[ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage

I have an idea I believe will bring A LOT of people to Sia... I would have made this site myself if I possessed the technical website building skills.

The idea is to create a website similar to www.icefilms.info
where people can go to lookup ascii codes for the movies they want to watch. With Sia.. no one could "take down" the files due to copyright infringement/etc... Once uploaded, you could keep the file online without having to constantly update the download link due to copyright infringement.

Best part, the only thing on the website itself would be the ascii codes and nothing else that the companies could stake a claim to.

We would very quickly become the number one "new-torrent" client (because it's convenient as F*** not to have to constantly update download links).

Anyone who actually reads and gives this some thought will know that this idea has huge potential.
icefilms makes about 3K a day from advertising alone... if someone builds this site they could really reap the benefits.

This is a call to arms for those who support Sia and its' future, if you possess website building skills, you should totally jump on this... (and maybe give me some credit too  ).

but that www.icefilms.info is nothing but a malware and virus pit   just got out of there in a nick of time and managed to escape the IE frame pop ups lol.... be careful what you click on, even the legit looking shit is malware.

Not as easily. We would need to write a crawler. We are reasonably confident that the number is over 100 though - there are over 100 people connected to the bootstrap node. It's pretty reasonable to assume that not everyone is connected to the bootstrap node.

The problem is that ascii files expire whereas bitorrent files don't. If file uploads to the sia network were permanent then i would consider this. Also its hard to convince people to pay for there downloads when they can just torrent them for free, it would be a premium service but as i said the problem is with the centralized control of the files. One person has the ability to take them down and they are not permanent like torrent files.

I see sia more as a dropbox alternative then as a replacement for BitTorrent.

Hey guys. It is with regret that I say that we aren't going to be doing anymore miner releases or patches in the near future, and we are dropping support for miner binaries.

We've decided on this because we've been spending too much time trying to get the miners to compile, and too much time dealing with bugs and dependencies we don't understand. Rather than try to get into the world of cross-compiling opencl, we're going to be spending our time over the next few weeks working on what really counts - decentralized storage.

The code for the miners is still open source, and it works well on Linux. Furthermore, linux is a free OS and runs on most architectures. We're sorry that mining isn't highly accessible to everyone, but it's something that is currently out of reach for the Sia core team. I do believe that others however are interested in working on Sia miners. We are willing to help anyone who wishes to release their own open source miners and mining pools, we're just not going to be making them ourselves during the forseeable future.

Sorry for the disappointing news. On the other hand, going forward we're going to be focusing a lot more on the storage components of Sia. We're excited for what's next, and hope you like what we're working on.

I respect your decision in regard to the miners...  BUT...  don't get too comfortable with a couple of greedy miners telling you it is a good choice.

The longer it takes for dependable miners and/or pools...  the worst for Sia (on all levels).

I do believe that others however are interested in working on Sia miners. We are willing to help anyone who wishes to release their own open source miners and mining pools, we're just not going to be making them ourselves during the forseeable future.

Outsource the work...  don't leave it to chance.

Siacoin is about decentralized storage and not about mining.
The miners are securing the network and keeping it up.
For the actualy development of the coin and of the storage feature, there is no difference on who mines which coins.
As long as there are no big monopolies - who cares?
Whoever is able to read the sia source code and to optimize the miner can do so and will be able to make profit of that - thats a fact that wont change - that fact does not depend on the devs ALSO developing a miner.

I don't mine it since I get X10 slower rates than others and my chances of getting a block is too small in solo mining, and even if there was a pool why should I mine when others get much higher hashrates?
The price would also be evaluated by the mining profitability, meaning , less miners lower hashrate lower price.. everything is connected.

same for me, actually mining is in my case senseless, also i tried the new miner 1.0.2 but it's not really faster for amd cards (linux)

First, I understand where Taek and the team are coming from. Making time for mining software will take away from the storage development.  It is open source I agree, but I have a funny feeling anyone skilled enough to develop a faster more effective miner, will not be sharing it with the rest of us, just my opinion

With that said, it will create "SIA coin cartels" who more than likely control a vast amount of that wealth and will set the price overall, much like the days OPEC etc.   But as it stands, using SIA coins you will spend a lot less than actual money for equal amounts of storage, plus everyone will have a chance to earn SIA from hosting, albeit there is issues that need resolved that way.

This is why I will be glad to see Taek and team focus more on getting a widely usable wallet, so everyone can begin storing data and make some money that way. I think all the large coin holders realize the price of SIA will have a cap in price in order to remain competitive, and an attractive alterative for storage.

Plus miners now, will have more competition once hosting really kicks in and people start earning their own coins. And people hosting will eventually take control of the price and demand to some degree as they can set there own price per GB/month and so on. SIA will have and will grow into its own eco system.

Mining is in my blood, ya I wish we had a better AMD miner! but? it is what it is.  

PS: Let me also add this: All those large coin holders risk becoming bag holders if we don't hurry up and get a viable, easy to use" working wallet into the hands of millions
