1581  Other / Off-topic / Re: Already delays in BFL shipment plans? on: November 19, 2012, 09:09:40 PM
What is Plan B?

-----------------------------------------------

This goes for all the other companies not just BFL. (Avalon / bASIC)

At what point is it time to call it quits?

A) Is it when one vendor ships and the one you ordered from is still in a holding pattern?

B) Is it when there are more than 2 delays?

C) Is it when the block halving has taken place?

D) Is it when the mass refunds start for any one vendor? (any of the three companies)

Once one of the vendors begins shipping on-demand without a queue, that will be when most ppl holding a pre-order with any other vendor will cancel and will order from the shipping vendor.

IMO.
1582  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BTCFPGA bASICs "ready to ship" on: November 19, 2012, 04:36:30 PM
Having our orders Ready To Ship will save a lot of time for the ship team.  If we had waited until product was in the shop, sorting out all the orders, payments, free & paid upgrades, shipping upgrades and special customer requests would have brought our process to a standstill.  Mine and Tom's intention was to get everything staged as far as possible so we don't fall down at the goal line.
We'll have boxes & bubble wrap, shipping labels and everything ready so the units could literally be packaged while still warm.

Getting these bASICs out to customers on time will require a lot more than just having the product in hand...

I hope you guys are prestaging a lot of other things too, like the stations that are going to be used to load the firmware and test the devices.  Be sure you have lots of USB cables, power cables, power supplies, power strips, etc on hand, with spares, and test the cables and power supplies and PCs etc beforehand.
1583  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: November 19, 2012, 03:02:06 AM
What if we started a "release the shareholder data" bounty?

A fund to be paid to Nefario upon delivery of the shareholder data.

We know he responds to money.  Wasn't a big point of contention surrounding this whole mess whether or not he got paid some salary for operating glbse?

I don't like the idea too well myself, but it might work.
1584  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL ASICs featured in issue #4 of Bitcoin Magazine on: November 08, 2012, 06:11:06 AM
The toggle-rate is so high that they are running the chips with much lower frequency that you would normally expect to run 65nm designs on to protect them from overheating. Had they gone with other package (eg. flip-chip), they could've run them at much higher clocks.

Can the chip package be changed to a more thermally efficient design in a subsequent production run of chips without having to make a new mask, and incur a whole new set or NRE costs?
1585  Other / Off-topic / Re: Already delays in BFL shipment plans? on: November 06, 2012, 05:42:49 PM
To this end we've purchased an entire SMT assembly suite and hired a capable team to run it. These units are currently being installed in our new facility.

This implies that they have hired ppl who are already proficient at operating the SMT machines.

With that said, their statement that they "are currently being installed in our new facility" implied that they had already received the machines, but when questioned, they backpedaled and admitted they did not in fact possess the machines yet.  I wonder if the same is true of this "capable team".
1586  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL ASICs featured in issue #4 of Bitcoin Magazine on: November 06, 2012, 05:33:31 PM
I will offer a 20BTC bounty to anybody who posts a measurement of the size of the die used in BFL's "SC" devices...

I will also offer a 20BTC bounty for knowledge of which process node BFL is using...

Hi Elden, the node and method are detailed in the upcoming issue of bitcoin magazine.   (Issue #4).

This is the information that was supposed to be contained.
1587  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Are ASIC's the endgame? on: November 06, 2012, 05:24:29 PM
For all intensive purposes ASICs are as good as it gets.

Mah purposes be mo' intensive den yours.

I agree that the move to ASICs will likely be the last big leap before quantum processing.  That said, within the limits of today's ASIC technology, I think there's still room for a few more doublings of efficiency yet.

Regardless of the technology, there's always the possibility of algorithmic improvements -- "mathematical shortcuts".  Things like this:

1588  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC Development Status on: November 06, 2012, 04:11:33 AM
Why does everyone ask that when they know I can't reply Cheesy
What do you mean? as in BFL has yet to inform you of this or you are not allow to say? little digging say they were suppose to do this Oct/Nov.
Just that BFL have usually been very secret and if I know something everyone else doesn't know, of course I'm not going to be the one to announce it

I hope you're not saying that when you come back from your tour.

PSUs and molex connectors are great, i'm sure, but I for one do not have a pc to use with my bASIC. I will be using a RPi to host it, so molex  and PSUs are out of the question.

I suppose I will wait for you to specify exactly what kind of dc adapter we will need.

Me too I'm not interested in molex stuff.
Tom could you please just specify exactly what kind of dc adapter we will need and make it easy.

Thanks

As far as I know, you can force a PSU to power on by tying 2 pins together on the ATX connector:

http://pinouts.ru/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml

Just short PSON to ground permanently.

Or you can buy a ready-made gadget for this purpose:

I also now provide switches for your ATX power supplies if it is not the host system: Can be for modular and non-modular types. Pricing is 1.0BTC each

I believe what abracadabra posted is correct. The board is supposed to have a female 4pin molex as well as a female DC coaxial connector.
My understanding was that it is to be a center +ve 2.1mmID 5.5mmOD type.

I also see from the bASIC website that a power adapter aka "wall wart" does not appear to be included in the accessories so you will probably have to provide your own.

I would wait though for Tom to confirm these points.

Are you sure it's the 2.1mm ID barrel connector?  There is also a type with 2.5mm ID.

If you use a "wall wart", you will need one that supplies quite a few amps.  To supply 100W at 12V, it would need to handle 8.333A.  You can get 12V "power brick"-style adapters on eBay rated up to 10A.

I plan to use an ATX power supply myself.  I trust their quality and output stability more than I do random wallwarts.  I'd hate to kill a thousand-dollar piece of hardware because I powered it using a crappy wallwart.

As I said that was my understanding from previous pages reading. The exact post I cannot find now. Embarrassed   Tom will let us know. The 2.5mmID 5.5mmOD type is going to be used on the BFL SC singles.

Browsing the connectors on digikey, I can't even find any in the 2.1mm size that are rated to carry more than 5A.  In the 2.5mm size they have a few rated for 10A.
1591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Need help understanding litecoin mining calculator on: November 03, 2012, 09:38:24 PM
I'm having some trouble understanding the numbers I'm seeing on litecoinpool's mining calculator.

http://www.litecoinpool.org/calc?hashrate=325&difficulty=22.36096172

Putting in my hashrate and current difficulty, the graph puts 50% probability of finding a block at about 2.4 days.

But the numbers shown in the Expected Rewards section don't seem to match.  If I'm finding a block every 2.4 days on average, I would expect to earn 145.833 LTC at 7 days, but it shows 102.332 LTC.

Why the difference?

A irc channel just for tech support first batch.  Set it up now, get people invited - developer, software, pre order customers.

This way all the discussion related to when we get them will be moderated and controlled. We will also be able to help each other better this way. I am only talking about this being active during early release times, not permanent

[...]

Thoughts?

IRC might be useful for that sort of thing, but it's very ephemeral. The first bASIC shipment will be worldwide (I'm in Australia, myself) and it might be a bit difficult for people to get assistance at times. That's not saying IRC doesn't have a use here; just that it probably shouldn't be the main support line.

Tom has talked about the possibility of setting up a forum; I think that would be an excellant idea and would allow a much higher degree of moderation than either here or IRC.

That said, I don't know the degree to which people would use something like that [has anyone here had much experience with the BFL forums and the degree to which they are used/abused?] so it may or may not be worthwhile. Remember that Tom has a much smaller client base than BFL, so the cost per client, measured in both time and money, is possibly far higher.

In any case, even in the absence of a forum, I'm sure we'll find some way to communicate, either here, an ad-hoc IRC channel, Reddit, or some other forum, so I wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage (we're still a month off, remember).

Maybe each vendor could be given a subforum here, in which they have moderating powers.

For the record: I will contact the FCC and find out what changes we need to make if any to keep within regulation.

Design-wise, if you think you may have an issue with unintentional radiation, you might consider using a spread-spectrum clock source.

Someone posted this in the other thread.  Looks like a lot of good info on the subject: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/398

If you wanna sniff around yourself for unintentional radiation, there's a handy gadget ppl are calling RTLSDR that can function as a cheap spectrum analyzer for radio sources from 64MHz to 2.2GHz or so: http://www.rtlsdr.org/
1596  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASICs any proof they are coming for ANY of the companies? on: November 02, 2012, 02:36:12 PM
asic companies are poisoning cats.
I fucking hate cats.

I actually decided against investing with ASICMINER in the end because of the project leader's forum name.

A source tells me that the Bitcoin Magazine article alludes to a 45nm or smaller process.

Not very concrete.
1598  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Requests Input on: November 02, 2012, 03:02:12 AM
... so who's going?

Coz the discussion moved on over to the BFL forum.
The result is that Yochdog was chosen from the votes.

I know the result - but haven't heard any news re. visiting BFL labs (not here and not on forums@bfl).

Do you know when Yochdog is going?

Still waiting for firm dates from Josh.  Hoping we get it nailed down soon.

...also I want everyone to remember our refund policy. If you have any doubts what so ever about the bASIC line of Bitcoin mining devices or if you need a refund for any reason at all please do not hesitate to email me and request to cancel your order.

That seems at odds with the "Terms & Conditions" page on the website:

Quote from: bitcoinasic.com
Due to the nature of how we buy the parts to build these units, once an order has been placed and payment has been made - the order cannot be canceled.

...

We do not issue refunds however we do offer a full 1 year warranty.

Maybe the page needs updating?

Aren't you guys Isn't Tom supposed to start shipping in 1 month?
fixed this for you. its only one person

One guy plus a bunch of temps, come shipping time.

The first "batch" is scheduled to begin shipping the first week after thanksgiving. I have probably only 2 people confirmed so far to help out, I still have to interview others and depending on our order load come the end of November I may need another 3-8 people to work 1-2 weeks.
