If you want to send the coins you can still use MyEtherWallet and choose the ETC option.

Just start geth, look at the "Last block" line, and compare the number to ETH or ETC block explorer.

Edit: it should also say something like "Geth is currently configured to OPPOSE the DAO hard-fork!" but still make sure to double check the block height.

Solo mining at this stage is pointless unless you have several gigs of equipment laying around
