Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Avalon ASIC Batch #2 Sales Update

I too hastily opened a walletbit account and deposited 100 BTC so that I would have it in place to pay for an order should I be able to place one.
Now I see that only 99.11 BTC is reflected in my Dashboard balance.
WTF? Why should they charge me a fee to receive my funds? It's not like it costs them anything. This seems like a very shady thing to do. Imagine if a bank tried this! Talk about a bait and switch!
I think that walletbit was a poor choice as a payment processor on Avalon's part for the reason above. Also because the site fell over under load, and also because it asks one to "blindly" send payment to a bitcoin address, without generating an email, or even providing so much an an order ID, payment ID, or any other kind of token aside from the bitcoin address itself.
Boo. Walletbit--

Team Avalon, can we call this launch off already? It's been 2.5 hours now. I've got things to do out of the house.
Keep what orders came through, and schedule a new relaunch to sell the rest, at least 24h from now.
Thx.

If they count the number of units passed onto walletbit as part of their 600 I have 10 ordered and I'm sure somebody else must have at least 50 lol
Count 2 of me too paid after registering to the webite ans surfing smoothly Ok, after registering I was able to buy two units, see http://blockchain.info/tx-index/6b698d60124ca67f5b5d81643a0f5f65dab2c12b152f95bcc41f1f7d1c6be7e4Now, the walletbit page does not refresh nor I've received a mail... Let's hope I've not wasted 151 BTC... spiccioli I got far enough to get a payment address and QR and correct total from walletbit (as walletbit guest), but I was scared to to send the payment, as the page still had a "spinner" on it, and no order id or anything. I didn't get an email either. I signed up for a walletbit account now to be safer. Do I need to deposit BTC to that account now to pay with walletbit?

I gave up and sent the 4 USD for my original order. Maybe this will hold a spot?
If I remind batch 1, ppl paid after and then order not paid has been resold later, Hoping thi time is same, I didnt pay the 0.4 but my order was in first I hope its recorded for future payment. I hope bitsyncom you can update us about that Same. I entered my shipping info and made it to bitpay once, but it showed a $3 total so I didn't pay. I'm posting here in hopes of also securing a "place in line" based on this.

I cant even get it to add a unit to my cart, just spinning logo. :/
Same here, plus I have to reload the product page every time to get it to even show up. I've tried 2 different browsers, and a browser in a VM. This is worse than batch #1.

from the website
The no bullshit, no fine print terms of sale
We Accept Bitcoin Only – Bitcoin allow us to collect large sum of assets in a short period of time, and due their nature the bitcoins can also be move to where they are suppose to go in a similar time frame. We are aware this will introduce Import issues for certain EU and SA countries. Avalon ASIC hope re-sellers will take this opportunity to grow and take care of this problem.
No Refunds - The Avalon units are made on a built-to-order basis. This means when you place an order, your bitcoins are used to order parts to construct your Avalon Unit. Refunds therefore are impossible. Utilizing a short time frame, batch based, and built-to-order method allows to manage finances properly and reduce risk for all parties. e.g. Avalon ASIC, the re-sellers and the buyers.
Trade-Ins - Avalon will continue to honor our old customers providing trade-in programs of old generations units, FPGA, and in the future for first generation ASIC modules. The Trade-In Orders are not part of the 600 unit limitation existing in Batch #2. Im sure im not the only one confused about the exact meaning of the bolded as the OP says you will accept in this batch#2 preorder. this overtime term of sale smells like fine print c'mon. Im considering buying one or two and I hope you sell everthing but just say something and stick with that, changing rules in the last minute doesnt help. He's saying that in batch #2 they will sell 600 units to new customers, and will continue to make units in batch #2 available to trade-in customers even after 600 units have been ordered. I think.

A standalone, self-contained Bitcoin mining unit. It is literally plug-and-play; without the need for a separate hosting device.
Power Consumption: 450w
Clearly they're describing the entire device, not just the hashing modules. I agree that the specs rightly ought to describe the power consumption of the entire device.

The miner is currently running on an already loaded residential house power circuit, while sharing a Back UPS ES 550 with another desktop machine.
If I were you, I would plug it right into the grid, or into a UPS that outputs true sine wave AC. An APC Back UPS ES outputs nasty noisy square wave AC that isn't real good for things. I wouldn't run a computer on one myself, much less a rare and expensive ASIC miner. I also would not trust the power measurement taken by a kill-a-watt with it plugged in through that UPS.

I'm happy to announce my involvement with the 100TH Mine project, as hosting provider of choice! This is a great project - BitFury has the design doing simulations already and the project is on track for mining in the June/July timeframe. What I like about it is the price point - at $5/GHs, it amounts to 200GH/s for the same $1000. I think its a worthy place to put your hardware dollars, especially if you got aced out of bASIC, BFL or Avalon. For those of you who haven't checked out BitFury's FPGA project: http://www.bitfury.org/bitfury110.htmlOne thing to make very clear: this is not a reborn bASIC project, does not use Tom's chips, is not related in ANY way to bASIC. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140366.0So Dave has confirmed his involvement in an ASIC project no-one has heard of before which has nothing to do with bASIC, honest. Not fishy in the slightest. It's FPGAs, not ASICs. Dave's involvement is as a hosting provider. See the megabigpower.com thread. BitFury was around before anyone heard of bASIC. Sry you fail so much.

I thought it was a scam when no tracking number was provided. Avalon did everything a scammer would do right up to the point of telling us that they'd be opening up a second batch for sale, without proof of the first being shipped, available to order in Bitcoin only... They did all this when they could have provided so much more in terms of information and updates. I mean, could they not show some more pictures... video... mine for a little bit on a test pool... etc...?
It made no sense if they were legit, and huge sense if they were a scam.

lol
Why would anyone srs buy the steaming pile that's what remains of bASIC?
They say they have their own chips of a different design, so it wasn't for the chips.
There are no customers left, so it wasn't for that.
There are plenty of liabilities left, like a lot of BTC refunds needing to be paid out.
:head scratch:

Do ya think its really that time-critical? How long after they accepted orders was the 1st Batch sold out?
First batch was sold out for 20 mins max However there were some units available later, because some folks did not pay. A lot of the batch 1 units (60-70%) sold quickly, but not all. I think it may have even been 2 or 3 days until they all sold out. That's after they fixed the technical issues and had them available to order on a working site. Of course now that batch 1 is proven, interest may be stronger in #2.

Hmm still no source code link on the web page ...
jgazrik, can you rip the firmware from the unit? ssh in and 'cat /dev/mtd1 > mtd1', 'cat /dev/mtd2 > mtd2', etc until you have copies of all the mtds, then scp them down and post them on a file locker or something. Thanks.

Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is an 80% decrease in power consumption possibe when going from 110nm to 65nm?
|

dust got it right. If it was exactly the same chip one would expect closer to 2x to 3x better efficiency. A lot will depends on the exact design. Personally I think Avalon went the right route. Any ASIC is far superior to GPU so use 110nm, get a simple working design out the door. A couple million in sales later you got plenty of money to do an improved design maybe tweak out 50% to 100% improvement in efficiency, and THEN make a move to smaller process. Get the most out of your resources. Note this strategy is called tick-tock and is used by Intel.
Mm hmm. I used to work at a tech company for a boss who was famous within the company for his slogan "Ship it!". He'd say it, and we'd do it. We shipped some hacked-together shit, and boy it's a good thing we did. In retrospect, "ship it" was absolutely the right decision to have made every time. It was far better to get something out the door that halfway worked, and to fix it better later than to delay and have nothing out there while we tried and tried again for perfection. This went double for the confidence of our customers. They by far preferred to see us doing something and getting something into their hands, even if it was hacked. </tangent>
