His computer will only work in NYC? This blows my mind!
He either checks the connecting ip or has the certificates on a pc there.

I do not have my hardware 2 factor auth

could this be Josh Zerlin?

The thought did cross my mind after seeing http://joshzerlan.com/

Not saying I necessarily believe it.

And what will happen when China raise the big firewall and block any bitcoin activity ?

Or when Goldman-Sachs-controlled Europe & US do the same? Once Bitcoin became a serious threat to them?

WTF? "Goldman-Sachs controlled Europe"? I thinks someones been reading a bit too much Alex Jones.

The easiest way for the plutocrats to kill Bitcoin will be to do a 51% attack.

That will destroy the entire system in one blow.  Much easier than sniping miners and users here and there in an unending war.

When you've got unlimited fiat, obtaining that kind of hash power isn't too hard.
1385  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 25, 2013, 08:24:02 PM
To someone that knows it, is it normal for a parcel shipped with a 100$ DHL service or so to take 2 weeks to reach the old continent from China?

Can't get a clue over it.

It's not.

I have ordered things from Asia shipped to me in the US by DHL Express a few times now.  It's always quite fast.  That's why DHL is so desirable for intl shipments.

I usually have a tracking number within 24 hours of ordering, and the shipment is usually in my hands about 3 business days later.

I too would like to hear something from Team Avalon.
1386  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The bASIC Refund Tracking Thread on: January 24, 2013, 07:13:00 PM
My BTC address is in my sig.

Hidden in your sig.  The pixel height of sigs is restricted now (because of Tom's signature ad campaign with its large fontsize).

The only way I can see your BTC address is if I highlight part of your sig, and use shift + arrow keys to scroll it.
1387  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC validation on: January 24, 2013, 04:55:58 AM
I'll give $1 cash money to the first end user who can verify that it exists.
What's a $ ?
1/17 of a BTC
1/18 of a BTC now Smiley
I know. Part of me loves it, part of me hates it. Last time it went up like this, it crashed $3 as soon as it hit 15. I prefer a nice, slow, steady increase in price.
Yup.  Too fast.  Feels bubbly.

I can see a correction down to 14-15-ish coming.
1388  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: bad news for bASIC - not shipping til mid Jan at best on: January 24, 2013, 04:35:07 AM
link the "dave's" computer bit. I hadn't heard this.

It was discussed on IRC #BTCFPGA.  Some customers got spammed from Dave's email with links to malware or something hosted on a .it website.

Dave came on and said he'd since removed his old hard drive and installed a new Win7 on a new drive.

He also said this slowed down his processing of refunds.
1389  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The bASIC Refund Tracking Thread on: January 24, 2013, 04:12:39 AM
I believe Tom got a "community save" from his antics last night.. hopefully to finally come to a sense of ending with this whole shit storm..

You know what, I'm OK with that...

This perpencity to allow people off the hook in the BTC world is astounding !!!!

The BTC community is creating this enviroment that attracts scams and CON artists.. it is the broken windows theory in action

...

So the first step is to not accept anything but total professionalism & compliance to the law..otherwise we will be stuck with Inaba/BFL/bASIC levels of service forever   Cry

I'm kinda torn on this one; It's something of a delicate issue.  But I have to come down on the side of truth and full disclosure.  Anything less makes us all look bad.

I don't think it's right how this is kind of being swept under the carpet here on BCT.  Posts and whole threads being quietly deleted, and this justified by the "hacked account" story.

But at least they are keeping their word on the refunds.

This is gonna be the real sticking point.  Unless Tom somehow walks into a giant pile of BTC, I think there's gonna be a big shortfall.

http://blockchain.info/address/19Ysizrie7XAGcqSTzhCTsMTuUaFU1hCEa

That's the address all of the BTC from the bASIC orders appear to have been swept into.  I imagine anyone who placed a BTC order can follow their payment address and see the coins ended up there.

We can see the order-sized payments rolling in, with their values usually extending to 4 decimal places.

We can and also a steady stream of roundish integer likely-human-generated denominations of BTC moving out over time.

25-Oct-2012: Some 5-and-change deposits begin appearing.  I think this is when the $60 DHL shipping upgrade was first offered.

29-Nov-2012: There's a big wave of refunds.  That would be after the "January delivery" post on the btcfpga forums.

11-Jan-2013: Again a wave of refunds.  Mine was included in that round.

Today the address is empty.

About 30,000 BTC passed through the address, which would be roughly 300 bASIC01s.  Seems like that could be all of the BTC pre-orders.

I'm not that good at reading blockchain.info, so I could be reading it wrong.

forum.btcfpga.com is not safe anymore. Where the fuck is "Buzz Dave"?

Can somebody explain the bold text to me? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=135301.msg1441516#msg1441516

[23:09:03] <@cp> seriously
[23:09:08] <@cp> if your not a customer

You should try IRC sometime.

I assume the channel being quoted is #BTCFPGA on FreeNode.  A channel made for discussion of MMQ, and now bASIC.  A channel in which cablepair is a channel operator, along with a few other individuals.

Channel operators have the power to kick users, ban users, set the channel topic, and to "op" (or "de-op") other users, etc.

Since buzzdave works for Tom, it makes sense that he would op him in the channel.
1391  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The bASIC Refund Tracking Thread on: January 23, 2013, 03:42:37 PM
Cablepair's account is compromised. Please treat any correspondence with him as fake until we can confirm that he has obtained control back to his account.

FWIW, I don't believe it.  I think it was really him posting.

I hope you guys can restore the posts if that proves to be the case.  I think they're important for ppl to see.
1392  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The bASIC Refund Tracking Thread on: January 23, 2013, 05:53:13 AM
Fuck that! His life and family are worth more than his customers money? You idiots are deserved to be scammed. Hes trolling and you guys all say " get help please" Yeah i know you have such a good heart.

You too have my sympathy.
1393  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 22, 2013, 09:37:44 PM
We underestimated the shipping cost by like $80 per unit

I would suggest that for the second batch and beyond, for all US orders, that Avalon make one big shipment (or a series of medium-sized shipments) to Yifu in New York, who can then ship them himself (or with an assistant) to individual US customers by UPS or similar.

This has been/is being considered as well, trust me when I said when are looking into other routes.

If you did that, you could save some shipping weight by removing the power supplies and installing new power supplies purchased stateside.

Save the left over power supplies still in China for non-US batch 2 customers.

(I may know of a guy in the NY area who may have a bunch of 1000W SeaSonic 80-Plus Platinum power supplies he will be needing to unload.  Not that Avalon will need 1000W.)
1394  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: MegaBigPower.com - Managed Hosted Mining on: January 22, 2013, 09:07:16 PM
To do it right, you ought to have:
 * Redundant internet connections to 2 or 3 different providers, ideally each using a different technology (cable, DSL, and fiber for instance).  These should be business-class managed connections with SLAs.  The kind where they call you when it goes down, usually within a minute.
 * Redundant cooling.  2 separate air conditioning systems, each one able to manage the full cooling load on its own, even on a hot day.  Plan for room to grow.
 * Redundant power feeds.  Connections to 2 different power providers.
 * Redundant standby generators, each one able to manage the full load of the equipment *and the cooling* and everything else on its own.  I would use 2 diverse fuel types, probably one Diesel and one propane/nat gas.  The gensets should be periodically tested, and of course maintained.  Plan for room to grow.
 * A UPS to condition the power, and keep everything from rebooting when grid power fails and the genset is still starting up.  It's OK if the air conditioning is not UPS-backed.

You'll need a lot of other things too, but those are some big ones.

You'll need a lot of interior wiring and load centers and such for power distribution.  If I were you I'd try and use 240V circuits to power everything whose power supply can accept it, for efficiency's sake.  Having the ability to remotely and/or programmatically power-cycle the circuits/outlets would be nice to have too.

You yourself should be redundant.  You should have a trusted partner who has full access and can do everything you can, in case something needs to be done and you're unavailable.

Thanks Bogart - great suggestions here.  I'll be honest - some of this redundancy fits my business plan, but not all of it.  For example getting redundant power feeds at upwards of 800A service is not in the cards - I don't think there's even another power provider in this city.  I plan to have one power service and one backup generator - but getting a backup generator that can supply full load is also going to be a trick.

For 200kW you'll probably be looking at 6-cyl turbocharged Diesels with liquid cooling.  Dry weight will be 1.5-2.5 tons.  I'd expect to pay at least $20k for a used one.

A transfer switch for that kind of load won't be cheap either.

Maybe I'm wrong, but somehow I think that one big intl shipment plus a bunch of small domestics will cost less than shipping direct to each customer by express intl means.

Of course this doesn't help matters with non-US customers.
1396  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 22, 2013, 07:54:38 PM
They've mentioned waiting till after CNY somewhere. Avalon remains the class act of the ASIC vendors.

Shipment of batch 2 will be after CNY.  I think they will take orders before then though.  I would guess around the first or second week of Feb.

I imagine the payment choices will be BTC or Wire Transfer, same as the first batch.
1397  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGox is apparently out of money... on: January 22, 2013, 07:34:31 PM
Funny, I withdrew $3,000 yesterday to Dwolla and got the money the same day.  Ditto on (I believe) the 18th.  Was actually quite surprised as I'm used to waiting several days.

I guess you used up a lot of their cushion.

With BTC value behaving like it is, I'll bet there's a lot of ppl doing the same thing right now (selling for fiat).
1398  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 22, 2013, 07:23:38 PM
When I sell something on e-bay, the more pictures I put the better it sells?
Doesn't seem to be the same when it comes to ASICs Cheesy

Yup.  [mining] ASICs are special like that.
1399  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Announcement] Avalon ASIC Ships on: January 22, 2013, 06:37:53 PM
@ BitSyncom
Since you have time to answer all the really nice questions above;
Maybe you have also the time to answer this?
-How many units have you ship so far
-and how much is the expected daily capacity before the CNY?

Or is it a trade secret?
Thanks for your time.

around 12 a day currently, so total about 40, however I am seriously unsure how many actually made it outside of the country, I'll be giving Jeffs tracking number soon as I get it, during business hours I call the people handling the shipping every 2 hours or so for updates.

We are seriously bottle necked by Customs at the moment ( due to upcoming CNY as well ) and are looking for more routes, it isn't really a trade secret as this is honestly beyond our control at this point. God, I hate sounding like BFL.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for.

When I ordered mine, the site said there were 130 left in the batch to order, so I guess mine is about #170 in line (maybe 150 or better now after some cancellations and unpaid orders).

Assuming the rate stays steady, allowing you guys 2 days off for the weekend, I guess mine would ship out around Thursday Jan 31st.

Everyone keeps asking where the picture came from... has no one seen this part of Avalon's website yet??
http://launch.avalon-asics.com/

OK, not as pretty as a boxy black render with a shiny Butterfly-Labs logo on it  Grin

If those are 120mm fans, that would make it a bit over 360mm wide, or 14 inches and change.

Should fit nicely in 3u of rack space with some brackets/rails, or maybe 4u.
