I bid 5.25 BTC each for the 2 underperformers.
1162  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Radeon HD 5xxx reference design screw set on: March 25, 2013, 02:20:41 AM
:bump:

Now offering 0.1 BTC

I *might* have all the screws needed. I'll need to look thru my several cups of extra gpu parts.  I assume you won't need the cooler hold-down brace?

This is a list just off the top of my head.

4 screws for cooler hold-down brace
2 screws on bracket
8 larger head screws for backplate
3 smaller head screws for backplate
3 screws for fan

That sound about right?

That sounds right.  I don't need the bracket screws.

If you can get that set together, minus the bracket screws, and mail them to me, my 0.1 BTC will be yours.

2.  my router doles out ip addresses using dhcp.  the Avalon comes with a preset address.  can the Avalon be reconfigured to accept dhcp assigned addresses from my router or do i have to switch dhcp to manual static addresses?

Yes, it can be a DHCP client and get its IP address that way.

I gave mine a static IP address on my network, outside of the DHCP range, so that I don't have to hunt for it if it gets assigned a different IP somehow.

If I wanted to get fancy I could give it a static assignment on the DHCP server, based on its MAC address.
1164  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL is keeping a portion of first batch chips for their own mining farm on: March 24, 2013, 08:00:06 PM
Obvious COI is obvious.

To do the right thing, Josh either needs to step down from his BFL position, or fold this "Mining Company" idea.

He explicitly stated when he took the BFL position that he would not further expand his "mining footprint":

Q. You are going to have an unfair advantage when it comes to mining equipment, you’ll be able to get as much as you want before anyone else!
 A. I will not be expanding my mining footprint as it would be a conflict of interest.  I will continue with my current obligations and already acquired/paid for equipment but will not be purchasing or utilizing additional equipment as part of my mining operations.  This is one of the hardest changes I will be making, as I firmly believe there are plenty of opportunities in this space that I am going to be missing out on, but I believe I can do more good for the bitcoin community as a whole working to provide that equipment to people as opposed to using it myself.
1165  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Exploring existing chips/soc/processor for bitcoin mining on: March 24, 2013, 07:55:38 PM
I believe Avalon is not a sASIC (hard copy), but rather is a "standard cell" ASIC.

Speaking of exploring new processors, I think it would be interesting to see how the upcoming Parallella platform does for Bitcoin mining (or Litecoin).  I don't expect it will be any kind of breakthrough performance, but it would still be interesting to try.
1166  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL is getting awfully quiet.... on: March 23, 2013, 08:24:20 PM
Be all that as it may, do you really have to make a thread about it?  Do you think the poor SOBs on the hook for 500 BTC or more do not realize the gravity of the situation?

I guess you're doing it for the lulz, eh?
1167  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL news? on: March 23, 2013, 12:54:47 AM

Who ever set up that "production area" is a fucking idiot and does not really understand what they are doing, certainly as regards Anti-static procedures for handling  ASICS and PCB's at the level they claim they have.

Sorry but that is an epic FAIL.........

I hadn't looked closely before.

Are those really plastic mats covering the carpet, with wheeled chairs on top of them, and metal-framed desks?

Wow.  When I was young I once worked in an office that was set up like this.  I got "bit" many times a day by powerful discharges, and they messed with the Mac II on the desk whenever they struck. (they would cause the floppy drive to spontaneously eject.)
1168  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL news? on: March 23, 2013, 12:30:53 AM
We should thank BFL for showing us all how NOT to make an ASIC bitcoin miner.

LOL....lesson learned for you suckers who put up money 9 months ago for vaporware? Also lesson learned for potential ASIC vendors?

I sure hope so. Grin

As an Avalon Batch 1 and Batch 2 purchaser, I thank BFL for not sending network difficulty through the roof, which means more sweet mining for me.

As a prospective Avalon Batch 3 purchaser, I'm disappointed that BFL is not there with a product to compete with their high price point.

As a Bitcoiner, the reality of just one ASIC vendor left standing and holding a monopoly on the market worries me.
1169  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL news? on: March 22, 2013, 04:38:47 PM
I don't understand why their problems with the "test rig" are blocking the entire project.

Why can't they have the assembly house put a few chips onto boards and test them that way?  Make up a Jalapeno board to test a single chip at a time.

Sure, they want to test all of the chips and bin them before placing them onto boards, but they should still be able to make progress in parallel by just slapping some on boards blindly and testing them that way...no?

They made such a big deal about "investing heavily in high speed production equipment" with their reflow oven purchase.  Time to put that investment to work?
1170  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: March 22, 2013, 04:35:56 PM
I'm in the US, and DHL is always very fast for me, for receiving international shipments.

Once DHL has it, I would expect it to take no more than 3 business days, if you're in the US.  Other countries may vary.
1171  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: What is the price of Batch 3? on: March 22, 2013, 04:07:25 PM
FWIW, I paid 114 BTC for a batch 1 unit, and 75 BTC for batch 2.
1172  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why Avalon's "greed" is good on: March 22, 2013, 04:56:20 AM
It would be nice if there were a 10-chip ~2.8GH/s product available so smaller players could participate.
1173  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The latest Avalon announcement in China(Translated). Batch #3, price and more. on: March 21, 2013, 05:56:41 AM
Imagine what an in-hand unit from batch 1 might go for...

Is it a physical card, or a digital code?
1176  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 16 Avalon photos on: March 20, 2013, 04:27:31 AM
I saw the first photo of the power plug. I get the end that plugs into the AVALON, but the other end that plugs into the wall is not what I use in my home - USA.

The attached picture is what I have at my home and that doesn't seem compatible with the power cord picture.

Mine came with a regular US power cord.  The power cord pictured was not delivered to the US.

It's a regular ATX power supply.  Any IEC power cable will work.

I think you just login as "root", with no password.
1178  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: You have BTC ready when Avalon 3 batch opens? on: March 20, 2013, 03:54:07 AM
BitPay is said to be the payment processor for batch 3.

Y'all might also think about creating BitPay accounts, and maybe funding them if that's an option, and learning how they work.

Account > guest checkout.

That's just the payment processor, right? I'm not sure how it happened when people bought their Avalon's but weren't you taken to a payment processor like Bitpay or given an address to send the funds to? Bitpay is for merchants and I don't think they want everyone trying to make merchant accounts (because that's all they have) just to make a payment.

Batch 2 used walletbit.  You could create an account and get a nice receipt you can view when you login, or you could "checkout as guest", which gave you nothing but a bitcoin address to blindly send 75 BTC off into.  No order number, no email, nothing.  Mind you both walletbit and the avalon webstore were unstable, and you were lucky to get pages to load.

I used guest checkout and got a order confirmation email, a payment recipt email and a payment confirmation email, all within about 1 minute. It was easy.

Was that in "Batch 2 Wave 1", 03-Feb, or "Batch 2 Wave 2", some time later?
