1001  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Which Old Miners did You Like? on: April 22, 2023, 03:37:22 AM
Canaan's Avalon 841's. Built like a tank and near indestructible, very easy to tweak the settings for everything covered by the cgminer API (that Kano wrote btw). I still have 10 of them. Most are long retired but I still run 2 as very quiet wintertime space heaters pulling 750-800w yet still delivering ~9TH each.

I was pretty much unlucky with the Avalon 841's, I never liked them, they were never stable and kept failing all the time, but to be fair, I have to make clear that I bought those gears used, so it's very likely the previous owner/s have abused them pretty much, however, I bought hundreds of Antminer S9s which were also used (probably for the same duration) and they performed better.
1002  Economy / Reputation / Re: 5 Years, 5000 Merit and 7000 Posts. on: April 22, 2023, 02:37:12 AM
Five anniversary with five thousand (5,000) Merits is pretty good, that means you were able to accumulate 1000 Merits each year.  Huh in other social media platforms.

Well if you divide 5000/5 you get 1000, but that's not the case, without digging too deep into my status I am pretty sure that in some years I might have gotten 2000 merit, and in other years no more than 500, there are many factors related to how fast you can earn merit, there are certain sections where you are more likely to gain merit than others, however, chasing merit is a terrible thing to do, I post in the sections where I think my knowledge is most valuable and I think everyone should do the same, I never stopped posting in the mining section despite the fact that the only merit source there has left the forum (I am now the only merit source for that section). I know if I had posted the same number of posts elsewhere I would probably get more merit, but honestly, I don't really care because mining-related subjects are my favorite.

Also, don't get disappointed for not receiving merit for posts you made good efforts for, those posts can earn merit a few months or years after posting them, many members give up and think they will never get merit just because nobody merited their posts 2 hours after they have posted it -- it doesn't work like that, your valuable contribution will eventually earn you merit in the long term, which is why I said in the OP that you need to be consistent and patient.
1003  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Russia Becomes World’s Second-Largest Crypto Miner on: April 22, 2023, 02:23:28 AM
The consumption of a large city in Russia up to a million people is about 1000 megawatts

Ok but there is a huge difference between consumption and actual supply, of course in places where it's cold most of the time and the main source for heating is gas, the need for power is pretty limited which is pretty much the case for the majority of Russia,  but that doesn't mean the high-voltage grid is limited to that, there could be a power station able to deliver 5000MW but only 1000MW of that is used, the available 4000MW can be somehow easily deployed for mining operations.

The thing about mining is that it cares less about the location, usually, the issue with electricity is transmission rather than generation, to transfer that 4000MW to the nearest city it's going to be a very expensive job, but it's easier to bring your mining containers next to the source of power in the middle of nowhere.

Now this begs the question, is Russia limited to power generation or just transmission?
1004  Other / Meta / Re: offordscott - ban appeal on: April 20, 2023, 04:12:01 AM
Now do I know this is offord asking to be renewed I am not sure but When I get home to my pc and off this crappy ipad (4-5) hours I can contact him on other platforms.

It's him indeed, I contacted him on telegram after Bitcoin_Arena mentioned the ban in the mining section, I know for sure I am talking to the right Scott, the chat history of nearly 6 years old is still there, so there is no way I spoke to the wrong person, and I know Scott (the one I talked to on telegram) is the one who posted this topic and the one who ones the offordscott account, so all good.
1005  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Russia Becomes World’s Second-Largest Crypto Miner on: April 20, 2023, 03:35:05 AM
Cheap electricity in Russia is only in a few regions of Siberia, but the problem is that the infrastructure for mining is not developed.

Supply of electricity is the most challenging part for large mining operations, the rest of the infrastructure is only a matter of money, say you have a 10MW transformer plugged into the grid ready to deliver power, you can just buy a few plug-and-play containers and get those 10MW up and running in no time, in fact, even the transformer itself can be deployed pretty easily, it gets harder if you need to bring in those overhead power lines of 400KV or 200KV  to the location.
1006  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Biden proposed 30% mining tax. what would impact on Bitcoin mining? on: April 19, 2023, 09:36:51 PM
In Sweden, taxes will increase more. $0.0006 was a miner's paradise

Energy prices started to normalize in 2023, but the upcoming tax will likely stop any new investment in Sweden, which is currently home to about 150 megawatts (MW) of mining. The tax will increase from SEK 0.006 ($0.0006) to SEK 0.36 ($0.035) per kilowatt hour (kWh) starting July of this year, according to the financial budget published in November 2022.

Based on the average electricity prices last year, the tax hike could bring the all-in energy cost to $0.093/kWh, said Jaran Mellerud, senior analyst at mining services firm Luxor Technologies. A MicroBT Whatsminer M30s, a moderately efficient and commonly used machine, would be at break-even point given current market conditions, he said.

https://getblock.net/en/news/sweden-will-raise-the-electricity-tariff-for-miners-58-times/

Is it 3.5 cents per kilowatt hour or is it 9.3 cents? I am not sure what all-in energy cost means, if the tax is going to increase the cost from 0.6 cents to 3.5 cents where does the remaining 5.8 cents come from?

Anyway, 3.5 cents is way below average = great for mining, 9.3 cents is above average and terrible for mining.

1008  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Best place to buy a miner help on: April 19, 2023, 03:08:37 AM
Mikeywith a member at bitcointalk has access to the m50 whatsminers

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5440613.0

Actually, I have direct contact with MicroBt officials, But I still have access to all miner models including Antminer, it's just the MOQ for those is usually on the high end which is why I don't advertise those.

OP, if you are interested in Whatsminers (M30, M50) I can sell you the gears with DDP shipping to Florida -- meaning you get the miner at your address and don't have to handle any tax or papers, probably cheaper than buying them anywhere else.

If you want other models and your MOQ is 10 or above, I can also arrange for that.

canaan discounts seems to get bitmain miner hashrate for 50% pay only.. is that avalion good compared to bitmain?

Avalons used to be great gears, the new models not so, there is a good reason they sell cheaper than Antminer and Whatsminer, while I don't have any personal with the latest Avalons, the reviews on telegram are pretty terrible, I hope Avalon get their shit back together and go back to making tanks like they used to do.
1009  Other / Meta / Re: offordscott - ban appeal on: April 19, 2023, 02:06:30 AM
I have known Scott for years and I can without a doubt vouch for him, he might be unaware of the forum rules but I know for sure he wouldn't post links to malware or anything else that would get him banned, I suppose many other forum members who are active in the mining section would also vouch for him. I hope he gets his account back
1010  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Where to fix your Asic miners. on: April 18, 2023, 03:40:10 AM
If you have already communicated to him, then it's all good. I won't send a PM.

You are right, I just checked and he is indeed banned on the forum, I contact him on telegram to see if he has any idea about this, I have a feeling he was not aware about the ban at all, but let's see if he wants to come back, we can help him with the ban-appeal process, I don't want to jump to any speculation but I think his appeal will have a high chance of acceptance.
1011  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Where to fix your Asic miners. on: April 17, 2023, 05:03:12 AM
I am absolutely gutted to discover that Scott's account was permanently banned in Feb just today.

How did you know he was banned? He never mentioned anything to me so I am not aware, is it possible that he copied something from his own website and was a victim to one of the "bots" that screen the forum for plagiarism? I also doubt he would copy-paste something for the sake of posting, I'll see whats up with him and if he wants to come back and is willing to go through the process of appealing.
1012  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: MERGED MINING on: April 17, 2023, 01:36:15 AM

I know that some miners could take advantage of merged mining from a financial point of view, but isn't it a waste of submited hashes from a BTC's blockchain point of view ?

I don't understand technically how they can earn BTC knowing that their submited hashes doesn't count for the BTC block

It is not a waste of shares, shares are still created either ways, low diff shares can solve blocks for those coins but not for BTC, it is not like you know beforehand the share is going to have x diff, you are going to create it and only then know for sure.

You can read more here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5432383.msg61520701#msg61520701

@Notfuzzywarm, most large pools support merged mining, the rewards are too small to be considered, in the above link I posted my earnings on Viabtc pool.
1013  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Russia Becomes World’s Second-Largest Crypto Miner on: April 16, 2023, 04:15:38 AM
On the other hand, it may be good as a way of taking away the monopoly of the USA in mining! A bit more decentralised!

This is all that matters in my point of view, hashrate geographical centralization is the worst type of centralization we can have, most people complain about pools centralization which is pretty much harmless to a certain degree, but having all the hashrate in the same territory, subject to same laws of the same government is pretty risky, so any hashrate rising anywhere except for the U.S as of now is good, be it Russia, Japan, Pakistan or some aliens on the moon, we shouldn't care less.

1015  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What would be happened in 2024/28 BTC halving? When mining would be expensive? on: April 16, 2023, 01:57:19 AM
I think, and I could be 100% wrong, that we are going to see a drop in the small home / hobby miner.

You are more likely to be correct than wrong, in fact, as it stands right now, I doubt home miners make have any significant share of the total hashrate, I'd give them 5% if I were to be very generous, the harder things become, the lower that percentage will be regardless of the overall hashrate drop, larger cooperate miners have many advantages over the small miner.

The above changes only when a serious ban on large U.S cooperates miners happen, sometime that would wipe out nearly 50% of the total hashrate, home miners all over the world will find it easier to make a profit, however, I don't see such thing happening in the near future.
1016  Economy / Reputation / Re: 5 Years, 5000 Merit and 7000 Posts. on: April 16, 2023, 12:42:07 AM
There is no obligation to post in any dedicated thread to announce anything.

No need to delete your topic in my opinion. I agree to JollyGood here, that new topics about achievements should be eligible to create.

I was about to report the topic to the mods to get it deleted so I can post the same thing in the "dedicated topic", I assumed there was some sort of general consensus that such topics shouldn't exist at all, thank you both for clearing the confusion.

Thanks, everybody for the nice words, appreciation is important, and I appreciate all the efforts made by the fine community member to keep this place shining with knowledge and productive discussion.
1017  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why dont bitcoin hardware manufacturers re release old equip with smaller node on: April 16, 2023, 12:33:41 AM
10T\hash @ 700W would be a start.

You can almost achieve that by using the correct firmware and settings on an old S9, so this is pretty doable on S11 and the above models, but anyway, nobody should expect ASIC miner manufacturers to do what's best for them, they will do what's best for themselves, and frankly speaking, I don't see how making a dozen small miners helps with mining decentralization, let's run some random numbers.

Let's say they make a small S19 pro version that does 30th and 1000w, it will need to be more expensive in terms of $/th in the first place but let's ingore that, now let's assume 1 million home miner buys that.

30th*1,000,000 = 30EH, that's not even 10% of the total hashrate, and honestly thinking that 1 million of them will be sold is daydreaming, so there is almost nothing to gain and so much to lose.

1018  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Coinplay CONFISCATING 291mbtc of fair NBA winnings on: April 15, 2023, 03:38:38 AM
If OP is so innocent then tell him to share his recent history with sportsbook like sportsbet.io, stake or even with highly dominating fiat sportsbook like bet365. I bet he does not play in these sportsbooks.

I also bet he can't run faster than Usain Bolt but that doesn't help Coinplay in any shape or form, I don't understand anything about gambling but I read the whole thread, and both agreed to use a 3rd party "judge" and that 3rd party thought Coinplay is full of shit which automatically makes OP "innocent" in this exact incident, he could be a scammer, a serial killer or anything else, he could have abused or exploited something in Coinplay but that doesn't matter, they failed to provide the evidence to support their decision, they could not defend themselves not sure why are you doing that on their behalf.

1019  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: BITMAN T17 JUST REPAIRED ! on: April 15, 2023, 03:02:48 AM
Hello , tried as you told me , but the tabs never work !

This means it's unlikely to be EEPROM error, so it seems like you got a bad PSU or a control board, but before confirming that, you should try to flash custom firmware like this one just to confirm this isn't a compatibility issue, keep in mind that you might need to use an sd card to install the firmware if you are using the latest versions that lock the miner, post your result after testing.
1020  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WANT TO SELL BITMAIN COUPONS on: April 15, 2023, 02:24:20 AM
Escrow needed.  Please write here.

I can escrow the transaction, I have an account on Bitmain ready to receive the coupons, I am an established member in this forum, and I am an admin in the bitmain coupon group on telegram https://t.me/bitmaincoupons

I will need to read the terms of the deal, and the following must be provided.

- The BTC address of the seller and the agreed amount
- The Bitmain account email address for the receiving party

The process goes this way

1- Escrow fees sent to my address.
2- The seller sends the coupons to me, ones received, I will inform the buyer to send the funds to the seller.
2- When funds arrive (by checking on-chain data) I will transfer the coupons to the buyers account.

I bought and sold thousands of Bitmain coupons in the past, things can go wrong, and it's a sort of a hassle escrowing that, so fees will be set based on the transacted amount.

If you agree with my terms, reach out via a PM.
