GameStop Saga being made into movie

MGM, Winklevoss Twins to Make Movie About Reddit’s GameStop Investors Taking on Wall Street

Haha I knew this was kinda inevitable but already?! Lool.

Quote
As reported by Deadline, MGM has acquired the book proposal The Antisocial Network from New York Times best-selling author Ben Mezrich. This book will look to tell the story of "a ragtag group of amateur investors, gamers, and internet trolls who brought Wall Street to its knees."

Films rights already been bought... interesting

Well, they bought the rights to a book proposal.  The book hasn't even been written and the story is far from over.  I think they're getting ahead of themselves.  When this thing finally finishes playing out, there might not be a Wall Street or a Hollywood or even a theater chain to watch it in! HODL!

edit:  I'm looking for a way to short the story.  I think it's going to be a bust; we've already lived it.

So many good posts, so few sMerits.

For a read up on the financial plumbing behind the stock and stock options markets: clogged financial systems

Very good write up about how stock and option trading actually works - who owns the assets, who pays who. An explanation of mechanisms that don't meet the eye.

In other words: a close look at possible insolvency for brokers (like RobinHood), hedge funds (Melvin Capital, Citadel) and stock or option clearinghouses (DTCC).

Recommended.

You are surely sounding optimistic these days, d_eddie... as compared to when we were in the $6ks in 2018 and you seemed to be wondering if we were ever going to make it above $12k again..

My how times have changed!!!!!!   Wink

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

few peeps want to be analyzed.. especially by a founding father...

 Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue

Actually I don't think I ever doubted we would be back to the ATH again. I might have thought some more down was in order, or I might have thought it would take a whie (did it? How long?), but I never thought the ATH was lost for good, so I doubt I ever wrote anything like that. Check again maybe?

Biodom already corrected me, look like wash sale rules wouldn't apply to bitcoin

That's right. I only noticed after replying to your post. It happens a lot to me when in catch up mode. Sorry for the useless repetition.

I'd already seen and read this page while researching the latest GME updates.

I think it's a recent addition, but I see the gentleman over there added a "subscribe" button. He says it is so I can receive a heads up when the squeeze begins to be squoze. OK, so I put in my email addy and... no, we don't like throwaway addresses. I tried several to no avail. I had to insert a (fake) gmail address to make it say "allright". Apparently, the jerk is looking for spam pastures.

RobinHood allows you to buy btc (and other cryptocurrencies), but you can't move it out. This could cause legitimate worries about all btc on RH being just paper IOUs.

So a number of btc newbies have some (paper?) btc on RH, and now they want to get it out of a likely sinking boat. The only option they have is sell now (taxable event, ouch!), get the money out (RH does allow you withdraw $$, duh!), keep aside the taxman's share (ouch again), send the money to some "normal" exchange, get less btc than you used to have (boo-ho!), transfer that to a wallet you control (your own keys: it's finally been turned into your bitcoin, win!).

I've got two questions - food for thought.

1) How many newbies are going to jump through the multiple hoops?

2) What if many actually do? There are likely consequences for RobinHood: assuming they never actually bought the backing crypto, they'd be under by a lot. Just think of the doge bull. I could care less about them, though. What happens to the price when a shitload of redditors sell at the same time?

TL;DR RH is really throwing shit at anyone trying to go against the system - either people who try to punish asshole over-100%-shorting hedge funds, or people who buy btc (or doge in recent days, well you know, newbies!). I wish RobinHood went out of business. Which isn't totally unlikely as a result of the latest shenanigans.

Are you sure about that? Wouldn't swapping paper BTC for real BTC fall under a wash rule for 'murikans?
Quote
The rule defines a wash sale as one that occurs when an individual sells or trades a security at a loss and, within 30 days before or after this sale, buys a "substantially identical" stock or security, or acquires a contract or option to do so.
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/w/washsalerule.asp

I wasn't thinking of a wash sale to dodge taxes. Quite the opposite: the newbie bitcoiner would have to sell on RH, likely at some profit, and pay taxes on that! That's what I meant by "setting aside the taxman's share": keeping some fiat for the taxes. That's why the soon to be bought substantially identical amount of btc would be a little less.

Down over 1200 in about 2 hours and still going... We're used to worse but I prefer to see it go up 1200 in about 2 hours nonetheless, instead of the other way around...

The whole market's a bit of a mystery to me atm, anyone cares to share his TA?

As for FA, I haven't got any clue at all... Saying these are very strange times is about as far as I'll get.

Never mind these temporary bollocks, friends1980. Michael keeps buying behind the curtains. Elon is onboard because it's inevitable. The corporate world is coming about, seeing btc more and more as the store of value it is.

Where's the world going?
The future looks uncertain.

Hey WO, as you can see from my name, I am the 3 millionth user on this beautiful forum, as evidenced by my Custom Title: Yes, really. In the very near future, I am going to study the details of signing and verifying messages using Bitcoin and also want to learn more about PGP. If you think there is something else I should pay attention to, feel free to say.

Having looked through many sections on the forum, I have not found a more interesting thread than this. I love your heated discussions, especially how you combine Bitcoin discussions with memes. Folks, I love your custom hats and I want one for myself, therefore, I firmly decided to become part of your team.

Bitcoin HODL!

If you participate well, then indeed thus thread is one of the best and is a large part of bitcoin history

Welcome and take care

El-duderino_ is emphasizing the "welcome" part, because he's simply dudely good that way.

I was emphasizing the "participate well" part, which is not about posting 3 million times about being the 3 millionth user.  Tongue

Can you imagine working in Gamestop HQ. Your stores have been closed for a year due to a plandemic and your stock is way down...facing bankruptcy, you see the writing on the wall when a major hedge fund known for killing companies shorts the shit out of your stock and starts having their media puppets talk about how worthless your stock is...
You sit there at the office, go on Monster.com to find another job, you start packing up your personal items so you don't have to worry about them later, you check in on your co-workers that will probably have a hard time finding another job...

Then you come into work the next day and find out that some random reddit posts are turning your company into the next Google.

I bet you it would be similar to working an night shift at any other nondescript location having worked there for many years with no desire to find any other employment because it all sucks, checking your phone on your lunch break and seeing a bitcoins value skyrocketing towards nineteen thousand dollars US and realizing that your night-shift-working days are about to be terminated with prejudice.  No other job required.
It would be similar to that but not quite as good Tongue

Soo true dat. And on topic.

As I understand it, it wasn't a random post, the guy had been buying GME regularly since 2019 and posted about it, and gotten ridiculed every time, until some other guys looked into the company and realized that it was actually doing fine and started buying too, and then more and more people did the same, and then it slowly snowballed. And now it's a grassroots movement against the hedgefonds.

Since late 2019, DeepF__Value had been buying GME call options at strike prices that, while ridiculously low for today's prices, were already a few times the market value at the time. As we all know, options can easily amplify underlying volatility tenfold or more. So he made millions on those options. Part of the profit, he turned into more GME options and some stock too. That's when the whole thing became big enough to be noticed outside the WallStreetBets echo chamber.

The starting analysis for buying bullish calls was entirely financial. He'd noticed their level of debt/cash flow was good enough to outrule any impending bankruptcy. Of course, all the hedgies shorting like mad were not helping at all.

Here's an orderly Twitter summary
https://twitter.com/MrBrownEyes2020/status/1354517067240771584

EDIT - here's the original Reddit posts where DeepFuckingValue says he's buying the options. Everyone is sell sell sell ffs! But he's got a clear vision and some diamond hands.

The day before yesterday there was a link on twitter showing a supposedly reputable source alleging short positions totaling 140% of GME market cap. Yesterday the jerk at Citadel said he covered and exited his fund's humungous short - but the outstanding shorts were still 136%, so people called BS. From what everyone was saying, it looked like the source of those figures was to be believed. Myself, I don't know - that's why I asked here.

Hey guys let's buy and hodl GME til the day we die! We can do it, let's make the billionaires lose for once (unless they join us ofc) Smiley

The billionaires changed their positions in coordination with RH tanking the buys so they are now riding the wave and will be the first to bail.

Isn't there a reliable source for short interest/amount of short positions?

‘They’re the Wall Observers, they’ve been in BTC for years’

We're poor now.

Guys, guise, guys!   One of the girls in this pic had barely turned 15 when this movie was released which means she was likely 14 when these promo pictures were taken.  Put your bitcoin back in your pocket and keep your stick on the ice!

Which movie? I thought the meme was from a random photo.

Time to share some WOsMerit! Keeping the last ordinary, boring merits for nonlegendaries.

I can imagine a new hollywood movie coming out later this year. The plot would be: "How a bunch of nerd gamers almost crashed the world economy. Thanks to a misteryous call, the infamous robinhood platform prevented the massive short squeeze and saved the Wall Street brokers from bancruptcy. This will be a lesson for all shorters for the times to come.."

The movie should be called "The Big Long".

Would make a nice bookend to that other movie, lol.

The SEC is going to look into what has just happened:

Statement of Acting Chair Lee and Commissioners Peirce, Roisman, and Crenshaw Regarding Recent Market Volatility

Quote

The Commission is closely monitoring and evaluating the extreme price volatility of certain stocks’ trading prices over the past several days. Our core market infrastructure has proven resilient under the weight of this week’s extraordinary trading volumes. Nevertheless, extreme stock price volatility has the potential to expose investors to rapid and severe losses and undermine market confidence.

As always, the Commission will work to protect investors, to maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and to facilitate capital formation. The Commission is working closely with our regulatory partners, both across the government and at FINRA and other self-regulatory organizations, including the stock exchanges, to ensure that regulated entities uphold their obligations to protect investors and to identify and pursue potential wrongdoing. The Commission will closely review actions taken by regulated entities that may disadvantage investors or otherwise unduly inhibit their ability to trade certain securities.

In addition, we will act to protect retail investors when the facts demonstrate abusive or manipulative trading activity that is prohibited by the federal securities laws. Market participants should be careful to avoid such activity. Likewise, issuers must ensure compliance with the federal securities laws for any contemplated offers or sales of their own securities.

The Commission will continue our work on behalf of investors and the markets. In this regard, we hope to facilitate a robust public dialogue among market participants and investors on the structure and operation of our securities markets. Members of the public can submit tips or complaints through the Commission’s website using this online form. Members of the public with questions should contact the Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy at 1-800-732-0330, ask a question using this online form, or email us at Help@SEC.gov.

I can see the guys at Citadel shitting in their pants /s
