my secondary account.  I am philipma1957

gear came .  fees for 2 units = 89 usd

could be worse.  I think I won't ask many questions for the time being.
That is on par with what I paid today to clear my single B3 miner. I asked the UPS agent for a breakdoen and it was a total of $46.86  mostly Customs duty and something like $3-4 for the UPS brokerage fee to process the Customs duty and import clearance.

Either the import thresholds have changed or the miner is mis-marked for shipping code.

I'd have to look up the exact code but is supposed to be for:
Electronic equipment, computer, no terminal or display
or something like that.

It also took an odd hop in Japan -- usual route is Shenzhen > Osaka > Anchorage > etc.
This time it arrived in Narita first but then left from Osaka. Er? A bit of a trek there.

FYI, I wrote to Bitmain about this and they claim that they haven't changed the shipping codes. The implication is that it's the dollar figure triggering the difference, or UPS has gotten gready.

The fact that every S9 was in excess of $2k while every S7 was under ($1.8k I think) leads me to think that we're in that gray area that Phil indicated where anything north of $2k might be interpreted as commercial and hence subject to duty.

I'm going to take this up with UPS, but I doubt it will change anything.

Bitmain needs to understand that the $2k threshold has an impact on the US market. They should return to pricing that's more sane.

They've been especially greedy this time. They probably would have made much more money if they had priced the S9 lower, assuming that they could fill the unit demand.

Has anyone tried DHL? I know UPS and FedEX are charging.
i think dhl charges a lot more to ship it.

All my shipments from BMT and AliExpress to SG are with DHL - very fast, minimal paperwork and all web & SMS automated.

I just pay the Goods & Services Tax (GST) upon arrival to my doorsteps - about 7% of declared value.

From Amazon, I used Fedex and UPS before but too many paperwork and delays. Some UPS packages did not arrive!

Changed to DHL and no more issues.

how long does it take for you to ROI?

seems the weather is nice in Japan this time of year so we will make two port visits there
then we will go back to Shenzen, because we forgot some of the other passengers, then off
we go to Korea and a quick visit to the DMZ and wave to some guards, lets take a guess at
what our next stop on the magical mystery tour will be.

All i wanted was a trip on the Rocky Mountaineer and a nice holiday in some cold location
in Newfoundland or similar, to be hosted by a caring and diligent host for a good 12 month
sabbatical

I must contact my travel agent and see what kind of trip this is.

All jokes aside, I have never had any of these issues getting miners sent to Australia,
with both UPS and DHL in the past, but this is really turning me off UPS

My S9 Batch 2 has arrived...

So far so good... It's quite warm here atm.

(pic above)

In the Midwest here so we get a lot of different temperatures.  So far I have had good luck to seems to be able to handle the summer heat which is good.  In my mining area I use air from outside push it through miners with big CFM fan's and exhaust the hot air.

The S9 has done very good with the varying weather.   This week I could have high of low 90's F which is hotter then I like to the lows in the 60's F.   So it is handling  a variety of weather good.

Hopefully by time of the days-end pickup it will have cleared so I can get it today vs Monday.  Grrrrr..........

While we are on the subject of cooling. Anyone tried immersion cooling? Bitfury is getting phenomenal increases. Mineral oil seems inexpensive. 3M make some great but expensive products. IBM even does it now. Has anyone tried it?

Mineral oil and 3M's Novec fluids are totally different things. The higher viscosity and much poorer thermal transfer properties of mineral oils means that great care has to be taken to ensure enough heat is pulled fast enough from the chips. With 3M's thermal xfr fluids, they are thinner than water so flow very well (rather like butane in a lighter) and more to the point, when in the phase-change range (boiling) heat xfr ability goes through the roof because the fluid in contact with the heat source wants very much to stay at the phase-change temp.

That said, oil is still a tempting idea.

I am thinking about trying mineral oil with a s7. Using a radiator for cooling and a high flow pump.

Don't pump mineral oil, mineral oil doesn't likes being pumped. Instead, use 2 phase cooling, with a cool radiator inmersed in oil with the cards.

The results are so-so, and resaleability of the cards goes down dramatically, although YMMV.

Mine showed up today. Mining away right meow.
Mine sort of did...
UPS showed up at work to drop it off but... It was still tagged as COD for the customs/brokerage fee despite me paying UPS with a CCard around noon on Thursday.

I have the receipt and UPS clearance conf# but he said since their delivery system hasn't released it yet if it clears he'll be back around our normal pickups time to drop it off, if not, should be Monday.

5:00p came and went, no miner  Cry
WTF is wrong with UPS's accounting systems?Huh

Too late now but you would get a refund if you double paid so probably would've been worth it.

Similar thing happened to me with an S7.  I got them to waive the fee after a half dozen phone calls but the driver didn't see that in whatever system he could see so he insisted on payment to leave it.  I paid him and a month later they sent me a refund check.

Yeah, I coulda. Even brought my checkbook yesterday when it was supposed to show up before UPS decided it should take the scenic route. But it dinna show in the morning so I used their phone ccard payment. Nice agent btw. Anywho, just said screw it and them figure it out by Monday.

Only real significant bitch is that I was going to take my last 4 s5's at work offline to send to Sidehack for his Compacs and replace with the s9 still coming out ahead by >6th with 1/2 the power use.

Since early 2014 I gotten around 80 miners in total from Bitmain, this make only the 4th time I had to pay.

So, methinks something in the Customs rules deciding business (fees) or personal might have changed. Or, their monitoring/tracking software is now looking at how many/total value of goods you get in a month or so.

The IRS does the same regarding the banks having to report deposits over $10k. They now track it on a per-month basis and if a business it making a lot of deposits just under 10k the Feds get -- interested shall we say, and start talking to each other. In Michigan alone there have been several arrests and property/money seizures of folks running rural small business like a hardware store. Later thrown out of court but - good luck getting property/money back. t is often held for ages as 'possible money laundering evidence'.

So I paid the stupid duty to UPS (I figure I can contest it after the fact) and got my B3 S9 today. I deployed it at our data center powering it with a 2880 watt PSU from Finksy. Worked out of the box as advertised with no surprises.

It worked so well in fact that I tried bumping up the frequency to 650 (remember that B3 has default frequency of 550 and a correspondingly lower advertised hash rate). Hardware errors went from 0 to a manageable 0.0002% after a couple of hours. That boosted the hash rate from 12-ish THs to 13.6. Definitely worth it.

Temps are pretty cool since this is an air-conditioned DC. But it's interesting that each successive chain increases in temp:

ChainHWTemp(PCB)Temp(Chip)
184982
235383
3335890

Not surprisingly the hottest board has the worst hardware error rate. This seems to match what others have found regarding inconsistent cooling and airflow to the boards.

But all in all the results are not too bad.
