er...wat?

I sure don't see any mini-PCIe sockets in the photos of that board on newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130235

I've never heard of an extender cable for mini-PCIe...

Edit: Do you mean that the x1 slots are not detecting your cards?

Maybe you need to jumper A1 to B17:

Wow, nice pictures.  I wish I'd been the guy to do it, but I instead just plugged mine in first thing.

I think it's a shame how some ppl are failing to appreciate the design that went into the Avalon cases, and are planning to drill them full of holes, or get rid of the case completely.  I can only hope that they'll sell what's left of the Avalon to me after they kill it.
1223  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 16, 2013, 03:01:03 PM
...annnnd it's paid for itself, USD-wise.  33 BTC earned in just 91 hours.   Shocked

A bit more to go to break-even BTC-wise yet.
1224  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 15, 2013, 07:45:51 PM
you just restarted cgminer or restarted the whole thing with power on/off?

Just cgminer.

System --> Startup --> cgminer --> Restart

I stood mine up vertically with the PS at the top, desktop PC style.

https://i.imgur.com/ray5NRA.jpg

It runs very cool and quiet.  The case is always cool to the touch, and the air coming out the back is not very warm.  The warmest air is what comes out of the power supply.  Temp3 is consistently reported at 42c.

I have not had to use it yet, but what you see behind the Avalon is a Web Power Switch.  Should the Avalon need to be power-cycled, I can just access the WPS (remotely if need be) and have it do it.  If need be, the WPS can even be configured to ping the Avalon itself and automatically power-cycle it if it becomes unresponsive.

All in all a pretty handy gadget:

http://www.digital-loggers.com/lpc.html

It could easily pay for itself in just one or two incidents.

Edit: Actually, I just realized I've always been feeling the right side of the case.  Touching the left side now where the modules anchor to the case, it's quite warm.  I guess it's dissipating through the case like it's meant to.

how loud is it Bogart?

A lot quieter than the GPU miner that sits near it.  It's making a bit more noise not that I have it running at 300MHz.  Definitely louder than a normal desktop PC.

A few minutes ago it freaked out and ran the fans on full blast for a bit a few times.  Looking at the status page shows crazy values for the temp and fan readings:

Then it stopped hashing.  I restarted cgminer and all is well again for now.

1227  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] Open air frames on: March 15, 2013, 05:14:02 PM
I might be interested in selling kits to build these sort of frames.  You'd get all the pieces pre-cut and pre-drilled, and a bag of fastener hardware.  Everything you need, just some assembly required.  That way it can ship in a nice compact tube mailer.

Do you know what you might pay for such a thing?  If there's enough interest I may start offering these.

1229  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: When are you shutting down your GPU rigs? on: March 15, 2013, 11:17:27 AM
I shut them down after reward halving and opened them again after BTC $30

I'm not sure how sound a strategy this is.

If I hadn't let my rig sit broken through last spring/summer in the $4-6 times, I'd be sitting pretty right now.

Speculation of course...
1230  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: March 15, 2013, 11:10:08 AM
Oh i forgot i will drill a couple of tiny holes for sure just on top of PSu to let some of the hot air to come out instead going into the box. The holes must be tiny because they will not destroy aluminum and it will be still able to work as a heat sink

OMG swarf.

I'll buy the Avalon off you after you fry it.   Smiley
1231  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Why not we all request refunds on a mass level? Power in the people! on: March 15, 2013, 05:21:23 AM
Wow.  You must be pretty angry opentoe.

I'm not.

I have a small personal interest in BFL's success.  I ordered 2 Jalapeņos and a Little Single in February.  I'm not going to cancel my order and ask for a refund.  I consider it a sunk cost.

I believe BFL is really trying to ship the products they've been promising us.  The last thing they need is to have the proverbial rug pulled out from under them.

I also have a larger nonpersonal interest in BFL's success: Diversity.  We need more ASIC makers.  If Avalon ends up the only one standing when it comes to mining ASICs you can actually buy and hold in your hand, I think Bitcoin is in trouble.  "Power in the people" you say?  I agree.

I'm going to go ahead and extend this offer now: Josh, if you feel like BFL is is trouble and you're not able to make the chips/boards/miners work, please, let me come and help you guys.  I can contribute quite a variety of technical and nontechnical skills.  My price is only one Single per week worked.  (Obviously if the project fails I lose too and get nothing.)  I will sign NDAs.

I made this same offer to Tom, but he did not accept.  Don't go out like that.

I'm sorry for abandoning this thread.  Thanks iambaboon for taking over the list.

Please continue discussion in the new thread.

Watch out ppl.  Notice the account creation date.

He's been PMing me saying he has an Icarus for sale, and not responding to my PM questions.

He sent me a paypal invoice for it earlier today, but when I PM'd asking for a pic of the Icarus, I got no response.

Now tonight he posts this here...

Edit: Also notice the similarities to this one that got me the other week: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=146613.0
1234  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitfetch - Anonymous Remote Torrent Downloading on: March 15, 2013, 02:53:32 AM
Did you know about burnbit.com?

It does the opposite of what Bitfetch does.  It turns an http downloadable file into a torrent.

It's been useful to me a number of times when I needed to download a big file over an unreliable connection.
1235  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] Radeon HD 5xxx reference design screw set on: March 14, 2013, 06:21:52 PM
I have a ref design 5870 that I need to replace the fan on (and remove the shroud to do so), and the screw heads are all stripped.  I'll probably be drilling them out.

Once I do, I'll need replacement screws to put it back together.

Does anyone have a set they wanna sell me?  I'll offer 0.05 BTC for a set shipped to me in the US (US seller preferred).

PM me.

Looks like I had the 20130218 build.  I flashed it to 20130225 a few minutes ago.  I like the new cgminer status page.

What are the "-32" firmware builds?

How can I tell what firmware version I'm running?
1239  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Avalon ASIC] Batch #2 pre-Sale Thread on: March 13, 2013, 03:38:56 PM
They NEED your money to assemble batch #1.

Go give your hard earned to the Chinese but do not expect anything (except a headache) from them in return!
Who cares? batch #3 orders will pay for batch #2 customers.

(lol)

lol, bitponzi!

You know, I'm OK with it, so long as they don't plan to continue operating like that forever.

Developing an ASIC is an enormously difficult and expensive job, and I'm glad to help contribute to the effort, in exchange for a share of the sweet rewards.

I got my batch 1 Avalon yesterday, and am looking forward to delivery of my batch 2.
1240  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Batch #1 Ships on: March 13, 2013, 02:52:48 AM
It turns out that the package had my correct full address and my correct phone number on it.  I don't know why DHL wasn't able to find me or call me yesterday.

Because DHL (and all it's competitors) outsource part of their fleet to psychopaths in white vans. They do get a stipend if they colour and label the van yellow (or brown) but they are still white van men (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_van_man)

They have no respect for people on the road and don't care for you as a customer.

They know they will be replace by another Lithuanian in 2 months time anyways.

I get all 4 major companies here at our office once or twice a day (delivery and pickup rounds) and religiously keep all their mobile numbers and names. If you don't know them personally you are basically SOL

Interesting.  I never knew that.

I guess this guy is collecting the stipend: https://i.imgur.com/3BYOBqj.jpg
