There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

win or linux?
I'm connected to the network but not downloading any blocks?

Windows 7. I tried deleting everything in appdata/roaming aside from my conf and wallet. I left it over night with 10 connections and it's still 42 weeks behind just like it was when I started it

I had that issue on one of my Win7 machines a couple of weeks ago. I solved it with brute force, rather than finesse. Unless/until you get better advice, consider (in no particular order), after making suitable backups:

Let it build from scratch, including a brand new wallet, then overwrite the new wallet with your existing (backed up) wallet copy, if appropriate. (Is the wallet empty anyway?) I found that some of my old wallet backups were not reliable, for no obvious reason, while others were. I think with hindsight that some were made during a long-ago dead-end fork.

Try the Upgrade QT Client tab in the Wallet window.

Try the Rebuild Blockchain tab in the Wallet window.

Try any of the rebuild tricks you might do with your other coins. GRC is similar yet different - there is an MSI file to try, for example.

Try one or more of these a second time. I know it sounds like superstition, but sometimes it seems one attempt will fix something and the next will do the actual rebuild, sort of like "when in doubt, reboot Win7".

Oh - Are you seeing the Mining Module window? If so, what version number shows (near the lower pie chart)? Mine shows version 168 at the moment.

Edit: afterthought - is there anything interesting in your log file? Any clues there?

You're in luck, there is a good feature implemented to cure a problem like this.  From the wallet click "Rebuild Block Chain", then click second option "Download Blocks".  Let it restart and you should be good to go!

I don't know enough to help with your specific question, but if you ask it in the technical support thread you are likely to get some help:

Hey,

I've given up trying to get my GridCoin client to connect (just getting "no block sources" or something). Tried various different addnodes in the conf file. Just getting connections failed in the logs. (Other alt clients working fine.)

Does anyone know a way to get my gridcoins into an exchange from just the wallet.dat / private keys?

Or any trusted member want to receive my GRC wallet and give me some BTC in return? (I only had 29000 GRC, ~0.29 BTC, so am happy to risk this..)

Hi,

This was on Windows 7, I installed the version from the main gridcoin.us

Do you have any latest seed nodes I can try?

(btw, that forum does not let me register "You are not permitted to register a user account with this community.")

Thanks. They don't seem to work for me. Tried pinging a few, don't respond either. I guess you have some new nodes cached somewhere or something.

(well, looking in the log supernode.gridcoin.us actually connected, but then disconnected after a version check message...)

Anyway, I can't be bothered wasting any more time on this. If there's anyone willing, I'll send you my wallet.dat and you can keep 50% of the 29000 GRC, sending the rest to my exchange account. Preferably somebody somewhat trusted Wink
