1341  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: FOIPA Request to the FBI Processing on: February 09, 2013, 01:44:02 PM
Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FOIPA) sounds great. However, is it really as great as it sounds ? How many persons are responsible for finding the information that somebody requests ? And how can we trust that all information is handed over ? It seems like it's very easy for an official not to hand over some specific information because of [randomexcuse/law], and the person who initiated the FOIPA would be non the wiser. I guess there are laws governing this, but they're not worth more than the people actually processing the requests, and who's overseeing them, and do the overseers just accept any report they receive, or do they do any investigation on their own?

I feel it's a bit like the white house petitions. We care blablabla.. But in reality the most powerful party twist anything to their advantage anyway.

It's not like we're going to get the FBI papers about how they're working in regards to ongoing cases, or future cases.

Apparently there's a leaked memo from the FBI regarding bitcoin:
http://cryptome.org/2012/05/fbi-bitcoin.pdf

And as we can see from all the wikileaks cables, the Us Govt. are big liars, and they do fear the truth, how can we at all trust such a government - with anything at all ? How can we trust that they process our requests in a fair way ? Sorry, I don't trust them at all. And when you receive a response, and they say: This is what we've got, and they given you some token information, you have no way of knowing that this information is all they've got.

There *are* laws governing it, and the people that oversee it are FBI employees.

And, also, that "FBI" memo was most likely fake.  That's been discussed.

And, I mean, if you don't trust the US government enough to not 100% lie to you about a formal request, then you shouldn't live in the US.

Hah, this is funny.  The guy that he bought the alienware from scammed him, so now he's out $250.

Karma.  It's a bitch.

And I tried to "educate" him, but sadly he didn't really care.  All he could see is that he was getting a great deal on a laptop.  He didn't understand that someone paid for that.

Also, I cant think of _one_ person who would want to have their CC stolen.  I don't think personality matters too much there.

i never said he wanted to have his CC stolen, only that having it stolen may have had a positive effect on his life.

not knowing him or his situation or his personality, i can't say whether this event was bad or good.

I don't really understand what you're saying.  How can having something stolen -- not at fault to them -- have a positive effect on his life (not being sarcastic, I actually want to know what you're thinking)?

almost everything has a good and a bad side

eg. the more credit cards that are stolen, the more careful people will be with their credit card numbers

he could be doing the 'victim' a favour... but no-one other than the victim will ever know whether this is the case

you are simply speculating that this is bad from his point of view, when in reality you don't know him, his personality, etc.

life-changing events can also change people's lives in a positive way, despite how unrelated third-parties may judge the event from the outside.
Well, it's not as if the victim had to have been stupid with their CC info.  Many credit card thefts are at no fault to the victim.

Also, I cant think of _one_ person who would want to have their CC stolen.  I don't think personality matters too much there.
1345  Other / Off-topic / Someone just told me this today... WTF on: February 07, 2013, 11:57:46 PM
A person (who shall remain unnamed) in my high school told me that they bought an alienware laptop from someone (worth around $2k) for $250.  Immediately, alarm bells went off, so I asked him how he got it for so cheap.  What he said disgusted me:

He bought it from a guy in Italy who told him that it was with a stolen credit card.

I dont get this.  How can someone morally accept that they are blatantly defrauding some poor unsuspecting person?  I mean, I get it, Amazon.com will probably take the heat for it, but I still don't get it.

How the hell can people think that this is OK?  And, I mean, the guy was 14 or 15 years old.  At such a young age, buying a laptop with a stolen credit card.

I worry about the next generation of humanity.

Did this turn out to be dank? And regardless, can someone who's dropped acid before tell me if this is an example of the side effects?

I've never taken acid, although I did purchase a microdot once for five bucks, but was too scared to do it. So I sold it to a close friend. I asked him how it was, and he replied with, "Groovy!"
LOL.

1348  Economy / Services / Re: Looking for people to store some of the forum's money on: February 06, 2013, 10:49:26 PM
I think I might have a good suggestion on what to do with the forums funds. Why not set up a program where there is a communal pool of coins that members can borrow coins from with limits of course. Say you take the funds and do micro loans with a small interest rate available to all members of the community in good standing. Then have the limits raised for members with good credit. I say allow people to borrow the amount that they have contributed to the fund ,but let everyone in at a certain level. For example if you borrowed 10 and paid back 11 (or the equivalent in usd) then your limit would be raised to 11. The forums money can work for everyone. Before you trash my suggestion or say it is not possible ask yourself how it would be possible. Suggestions are welcome

No one like this? You are all talking about how much fees you will take ( this is donated right?) This would be the most decentralized solution and the fund would grow not shrink. If you are worried about trust this is the best way to hedge against lost and theft. With no risk. If you only lend what has been paid in if someone walks they can only take what they put in.
It's a really stupid idea, sublime.  Why would theymos want to loan out the forum's money to random people on the web?  I don't think donators would want that to be done with their money.

On another note: I would also be willing to have one of the multisig keys.

FYI: It looks like 5dimes accounts can be funded with Visa cards, so these transfers might be reversible.

And, on another note, how do we know this is the same guy on that forum?

(Sorry for being so skeptical, btw.  I'm sure the guy is legit, but I just want to make sure.)
1352  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Any game developers out there? Developing next step of online gambling on: February 03, 2013, 08:34:19 PM
OK, I'll bite. If it's open source, then why not just tell us what it's about? Is it a front-end for the next generation of casino slot machines to sell to Indian casinos?

In such a rapidly developing community someone might take the idea and finish it before I have the chance to.
Surely that's a good thing? That's pretty much the spirit and purpose of open source software.

Sounds more like you want to call it open source but dual license for personal vs commercial use in order to make some money. Of course, this is fine, many projects do this, but in this case, there would be no interest in using for personal use - who's going to set up a gambling site that they run on their local machine to gamble against themselves? As soon as you allow others to gamble, it becomes commercial.
The other problem if you try to dual license is that the open source libraries that you use in building this project may no allow relicensing.
Just because he's planning to open source it after release doesn't mean he doesn't have a valid reason of not wanting to release the idea now. Open source later doesn't mean he can't make money off of it. And just because it's open source doesn't mean the only way he can make money is by licensing the software. Apparently you don't have much of a grasp of how software development works.
I don't think he meant that OP CAN'T make money off of the software, he just meant that it ruins some of the purpose of being open source to begin with.

1355  Economy / Lending / Re: Consortium to buy Avalon ASIC on: February 03, 2013, 12:03:27 AM
Do you want your own an Avalon but are a little short?  I have a deal for that.

1.  It is -2°F outside right now.  Waste heat is valuable.  It will be cool until May or so.
2.  There is a pay address for a consortium:  17Pq8oPtk8rikxZhF1wENFqR9YtDyLyr8E
3.  Send BTC to that address.  I'll buy integer units while I can, first signed, first ordered.  Be generous with miner fees, if you are so inclined.
4.  After integer number of Avalons have been purchased, there may be funds left over.  I will choose whether to add my own funds for an additional Avalon purchase, or to return them to you within 48 hours, no interest.
5.  For each Avalon ASIC purchased, I own 10%, the other 90% is pro-rated among the accounts that paid in.
6.  I will deduct electricity cost off the top, using the agreed figure for consumption and the cost from my electric bill, highest tier paid first.
7.  I will split the net Bitcoins.  This will be approximately each month, the exact date is not specified.  If it is important, we can specify it in forthcoming discussion.

Yeah, wtf?

THIS PERSON OWES ME 2 BTC.

He is a scammer who ran after he lost his bet.

DO NOT TRADE WITH THIS PERSON.

I did not rate him because I don't like his personality, I rated him because he is a SCAMMER.

Update: This problem is over.  We've made up.
