Sorry to ask, but are you sure? I've read everywhere that it is not the case. Even a few posts ago in this topic: Flash those suckers to 8GH/s and then tell us what the temps are! Still trying to get that Atmel AVR Dragon. It's not quite accessible here in singapore... looks like a £1 notebook cooler underneath those bad boys i assume its blowing down? Good eyesight but it's suppose to blow upwards instead. Didn't switch that on because RPi doesn't have enough power once I plug that in... wont it end up fighting the fans blowing air down? or are you trying to get it to blow the cooler air from underneath upwards? i have one blowing over my USB ASICs atm

I have 9 Japs to testify. Is interesting that so far I've seen several posts (including yours) arguing about both methods (fan blowing down VS fan blowing up) and claiming that the opposite method is the wrong one. I remember this one for example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=221413.msg2335576#msg2335576I think is safe to say that BFL done their fair share of tests with both methods and decided to go with the best one.I might test it myself, but I don't really want to stop them hashing right now, and besides, they are all below 40C with the case on.

That's right. But let's stop and think for a while: I've seen very stupid cooling solutions, including BFL's take on that matter. It's quite well known that cool air is heavier than hot air. Hot air always flows naturally upwards. The Jalapeño pushes cold air from the top and pushes it downwards to the other side's venting. But that's not even close to smart... When my Jalapeño arrives, I intend to remove the case (and fan, possibly) and create a vertical wind tunnel with two cones, to create a Venturi effect on the heat sink. The fan will move to the top cone, forcing the air out or to the bottom cone, forcing the air in (haven't decide or tested yet). If possible, I'll have the hot air exhaust to the exterior using an H pipe chimney: I think this is going to be one of those 'sounds better in theory' kind of things. Still give it a go and report back with pics of your crazy creation, of course! I suspect that the restriction of flow from the pipe head alone will cancel out most of the hot buoyant air effect you are trying to exploit. I would confidently say that it WILL have some airflow but the question becomes "is it sufficient?". I am not sure about the H-chimney design, I think the two 90 degree bends the flow would have to make would limit the momentum and flow rate of the rising air. I would almost bet BTC that a single straight tube of constant diameter would be better. EDIT: I re-read your idea about putting the fan on it too. I was thinking you meant it would work passively. I suspect you will still find that having this contraption with the fan(s) on top will still be worse than just having the fan next to the heatsink as normal. Where are all the process engineers / industrial chemists to model this scenario for us??? Do we have to bribe them with BTC lol? Yes, the last question is the right point. One of the properties of the Venturis effect is exactly the thermal properties of the low pressure and air flow acceleration. In short, by accelerating the air on the constriction, the pressure drops making it more permeable to absorb heat. You see this effect exactly on any Kelvin's refrigeration cycle where you compress the gas (R14, R15, R134a, etc) before it reaches the condenser pressurized, absorbing the heat inside the chamber. When it expands it cools down but the thermal energy is still the same, so we need the radiator. Since I'm going to use air, the properties are quite a lot different, specially on the Thermal Capacitance side, but the principle remains. So that's the correct question: is it sufficient? The H is to be put in the house exterior. We use them quite a lot here in our houses chimneys because it has two advantages: the Venturi effect (again) sucking the flow from inside the pipe and no water in. The H is mounted vertically. The one I showed is for vertical mount but there are others for wall mount. EDIT: I re-read your idea about putting the fan on it too. I was thinking you meant it would work passively. The fan is just to accelerate the air flow, somehow, not sure if in the intake or in the exhaust. Where are all the process engineers / industrial chemists to model this scenario for us??? Do we have to bribe them with BTC lol?
I never finished university in Mechanics Engineering but it was a problem with maths and some Vapor Pressure charts in Thermodynamics :-p But hey! Here I am!! Considering the size of the bfl units I could easily design and 3D print the ducting needed for this. You'll never imagine how I'd love to have money to buy a 3d printer...!!! But I'll start by rapid prototyping in the old fashioned cardboard and MacGuiver's duct tape! Creating special cooling devices for Jalapenos seems overkill to me. As long as you keep them in a proper place they stay cool enough. The ones I keep still in their cases are barely warm (40c), while those without cases are practically cold to touch (35-37C). Sure, place them in the wrong place and they will soon overheat. However, Inaba said at one point: I would be very interested to see a water block that covers chips, 1850 and mosfets. I think it would change the nature of performance quite a bit and it's been something I've been itching to try, but haven't had any time to even start on some sort of project like that.
I have cooled the mosfets and 1850 with a block of ice and it does increase stability, but it was pretty ghetto, so doing a proper coverage WB would probably yield even better results.

My latest rig: - 2000 Kh Litecoin (2 5970s and 1 5850) - 29 Gh Bitcioin (about 84 ASICMINER Block Erupters) Already sold half of my Block Erupters pictured above... I only got to mine on most of them for half a day. My fingers still hurt from opening/closing 80+ ASICMINER gift boxes, then taking it out of the bag, then opening the case, then prying the miner out... geeez. Then putting them back together.. don't get me started, I feel sorry for the people in China that assemble the packaging. Not to mention all the USB COM port conflicts and Windows making me try every which way to hook the USB hubs together until all the sudden in magically worked. I'd suggest only chaining a maximum of 2-3 hubs before starting a new chain straight out of the motherboard/pcie usb expansion ports. I did eventually get all 84 USB miners recognized and mining 330+ Mh each. I'm going to miss those guys.. But when I can sell them for $145+ on Ebay a piece and with Bitcoin being down right now in value, I'd be silly not to just sell them now and be happy with that and reinvest back into good ole BTC. So true lol. I keep a stock pile of Zip ties around in case I get in the mood to do a little rearranging/house cleaning. I think every GPU in my farm has at least 2-3 zip ties each in some shape, form, or fashion.
