Should I be concerned if my hashrate on the webpage is off by a factor of 10?

It depends on what your speed actually is, and how long you've been mining.  The averaging window is normally very accurate on any worker that has at least 50 MH/s after a few minutes (and on faster workers it generally gets very close in even less time).

If you're mining through GPUMAX, your speed estimate can be completely unreliable if GPUMAX is issuing work.  No pool can really give you a good speed estimate when GPUMAX is on and only a few shares leak back to the pool.  Similarly, if you're mining on a very slow rig (< 25 MH/s), the speed estimate is basically useless for you because if you're that slow there isn't any reliable way to estimate your speed.

In any other situation, you probably have something going wrong with your miner.  The speed estimates have been -very- accurate for miners since the updates last month, and only in the scenarios mentioned above should it be very far off of the mining software reported speed.

Thats cool yea i got the new dns also i just recently switched full time to btcguild i get better payputs here then abc even tho they pay higher per share but btcguild my hash stays higher and peaks much higher then it ever did at abc and you guys dont charge anything to cashout like they do.

I'm an ABC miner that just recently switched full time to BTC Guild as well. So far, I like BTC Guild better and my miners aren't dealing with connection issues/work distribution issues I was having over at ABC. I'll 2nd that my hash rate is reported higher and peaks higher here compared to ABC as well. It also read higher over at EMC while I was there for a short stint.

My Accepted (%) is crazy good also (99.95%) for btc and (99.30%) for namecoin lol dont think it could get much better for btc not worried about namecoin they arent worth much lol takes like 555 coins to make 1 btc would take me a entire year at their current prices to make it lol.

Private DNS is still available, I just removed the bold link at the top.  You can always go back and reference it from the sidebar, which is bolded to stick out.  No more users are being added at this time to keep the private server stable.

Once the new protocol is ready for being pushed live (testing still slated for Sept. 1), I will be adding two new servers.  One will be a private server designated for the new protocol, and the other will be a public server for the new protocol.

Will we still be able to use services like GPUMAX with the new protocol? Also, will we be able to use mining software like cgminer/bfgminer?

GPUMAX probably won't add native support for it, it's a complete rewrite of how mining works (no JSON, no HTTP).  Once I have positive testing results I'm going to make a large post of precise details and assist in getting cgminer/bfgminer updated to support it.

However, the first phase of testing will use a special proxy (written in Python) that people run on their own system (or server).  With this proxy, you can point your current miners (running any software you want) at the proxy, and the proxy connects to BTC Guild with the new protocol.  It becomes a sort of local pool server for your miners.  You'll get almost all the benefit of the new protocol, just a slightly worse latency due to connecting through another computer before BTC Guild.  It will be a vast improvement over the current mining protocol either way.

GPUMAX miners -may- be able to use it, by running the proxy on a remotely accessible machine, and pointing their GPUMAX backup pool to that machine.

Looking forward to helping test. With as much THash/s this is going to be coming online in the next couple months, it will be good to get this next advancement in pool side technology moving forward. It would suck to receive 6 or more BFL SC Singles in my farm and no where to mine. Smiley (Reliably)

Testing of the new protocol will probably not be ready by the 1st like I had hoped.  The person working on the proxy for old mining software hasn't been online in a few days, and there's still two pieces left of the new pool to complete which probably won't be completed until he returns.

I've got an entire protocol specification document ready for mining software developers, I'm just waiting until we have a working poold/proxy so that any software developers wanting to support the new protocol will have a way to test the updates on a server which supports it.

EDIT:  Still hoping for the first week of September though.

In the past 24 hours or so, cgminer seems to periodically tell me there's issues with mine3 not providing enough work. My hashrate reported on the website dropped by a few hundred which made me look into it.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with mine3 or mine2 today? Or is it just me?

I'm going to do a restart across the 11 load balancing servers, which should fix the issues.  The pool has gained a significant amount of speed since changing where the LBs were hosted.  I may throw up a few more temporary servers today and add them to the DNS round robin.

The load balancing servers and backends have been restarted, hopefully this will fix the issues for now.  The new mining protocol will hopefully begin testing in the next few days.  If everything works as it should, this should completely eliminate performance issues even if the pool is at 1 PH/s (1000 TH/s).

Well, when BFL  starts shipping in spec hardware on schedule we should break 1PH/s pretty quickly

This is not some pseudoeconomic post-modern Libertarian cult, it's an un-led, crowd-sourced mega startup organized around mutual self-interest where problems, whether of the theoretical or purely practical variety, are treated as temporary and, ultimately, solvable.

Yeah, I doubt it'll happen as well.  But we've done a lot of inspection on the new protocol.  The new protocol is push-based, so the miner is never asking for work, the pool just provides it.  At the "recommended" settings, a miner would have to have 18 Exahash/sec (18,000,000 TH/s) to exhaust the work provided once per minute.  Faster speeds can also be adopted, and would require no additional bandwith or processing power on the pool or miner side.  All that and you only have to deal with a 600-1000 byte work payload every minute and ~30 bytes per share submission.

When the new protocol goes live, miners on the new protocol will run on a dynamically adjusted difficulty, with a target rate of no more than 1 share/5 seconds.  Any pool that adopts the new protocol could handle this however they want though, use definable, pool wide setting, or dynamic.  Since BTC Guild is PPS only, this will simply be recorded as multiple shares at once.  If your miner is adjusted to difficulty=4, your shares will count as 4 at a time.

Is there a document available on the new protocol? Are you interested in other pools implementing it?

There will be full documentation posted next week when a proxy exists so developers (pools and mining software) can work with it.  I've been working on this with ArtForz for a few months now, and the only reason nothing is posted yet is we want a working implementation available.  It'll be open for any additional features to be suggested as being part of the official specification, though it's unlikely any changes will be needed since this is purely a pool<->miner protocol.

You can message me on IRC and I can go over some details now if you'd like.  Hopefully this will get picked up by other pools once we have proof that it works, and that it can scale to ANY speed (at least any speed that wouldn't break the Bitcoin protocol entirely).

I'll be interested in reading a dumbed down version of how it works and how it differs from the current protocol - when the new protocol is up and running and when you have time.

Other pools might make a change if enough miners can see a benefit in the new protocol.
