I had that error so few times so Im not sure if its the same errorcode.

I have made numerous restarts and changed cables and so on, I have also reprogrammed a couple of times and tried.
Anyone ?

How are you powering the board?  Have you tried a different PS and/or power cable?

Dear *@*,
My name is Yifu Guo...

Those who managed to make it into the first-wave. If you chosen bitcoin as your payment method and have yet to receive an email, confirming or requesting to confirm your payment please contact me immediately. I’ll be manually checking over the orders to make sure everything is spot on before moving on to those who chosen wire transfer, sit tight we'll get to you.

I also received this email.

Having placed an order, I only ever received an email confirming my shipping details, product ordered, and payment method (bitcoin).  I paid to the bitcoin address shown on the website, but never received an email confirming payment.

Now when I try to reply to the email, my email bounces:

1831  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC power consumption estimates on: September 30, 2012, 07:07:10 PM
Having already ordered a jalapeno, I'd say im pretty happy that the power usage will be so low. If I can run this straight from the usb ports on my raspberry pi, I will be very happy.

If these generate a considerable amount of heat, I might even use it to warm my little sisters hermit crab tank, and heaters like that use around the same amount of power.

Most heat generated in electric appliances, electronics and computer gear is caused by inefficient use of electricity.  For example a 100 Watt bulb is drawing 100 watts, but not all 100 watts is going into the creation of light, a lot of it is wasted in heat, and that's why the bulbs get so hot.

I'm guessing the ASIC's must be pretty efficient, but even if you look at the worst case of 100% heat loss, you're only look at a 4.5 watt or 60 watt heater.  I'd be shocked if even the SC puts off more heat than a single GPU, and even then, that's a stretch.

Either way I don't need that much heat! Although I forget that it wont give off 100% heat, haha
It will give off 100% of the energy it uses as heat.
It might have a light on it!

I wonder if it will be more profitable to order the 27Gh/s model as there will be a longer line for the 54Gh/s one due to existing preorders.

<pure speculation>
I suspect they are composed of the same underlying components.  Tom indicated earlier it wasn't one chip driving it, there are multiples.  As in 27 would be 3x9, and 54 would be 3x18.  Therefore if there's a shortage of one, there's a shortage of the other.
</pure speculation>

M

The more expensive model was offered for sale for ~ a month before a lesser model was offered.

Are they really going to build and ship all of those orders without building or shipping any of the "lite" model in that time?

I suppose it's possible.

I wonder how long the order line is by now.  If I ordered one today, how many weeks after the first shipment went out would it be until it shipped?

I'd love to see an order tracking thread started like exists for a competing asic product.  I would start one myself, but I don't want to maintain it...

The creator of the bet gets 5% of the losing bets no matter the outcome, so it's in the creator's interest to promote the bet.

1836  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC group buying on: September 28, 2012, 05:51:57 PM
It's not really a Group Buy if the seller is asked to ship each order individually to each group member's address.  The point of giving priority or discounts to large orders is to sell more units with a lowered customer-service overhead.
1837  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: "Avalon" ASIC, announcement & pre-order. VERY important notice updated@9/24 on: September 27, 2012, 07:20:14 PM
Would these ship with the full purchase price declared on the CN22?

I routinely order a ton of stuff from Asia, and 90+% of it arrives with a much lower value declared, and/or declared as a gift.  So much so that I have never once been assessed a duty fee despite hundreds of orders, some of them for over $1000 USD.

Some places even state their practice right in their shipping policy.  For instance:

1838  Other / Off-topic / Re: "Frist Look at BFL's ASIC Hardware" on: September 25, 2012, 11:53:21 PM
of course if the yeild is so high they use full speed capable chips in the Jally, then those lucky people could up-clock it back to 5Gh/s.

I'm thinking though, rather then down-clock, they might disable hash-cores. (my thinking is the chip will work by having 1000's of individual hashing cores working simultaneosly)

Consider that a 5850 is a 5870 with one of its 10 shader groups disabled.  A 5830 is the same with 3 groups disabled.  I think they may be clocked lower also.

AMD laser cuts the traces so there is no hope of "unlocking" them.
1839  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: So what is the consensus on how many 7970's can run on one rig ? on: September 25, 2012, 11:24:53 PM
I have a rig running 3 5970s, 1 5850, and 1 5830 for 8 GPUs total.  It runs Ubuntu 10.04.

Power supply is an Antec TPQ-1200.  No problems there.

When fully clocked up it draws ~1330W from the wall, and crunches ~2.66GHps.

After a year of operation, it cooked the +12V pins on the motherboard ATX connector:
http://imgur.com/a/htewn

Now I'm using "molex mod" PCIe extender cables so that won't happen again.   See:
