1281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't buy bitcoin because it won't be fine on: October 31, 2018, 10:50:48 AM
So you're just going to disregard all the technical features of Bitcoin that offer a wide range of use-cases?

What about time-locks? Tell me how you can time-lock fiat currently, so it cannot be spent for X amount of days or years?
Then, lightning network and atomic swaps. Can you instantly exchange one form of fiat currency for another? (And be able to spend the money immediately)

Then there's also the fact that Bitcoin isn't controlled by a single entity. That fact alone provides us with use-cases that we don't have when using fiat currency.
Is it not a unique feature that we're able to send money worldwide with very little fees and almost no waiting time?
1282  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 25% of affluent millennials hold crypto on: October 31, 2018, 10:29:47 AM
I'm definitely not rich enough to be put in the 'affluent' category, so I would not be a part of that list Tongue

What's even more interesting about this article, is the fact that a majority of millennials does not trust banks in general.
They would not go to banks to seek investment advice, which is absolutely great in my opinion.

In my country, a lot of people were duped by one particular bank into investing in a high-risk investment, while they were told by the banks themselves that it was a very low risk investment.
A lot of people lost their entire life savings that way.

Your website is almost an exact copy of Swiftdemand's website, just seems a little bit fishy to be honest.
Even the basic income payout is exactly the same, as well as the referral earnings.

Why would you just do a low effort copy like that of an existing UBI solution?

Just compare:

1287  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Proposition: Higher house edge reduces overall gambling losses on: October 27, 2018, 09:20:37 AM

What I would also like to mention though, is that in some cryptocurrency-based casino's with low house edges, the time between placing a bet and seeing the result is very small.
I think traditional casino's usually have laws they must follow, which include a minimum amount of time between placing the bet and seeing the result.

this has a role for sure , but I don't think it has anything to do with addiction
also not sure if there is such rule for real casinos , never heard of it and I guess all slots have instant results or am I wrong ?

in general my thoughts is that the gambler is the one who is responsible for addiction , if all gamblers started to know how odds work and that there is no way to beat the normal casino games then they will start limiting their spending on gambling and probably it will be way harder to get addicted

as I stated before , personally when I want to gamble on -EV games I just set a budget to play with and keep playing till I bust it or reach a goal of profit and I believe all the gamblers should do that since there is no way in making money long term with these games

having higher house edge for me won't change a thing , I will still gamble occasionally on dice or roulette and I will still lose the same amount of money but this way the process will be faster  Cheesy

in general I'm totally against that , like imagine in the future poker sites raise their rake to 20% or bookies raise their margin for over 15% claiming that they want to protect people from getting addicted

gamblers will still gamble anyways , actually I guess only people with gambling problem will continue gambling if the house edge is higher   Cheesy

It has everything to do with addiction. The less time there is between the bet and seeing the result of your bet, the higher the chance that you get addicted.

I wouldn't be so fast to say that addiction is 100% the fault of the gambler, this is a very simplified view in my opinion.
Casinos use every trick in the book to get people addicted, even going as far as using psychological research for reaching those goals.

You can be almost certain that some casino's even work very closely with corporate psychologists, literally to make everything as addictive as possible, while still following the law.

Saying that a higher house edge doesn't affect you is just a bit weird. These things are not supposed to be noticeable. They are effective among a large group of people, affecting only a certain percentage of those people.

I certainly do not think that actmyname is suggesting to only play games with a higher house edge. He's merely discussing how a higher house edge might cause people to lose less.

In The Netherlands for example, it's required by law that slot games for example are not shorter than 4 seconds. For the reasons that I've described above.

It's weird people are not discussing this topic and not trying to offer some other agruments to refute or support the op.

We're in Gambling Discussion, just look at the majority of replies on the other threads and you'll see why no-one replies to a serious thread that actually requires some thinking.
I know I sound negative and don't want to turn this into another discussion of the quality of the forum, just answering your question...

Now on topic:

The article you've shared mentions that people generally have "loss thresholds", meaning that they will only gamble till they've made X amount of loss.
You could indeed argue that in casino's with a lower house edge, they will spend more time reaching that "loss threshold".

Would it be right to conclude that there's an increased chance of developing addiction, if more time is spent on gambling?
I have looked into a few studies through Google Scholar, but couldn't immediately find a study that verifies those claims.

What I would also like to mention though, is that in some cryptocurrency-based casino's with low house edges, the time between placing a bet and seeing the result is very small.
I think traditional casino's usually have laws they must follow, which include a minimum amount of time between placing the bet and seeing the result.

Reports indicate that a significant risk factor may be a fast speed of play. Types of games where there is a short time between placing a bet and seeing the results present a higher risk for players. This happens with slot machines, for instance.
Sources: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/15929.php & https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3361844/

That's an additional risk factor that's usually present in these casinos with lower house edges. Sorry for going a bit off-topic here, just thought it was something interesting to mention.

I can't access the article you've shared. Maybe there's a mistake in the URL?

I wish I could read it, because this is definitely an interesting subject and I'd like to see the rest of the research.
I've written one paid article for my Steemit blog and clearly mentioned that I had been paid for writing the article.

Even if it's not illegal in some countries, I think you have an ethical obligation to mention that the article is a paid promotion.
Definitely name and shame those news websites who agreed to this!
1290  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Scammer addresses directory on: October 26, 2018, 03:59:20 PM
Generating new addresses is not a problem, maybe people who send these messages use different addresses for each message they send. Such a list can not help someone not be deceived, but can only serve as an example how some are trying to deceive others. Although some think it is not easy to get into such a trap, I still think there are those who believe in such things and pay the requested amount.

The real problem is that the people who are going to be affected by those types of scams, aren't usually the people who will look up information like that.
To really solve the problem of scams like that, is to immediately report them, so they don't get past spam filters in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, it's also a great idea to document and publish this sort of information, but it's an approach that will not solve the actual problem.
1291  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Related Crimes Surge on: October 26, 2018, 12:33:09 PM
Now I'd like to see some articles that show how much crime is committed using Paypal or credit cards for example.
I'm almost certain that those numbers would just be way higher than crimes committed with Bitcoin.

Bitcoins anonymous transaction is the major cause of crime related to bitcoins. Most criminals have concluded that the best way to get their operation going is to use bitcoins or cryptocurrencies that give privacy and can't be trace to a particular person.
Bitcoin has both good side and bad side. Many anti social people use its bad side for their many illegal activities. Bitcoin is mainly famous for its online money transaction facility. Which is untraceable and uninterrupted. No third party like bank doesn't interfere with its transactions. Because of this many anti social people use for their criminals activities. Many people use it as a illegal money laundry tool. It also use for many cyber crime like malware attacks.

Have you not even bothered to read the rest of this thread? It has already been mentioned that Bitcoin is not untraceable...

this address is most likely from a domain registrar company in Russia. Owner use privacy protection.

Yeah I know that, I mean it's mentioned in the WHOIS info. It's just that almost every review website also mentioned that they're registered in Russia.
Add the fact that they've used a Russian domain registrar company makes it all the more likely that they're based in Russia.

Wow, released under the GPL even!
Kudos for that, I mean you could have chosen a BSD license, but the fact that you went with GPL really show that you're leaving it as free as possible.

I'll certainly test this as soon as Crypto-Games is added!

What kind of guarantees are you going to put in place to assure investors that you're not going to run away with the investments.
I mean, it's pretty weird that you just made a new account on this forum and immediately ask for such a big investment.

Would you invest in something like this personally? Red flags all over the place...
1295  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling addiction becomes more popular with young people over time on: October 26, 2018, 11:02:51 AM
Nowadays it is quite easy to indulge in gambling. A lot many online platforms are available and those who are living in jurisdictions where gambling is banned are also able to take part in it through these platforms.
I think that internet comptrollers should ban all gambling sites because many people like it but if they look at the consequences of gambling, they will find it worst. It is better to ban these sites for ever. By this way young people gambling addiction can be controlled. Regular casinos are enough for gambling. We should fix times for gambling and never accede that limit.

Completely disagree with this. How are they even going to ban gambling sites? They'll just pop up somewhere else.
Besides, there are enough people that can gamble in a responsible way. Just because a few people get addicted doesn't mean that the rest of us should get punished for that.

Regular casinos have a way bigger house edge than some online casinos, I wouldn't be happy if those online casinos just became illegal.

1297  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbook/Casino Owner "5Dimes Tony" found dead after ransom was paid in BTC on: October 26, 2018, 10:24:23 AM
I've read somewhere a person very close to him might actually be involved. Also the wife hired some ex feds to investigate in addition to the police. It indeed sounds like a scene from the action movie

I'd say that's very likely.

He probably talked about his wealth to the wrongs people and they've then set up the kidnapping to relieve him from his funds.
The fact that they still killed him after the ransom was supposedly paid is pretty terrible, but also somewhat logical actually.

If they had not killed him, investigators might have been able to find his kidnappers.

My condolences to his family, no-one deserves this.
1298  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Scammer addresses directory on: October 26, 2018, 10:05:51 AM
Your email address is probably bought or leaked from somewhere then. Either way, I don't think listing them will do any help as they are most likely uniquely generated for each email they send otherwise it would be easy to trace.

Yeah the addresses are not the sort of information that needs to be listed IMO, but the website also includes the e-mails that accompanied those addresses, which is useful.
I'd implement better formatting for those e-mails, it's just difficult to read that way.

Can other people also submit entries? If not, I don't think this will have much impact tbh.
1299  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Do you use hardware wallet? on: October 26, 2018, 09:52:41 AM
I definitely share mocacinno's concerns that this topic is just made to promote this wallet.
That said, in case it isn't, I would recommend going with an already established brand like Trezor or Ledger.

I have a Ledger Nano S and have been very happy with that for years now.
I bought it because the price/quality just seemed the best, compared to the Trezor wallets and I could easily ship it without additional costs to my country.

Paid around 80 Euros for it, shipping included.

Edit:

Here's an English video for that Kaiser wallet, should've just shared that immediately:

1300  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Video] How do Casinos make money? on: October 25, 2018, 06:47:07 PM
Well, all casino's are in in for the money, that's just a fact.
That doesn't mean that there aren't somewhat ethical casino's around.

Take Crypto-Games for example, since we both have it in our signatures

That's a partially crowdfunded casino and I do not think they have any of those shady tactics to get players hooked, apart from it just being gambling of course.

Lets see:

  • Way lower house edge than those shown in the video
  • I don't think they've programmed near misses into their games
  • They will shut down your account and ban your IP address when you ask for it (in case of addiction)
  • No addiction inducing bonuses with rollover requirements

I'm sure that there are more reasons, but just wanted to show that it can be done differently.
