so whats the consensus on a PSU for the ants / what's the most popular choice...? what sort of wattage do you need for factory and / or OC'd units...?

If you have some spare time for modding, server psu is the cheapest choice that you can find (Dell PSUs are the most used)

i really don't have any time to dedicate to modding... just looking for a cheap PnP... what wattage is recommended for factory or OC'd ants...?

It's not so much wattage, it's amperage on the 12V rail.  An OC'd S1 uses about 32-33amps on a gold PSU on a 115v line.  Make sure whatever you get has enough juice on the 12V line to run as many Ants as you are looking for, and you should be fine.

M

so if i were looking @ something like this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139060 would that cover the power source needed to run a factory ant? what about an OC'd ant?

I can't tell.  There are no specs about the 12V rail.  I'd proceed with caution.

If you intend to drive more than one ant, and are prepared to spend $100 on a decent PSU, consider this one:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182063

Will drive 3xOCd S1s with room to spare.

I used for varius months a corsair cx500m with a single, not OCed antminer s1: it's working flawlessy without downtime or problems of any kind. It's also one of the cheapest PnP PSU that you can actually find.

Guys, please. Wht's the point paying for psu almost 230$ when any decent server IBM psu will do the job.
on 2000W IBM server psu you can run easily 4 OC ants and still will be enough power.

Threads about mod is on BTCtalk and its not that really difficult.
You can have more for less easily.

unfortunatly jewgalo is searching for PnP PSU, we all know that they are a lot more expensive compared to a modded server psu Wink

I agree, but in mining at least for me most important is to cut the cost's and maximize profit.
But anyway, there are lot's of corsair cheap psu(cx 500 modular or normal).cx500 will do the job even for OC miners.
I had them at the beginning, but then i was tired of paying like 45gbp per new psu.

Once i had my hands on poweredge 2950 i had massive smile. This cost me 10Gbp per one.Pci-e cost no more than 5.5 Gbp and 15 minutes of my time to make it --Plug and play
How big difference is that.

3 PSU = 3 power cords, 3 boxes, and extra cables

If you're going to do $100 a PSU, the one above will save you $70 right out of the box.

However, as others have said, there are cheaper ways to do it.

Ah.  I was going to say, at 115v, 4 S1s OCd will blow your 15A breaker.  But I see you aren't talking about the US.

so whats the consensus on a PSU for the ants / what's the most popular choice...? what sort of wattage do you need for factory and / or OC'd units...?

If you have some spare time for modding, server psu is the cheapest choice that you can find (Dell PSUs are the most used)

i really don't have any time to dedicate to modding... just looking for a cheap PnP... what wattage is recommended for factory or OC'd ants...?

It's not so much wattage, it's amperage on the 12V rail.  An OC'd S1 uses about 32-33amps on a gold PSU on a 115v line.  Make sure whatever you get has enough juice on the 12V line to run as many Ants as you are looking for, and you should be fine.

so if i were looking @ something like this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139060 would that cover the power source needed to run a factory ant? what about an OC'd ant?

I can't tell.  There are no specs about the 12V rail.  I'd proceed with caution.

If you intend to drive more than one ant, and are prepared to spend $100 on a decent PSU, consider this one:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182063

Will drive 3xOCd S1s with room to spare.

M

can't shell out that much thats for sure... i'd rather not hook up more then one ant to one psu... so i would need about 6-8 psu's total... anything recommendations in the $100 range if possible would be appreciated...

3 PSU = 3 power cords, 3 boxes, and extra cables

If you're going to do $100 a PSU, the one above will save you $70 right out of the box.

However, as others have said, there are cheaper ways to do it.

M

Here is the one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IBM-74P4453-Bladecenter-E-2000W-Power-Supply-zj-/261410878512?pt=US_Network_Switch_Power_Supplies&hash=item3cdd4d7430

Price is so low its almost stealing.
Cables will be near nothing and only time to mod this one. This one will run 4 miners OC.

Consider the efficiency of these units 70-75%?   and you can calculate power savings 6 months or a year down the road if you are using to mine btc 24 hours a day.

Ive not used that specific unit but I haven't come across a server grade psu made in the last 3-5 years that has been below 88% efficiency personally.

As we know psu highest efficiency is most likely at 50% load and not as efficient at 20% or 100% load.

You can see here alot of comparison of name brand server psu:  http://www.plugloadsolutions.com/80PlusPowerSupplies.aspx

You will notice the majority is at 80 Plus Bronze 85% and less.  And at lower load 20% or highest load 100% Brozne 85 is only about 81-82%

The second highest category is regular 80 Plus only 80% efficiency.

This is not even including the many many server psu on the market that dont even have a 80 Plus rating (probably Chinese, or fake) :  so they are much less and into the 60-79% range obviously.

You are correct I tested my Dell server PSUs and they use 860-870watts per 2 S1s at the wall. This is the exact same as my thermaltake bronze PSU. My EVGA and Corsair Platinum use exactly 800watts at the wall for the same 2 miners. Doing the math the difference per month in electricity would take a long time to offset the initial savings savings of buying a server PSU.

The 60 watts savings for the Gold psu per day at .16 per kwh running 24/7 for a year would save $84

For platinum about $125 a year.

Amazon for $170 Platinum Corsair 860  http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Professional-860-Watt-Platinum-AX860/dp/B00A0HZMKG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1400395186&sr=8-1&keywords=corsair+platinum+860

So $45 for plat psu 860 watts and great resale value I think is good deal
