1121  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: I want to have a serious discussion about BFL on: March 29, 2013, 03:22:43 AM
I have a FPGA single so the ASIC was "only" about $700 down which I put on a credit card. For me, waiting is really the best option. I can't get an ASIC for anywhere near $700 and if BFL folds, I can always do a charge back, especially since I have never done one before.

I'll let it ride and file a paypal dispute, like everyone else will, if they end up trying to fuck everyone.

You guys do know that the chargeback window normally closes about 90 days after the purchase is made, right?
1122  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Need some advice on: March 29, 2013, 02:57:30 AM
Just sell the FPGAs.  You'll have no problem moving those.

When (if) trade-in time comes, just say "Oops, I don't haz them anymore.  I guess I'll have to pay the difference to keep my orders."
1123  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: X6500 - Power Issue on: March 28, 2013, 07:23:24 PM
Is it a rev-3 unit with the red board and fans, or the earlier one with the blue board?

My red-board ones have 3 LEDs.
1124  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Beef with BFL (Constructive Criticism Only) on: March 28, 2013, 07:21:58 PM
Would like to see SCAMMER TAG added to ALL BFL employees

That is not what I would call constructive.  Deleting your post.

I think the poster has a point.   A company that is so far behind in promises and make further promises repeatedly and are still taking people's money with ship dates promised out two months should be considered a scammer.   Why that offends your sense of fairness eludes me.   Even if they are working hard to produce the units paid for 9 months ago, their current actions of "order now" and giving new promises which we know not to be true, would qualify them to be labeled as a scammer.

His criticism is constructive.   when you have screwed up, you should stop collecting people's money until you can actually physically deliver what you overpromised many times before.

I don't know about a tag, but I do think that BFL ought to stop taking new orders until they actually begin shipping.

bASIC closed their orders after they had taken on "enough".  Imagine how much bigger that mess would be if they had left them open.
1125  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon chip orders on: March 28, 2013, 03:38:48 PM
This is not to compete with Avalon, want the chips for their own consumption.
We have read the statements of BitSyncom saying that they will sell but in practice this does not sell, I'm trying to reach and no one listens to me, so I finally decided to do it publicly that seems to be the only way to contact.
I am shocked to read in some places that interest BitSyncom LLC is decentralized network, when really have centrallized as never before.

PD:All the people who are asking a PCB single-chip, in this market already exists, it is called ZTEX USB-FPGA Module 1.15x It has the same computing power than a single chip Avalon.

I was not able to find a price for this model in their shop.
I had wanted to look at the cost and estimate the income, but did not find either answer quickly.

Looks like the shop doesn't have any at the moment.  Here's the ztex thread:

...
Just going by what got people scammer tags on here in the past it's sort of amazing that the BFL accounts don't have them. They are plainly lying about their shipping and have been every time they give us a shipping date estimate, we know this now because we know they never had any chips until just recently. They lied, they even gave us the evidence that they had been lying all along.

Didn't they say they actually had chips way back in Oct or Nov, and they worked, but they just want to make them a little better for the good of the customers and all that?  I thought they were claiming functionality, but some clock timing issues kept the chips from scaling to their potential.

Twice actually.  First they supposedly had chips in October, but they were fail because they had a "diffraction issue".  Apparently we're to believe that they were completely unaware of the need to apply OPC to the masksets.

Then they supposedly had another round of chips in December.  The ones with the "clock buffer issues", still in QFN packaging.
1127  Economy / Goods / Re: Series 1 5btc casascius coin on: March 28, 2013, 04:09:34 AM
Seems like a good FAQ item for casascius.com.

Also, I too am interested in a series 1 5 BTC coin.  Not to threadjack or anything, but, uh, PM me with an offer if you've got one to sell.  Thanks.
1128  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why Isn't Bitmit more popular? on: March 28, 2013, 12:02:00 AM
I find the site is really slow to respond a lot.  Maybe they're being DoS'd or something.

If they could solve that issue I might use it more.

I like browsing through the "newly listed" tab to see if anything cool just showed up that I can pwn up quick.
1129  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTS 7 BFL singles on: March 27, 2013, 11:53:49 PM
I think asking $600 is more than the market will bear, especially now given BFL's uncertain future.

$500-550 was more the ballpark sale price a few months back, when BFL looked more rosy (and thus trade-in options looked attractive).  Given how things look now, even that may be asking too much.

If he actually wants to sell any, I think he will need to come down.
1130  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 27, 2013, 09:50:27 PM
Actually most modern ATX power supplies are autoswitching, and can take anywhere from 90V to 250V or so.

I just plugged my GPU miner with it's regular Antec PSU right into my outlet that I had wired up for 240V and turned it on.  No magic smoke came out, just hashes.

If in doubt, the label on the side of the power supply will indicate acceptable input voltage(s).
1131  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: My Beef with BFL (Constructive Criticism Only) on: March 27, 2013, 06:00:31 PM
Just 4 months ago BFL looked like a dominant player in the ASIC industry, Avalon too had customer service problems in that there was no proof/pic/video of a working unit.  People looking to invest may have been drawn to BFL because they were doing the most advertising, had the most polished website, and actually had a track record with selling FPGA units.

Not quite on-topic, but Avalon/ngzhang had a track record of selling FPGA units too.
1132  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Pool fees for an asic users are somewhat amusing on: March 27, 2013, 05:51:46 PM
I'm mining on bitparking at the moment, so I can capture 3 altcoins via merged-mining in addition to the BTC revenue.

The altcoin revenue more than makes up for the pool's 2.5% fee, and being straight PPS I don't have to worry about variance, orphans, etc.

I have it set up to payout directly to the exchange account, so I don't even have to run the altchain clients.
1133  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASIC Batch 3 [CLOSED- Seven 4 module Avalons ordered] on: March 27, 2013, 04:05:11 PM
Wow you guys really don't know much about mains power if you think a modern US house is gonna be limited to 9.6kW.

The US standard for "regular" outlets is 120V, but they still run 240V into a most houses, plus a neutral leg which is used to make the 120V circuits.  A lot of the really high current appliances (electric stove, heat pump) are run on 240V circuits, for efficiency and to save on wire cost.

I have one of my "regular" outlets wired up for 240V, and I run my GPU miner on it when it's here.

so excuse my us ignorance, do they have a mixed power supply there where they have a lot of step up transformers from the generators to give 240

or do they have 240 supply mixed in with 110v so dual lines or something

Huh

I believe how it works is the utility's step-down transformer that supplies the house has 3 taps on it, one on each end of the secondary winding (the "legs"), plus a center tap (the "neutral").

To get 120V, you can wire a circuit using one of the two legs against the neutral.  To get 240V, you wire both legs against each other and leave the neutral out.

A typical house has a number of 120V circuits for regular outlets and lights and things, and then some 240V circuits for high current loads like a stove, heat pump, dryer, welder, etc.

By doubling the voltage on the high current circuits, the amperage is halved, so the wires don't need to be sized as large.  The tradeoff being that 240V is more hazardous to work with than 120V.
1134  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon Components & Spare Parts Discussion on: March 27, 2013, 02:01:44 PM
One of the front intake fans on mine is starting to make a bit more noise than it used to.

I'd love to be able to order a replacement to keep on hand as a spare, so I'm not faced with downtime or a hackjob solution if one fails.

I'm sure the fans used were chosen with a certain set of characteristics, and not just any old 120mm fan will do as a replacement.

When does the auction end?
1136  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Paypal troubles? on: March 27, 2013, 11:56:59 AM
I seem to remember a guy on IRC saying he had his paypal account suspended just for making an order from BFL, no dispute or refund or anything.  That he had to call paypal to get it unlocked, and that it was caused by the BFL account being involved in "suspicious activity".

I wish I could remember who.  Maybe it's in the logs...
1137  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon should start mining for the missing batch 1 customers. on: March 27, 2013, 11:51:31 AM

I'll offer $200 for the 7950, assuming it's fully working.

lol...hmmmm...reality is so harsh....

wonders how these 6...possible 7 avalons at 650watts apiece are going to get power from a 4Kw residential service...

open your brain folks

zif

Easily.  200 amp 240V service is standard in most modern residences these days.  That's good for 48kW.

I recommend that CoinHoarder power the Avalons all on 240V circuits, for efficiency's sake.
