Other than looking here, how does someone know if they hit a block? (I know they could check their address at blockchain, I mean is there any other way?)
If you are using Windows you get a popup if your wallet is open, and there is no better feeling than seeing that little window!!

I'm a smalltime miner, mining bitcoin with cgminer. Will this be the best place to solo mine for bitcoin? I want profit from what I mine, not try to hit the lotto. Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place. Would be greatly appreciated if I'm being pointed in the right direction

Please let me know if I'm in the wrong place. Would be greatly appreciated if I'm being pointed in the right direction Solo mining with a low hashrate is "trying to hit the lotto", no matter where you do it. You, literally, can't solo mine anywhere and get paid for every hash you produce.

I'm really new at this. Is it possible in any way with a PC, to farm BTC and get rewarded step by step and not only if I "Hit the lottery"?

What is your mining hardware? CPU/GPU/ASIC? Many pools won't let you mine BTC with anything other than ASICs. If you are using GPUs you may want to consider mining ALT coins and trading them for BTC.

No, the market for PCs was saturated years ago, then came GPUs, then ASICs. With the rate of ASICs vs the rate of a PC, you can't even find a pool where a PC would pay any measurable amount of BTC in a year's time. Edit: Or what marty said.

What kind of software would you recommend and what currency with this setup?
At the risk of sounding harsh, I'd recommend a new setup. With specs like that, you're likely to not find anything that pays you more than you pay in electric to do it.
