Last thing to "African Hunter": Did your assay come with any literature? You have a receipt. Now never talk to me again.
I'm going to have someone else film from now on. About the .99...I guess I can't do it. I believed strongly it would be .99 because I made sure to keep the temperature right at silvers melting point. I should probably remind everyone that African Hunter got the first ingots I ever made, and he knew that when he bought them. Then I'd pour and all the alloy crap would stay in the crucible. I'm sticking to 925+ (w/shot) bars now.
Although, I've been looking into it and you can remove impurities from 925 silver or 90% coins. It involves acids, etc. Maybe someday.
1782  Economy / Goods / Re: [VIDEO] Me melting Silver and casting an ingot on: December 27, 2012, 09:52:13 AM
I believe it is a flux to bring down the melting point of metals.

On a side note: just so you know making videos of your activities doesn't prove anything (much like your offer to videotape you mailing me silver). All it proves is you melted an unidentified metal on camera, or dropped an envelope in a mail box. Hardly proof of anything just so you are aware. Additionally are you aware you can lose silver by overheating it? It will literally evaporate. Perhaps that was the issue you may have had with your content dispute?
You all saw what I put on the scale, and while hallmarks are tough to see, there's no real debating anything in that video wasn't sterling.

Of course it could be debated. You could have bought fake sterling which was .8 not .925; just like you bought fake Cubans thinking they were real. Or are you saying you are such an expert silversmith that you can tell fake/low sterling from .925?

Quote
Also, I volunteered with Tecshare to drive to my local drop box where I was going to video myself counting out each coin, taping it down or otherwise packaging it, showing the shipping address and finally putting it in the mailbox-where its out of my hands. If that doesn't prove anything I don't know what does.

That proves nothing as nobody is saying you sold shady coins (yet). Only that you sold bars @ .99 which assayed from .925 to .88.

Also showing someones shipping address on youtube that you are sending bullion to would be the height of retardation.

Super simple stuff.

When you post ridiculousness like this I can't help but call you out
I'm serious. Stay off my posts or I will ask to have you blocked from me. If you can find jewelry thats made of 80% silver id think you were a half-way decent person. Silver all over the world is marked 925. By international enforcement, it all has to be-either 925, sterling silver, sterling, ss, etc.
You know one thing, too? I'm honest. a good deal of trust is required for this site, and I would never scam anyone. Don't even say I tried to scan you dude, dont even try. Do you have a job? Or is it really worth so much of your time to argue over less than $5/silver. Sorry the bars werent pure, but you have and paid for more silver than you would have if you just got the ingots-I included the half dollar. When you wanted to "return" your item I even offered you a washington quarter. I know exactly why you're mad, and I'll say it again: You got a really good deal on my silver. You wanted to flip it but realized that trading silver from a non-professional mint proves to be rather difficult. My ingots are meant for long-term investing, not for doing whatever you planned on doing with them.
Second of all, did I ever mention uploading a video of anyone's address to YouTube? Did I? Once?
People can believe what they want to believe, but I put on my life and everything I love I'm not here to rip people off/scam them. I never have and I never will.
1783  Economy / Goods / Re: Pepper Sprays and ways to defend yourself againt bad people. on: December 27, 2012, 09:42:54 AM
People really bought from you? Nice job. When I posted the same thing a couple days ago only 1 person was interested, and ended up buying it. thanks for stealing my product to sell. just kidding, i love market competition. we should spray eachother to see who's is better.
1784  Economy / Economics / Re: A really tough question on: December 27, 2012, 07:27:03 AM
I believe the idea behind the $1 coins is to reduce the expense of having to print and subsequently destroy all the $1 bills in circulation regularly.
First of all, no sarcasm here. I know they destroy old bills, but they replace them with new ones. It just doesn't make sense that instead of making a new bill (out of paper) they use metals with [at least] fractional value. Especially considering the notion of getting rid of the dime, nickel and penny.
1785  Economy / Economics / A really tough question on: December 27, 2012, 07:15:59 AM
Although plans are set in place (I read) to get rid of the penny, and even dime and nickel and print them on paper, why is the government increasingly making $1 coins?
If I sound like a fool-I can assure you at most things I'm not. Can someone confirm/deny the validity of my first claim and answer this question?

And if you want to know what I'm referring to:

1786  Economy / Goods / Re: [VIDEO] Me melting Silver and casting an ingot on: December 25, 2012, 08:27:15 AM
Interesting video, but I agree with tecshare.  I don't see how this clears up the trainwreck?
Trainwreck? If you're referring to any past event I'm tired of speaking on it. I'm just going to video the process for each ingot from now on in-case anyone is skeptical/wants some evidence.
1787  Economy / Goods / Re: [VIDEO] Me melting Silver and casting an ingot on: December 25, 2012, 08:23:31 AM

You all saw what I put on the scale, and while hallmarks are tough to see, there's no real debating anything in that video wasn't sterling. I melted it in front of your eyes, showed it to you (pointed out characterisitcs) so you would know it was the ingot the entire way through. Yes, of course there is the possibility of losing silver. Its not even a possibility-it happens. No silversmith in the world making a 2oz bar would put 2oz in the crucible initially. Trust me, I know how long to heat this and when to pour it. Your idea of the overheating is nothing I never considered.
In terms of the video, this video showed you guys that I made an ingot out of what is 925 sterling silver. Remember I suggested noticing noticeable features. Also, I volunteered with Tecshare to drive to my local drop box where I was going to video myself counting out each coin, taping it down or otherwise packaging it, showing the shipping address and finally putting it in the mailbox-where its out of my hands. If that doesn't prove anything I don't know what does.
Finally-borax does act as a flux. It helps molten metal from sticking to the crucible, too.
1788  Economy / Goods / Re: [FAKE] Cuban Cigars: Cohiba Robustos: only 0.35 BTC shipped! on: December 25, 2012, 06:19:46 AM
I gave one out tonight, he knew exactly what brand and where it(should have) came from, and didn't suspect a thing.
And there we go, ladies and gentlemen. Cigars are a funny thing. Lets be honest-even though they smell good, they taste like shit and leave you lightheaded as a muhfuggah. But, they're symbolic of success and wealth, and so we [men-never known a woman to smoke cigars] desire them. Especially Cuban ones. The forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest.
I'm curious-what'd he have to say about them? They good smokes?
1789  Economy / Goods / Re: [FAKE] Cuban Cigars: Cohiba Robustos: only 0.35 BTC shipped! on: December 25, 2012, 06:16:20 AM
What quality are the fakes? Are they actually decent smoking cigars, or cheap and lower quality?
They looked like good quality. I didn't smoke them. But they were tightly pressed and wrapped in the leaf. I guess these were "higher-end" fakes (they came from a humidor...which now I know isn't a credential for shit). A lot of the other fakes the vendors with little carts peddle for dollars. I don't think anyone buying those thinks they're real. They probably just sell them to the next fool.
These cigars have been sold.
I'm going to make a trip south of the border soon. And to the user that asked-yes, I am going to take lots of pictures. I'll take pictures of the cheapest fakes you ever did see to higher-end fakes to [hopefully] the real ones when I find them.
Demand seemed to be pretty high before we realized these were fakes. I've educated myself pretty thoroughly and trust me-I'm only buying ones I feel 100% are real. If you want some fake ones to pass on to the next guy (itd be very easy to do, although I don't condone it), get in touch with me via PM.
Thanks.

You'd be making more BTC by cooking up meth in your bedroom with laundry detergent.
Of course, big Breaking Bad fan. I'll stick to legal activities/trade though. But thanks for the advice lol.
1791  Economy / Goods / Re: Before a disgruntled customer says anything... on: December 24, 2012, 04:28:57 AM

Who would take stamped sterling and melt it into some incongruous suspicious mass?  How much value did your spent time, labor, fuel, etc add to the silver?  And who the hell would melt minted coins?  Do you know understand the value of easily identifiable bullion?

Bitcoins bring out the moron in everything.
Again, I'm a numismatist. I collect rare coins. Of course in collecting real coins I come across cull silver coins (worth only melt). If I find a good deal on these, I buy them. I RARELY melt them down. I do it when people ask. Some like the allure of a "silver bar" rather than a handful of old, crappy looking coins. But generally I don't melt coins. I have a thread up now somewhere offering a bunch of 90% coins.
As far as melting stamped sterling pieces...are you trying to argue why an entire industry/hobby exists? Would you rather have a handful of flattened sterling silver rings or a solid 925 bar of silver?
1792  Economy / Goods / Re: [FAKE] Cuban Cigars: Cohiba Robustos: only 0.35 BTC shipped! on: December 24, 2012, 04:23:36 AM
I looked it up online

http://havanajournal.com/cigars/cohibas

The real ones have raised letters in gold. Look for those next time Smiley

That's a good start. All current production Cohibas should have the raised gold letters. Even if those ones did come from a box that used the previous style labels, there are still a number of things that just jump out as being wrong.

  • The number of rows of squares above the word Cohiba is the first thing I always notice other than the gold lettering.
  • There shouldn't be so much black space above the top row of squares to the edge of the band.
  • There's too much white space around the word Cohiba.
  • The yellow color is too bright, should be a bit more orangey than canary. Although the current style bands are more yellow than the old ones. Never the tone of these ones though. Just too bright.
  • The paper has no gloss to it, and pretty much every cigar band I've ever seen has some sheen to it.
  • The "La Habana" font is wrong (especially the H), and the spacing of those words isn't right, and the comma is in the wrong place.
  • The portion of yellow band where La Habana is written should be wider, a bit wider than the size of the white box around Cohiba.
  • You can also see that the end of the band is on the side of the cigar, and it should always be on the "back", or opposite to the center of the front of the band, so opposite the center of the word Cohiba in this case.

Current Production Cohiba Band
Band these are maybe trying to be

Other things from looking at the picture is the placement of the band. It's too high up, but that could have moved at some point so not definitive, but the sort of thing that should immediately make you look closer.

Moving on to the cigar itself, without having it my hand, the proportions look off for being a robusto as well. Could just be the angle of the photo though.

You still have these, so if you feel like doing an experiment we can analyze a bit more. Slip one of the bands off without tearing it. Flatten the cylinder out, and measure it along the long side in 64ths of an inch. Plug that result into: (result/pi)*2 = ?? and that will tell us the ring gauge, which should be 50 for a robusto. It should also be 5 inches long, so measure that to. Aged cigars will shrink a bit, so the length might not be exact, but if it's off by too much then you have another reason to question. That shrinking is why we use the band to determine RG since it stays the same size.

Then there's just the quality of the wrapper. Cohibas are the Cuban flagship brand. They're made with the best quality inputs, and by the most skilled rollers. You'd never see a real Cohiba with that rough of a wrapper. Cohibas mostly all have a triple cap at the head as well, that or a pigtail, these have neither.

Looking at boxes can be less reliable. It's easy to find real boxes, I've got about 20 sitting on a shelf right next to me lol. Warranty stickers can be a very reliable indicator. Sometimes you see these practically neon green ones that are pretty funny.

Check out this site: http://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/index.htm it's one of the best resources there is for information about sizes, pictures of bands, packaging, the whole deal. It's got photos of virtually everything, and is kept quite up to date.

At the end of the day I'd really just advise against buying cigars in Mexico. Everyone I know who travels there just brings their own, as it's just not worth the trouble trying to find legit ones. Which isn't even to say those wouldn't be ok smokes, they just aren't what they're claiming to be.

First of all, I printed all that out and am going to take it with me on my next trip down there. Also I've been doing some more independent research. Probably the smartest thing I did was see what types of Cigars the Cuban State (Cohiba, Monte Cristo, etc) are making. If some guy trys to sell me some cigar that hasn't been made in years, odds are pretty good its a fake.
Of course there are TONS of fake Cubans in Mexico. There are TONS of fake everything. One pharmacy even got busted for selling fake *sealed* pharmaceuticals. It definitely takes some experience down there to find what you're looking for. The bottom line is EVERY ONE wants money. There are little girls coming up to you to beg and shop owners rushing up to you with some poncho, saying its your color. I've found some pretty amazing stuff down there,  and its all because of my interaction with the people. You buy from their shop, they love you-they'll tell you anything. I have a few "guys" there, the goal of my next visit will be to find some real Cubans, and hopefully a "guy" (no homo lol) to go with it.

EveryDay Carry. The knife you carry to open letters and packages with.
Oh I see, got one as a keychain. This things SOLD to someone overseas, btw.
1794  Economy / Goods / Re: Pepper Spray ! on: December 24, 2012, 12:47:03 AM
I can't believe this stuff is available in my state!
You can buy OC/Pepper Spray in all States.

A couple of States have a few laws about how much you can carry, and in Mass you need a license. But yeah, you can get the stuff anywhere in the US.

Would it be legal to sell a capsaicin extract in places where pepper spray is illegal? - Just in a normal bottle not a spray bottle
From what I can find, Oleoresin Capsicum can be sold anywhere in the US. Pepper Spray usually isn't just 100% OC.

Nobody really cares about Pepper Spray in the US. You're more likely to get in trouble with your EDC knife.
What's an EDC knife?
1795  Economy / Goods / Re: Before a disgruntled customer says anything... on: December 24, 2012, 12:45:52 AM
Just don't worry about him, you gave him too much. If you have any other problems with him let me know and I will send my assassins to make him love the ingot he bought from you and pay you a little extra just because he was so happy about it! : ))) Just kiddin'
Appreciate it. If anyone reads through this whole thing they'll understand whats going on. African Hunter bought the first ingots I ever made (and he knew that), and I worked hard to first get the scrap to a temperature where the silver melted and the alloy didn't. And to compensate, I added a ton of silver shot. Truth be told I did believe the ingots were .99. But just in case they weren't, I decided to include a Barber Half Dollar. That would make up for silver content even if ALL the ingots were 925 instead of .99. The "I will make it right" was before I decided to include the Barber-that was making it right.
About a month after the transaction (and after African Hunter had left me positive feedback) he comes back saying the assay results show the silver to be at 925,.9 and .8 (impossible because my torch doesn't get hot enough to BOIL silver and thus melt it off). Of course he had no literature, nothing to scan and show me (wouldn't you think an assay includes that?)
Of course I said no returns, that transaction was over and done with. He still got a great deal on silver and got more than what he paid for since I threw the Barber in as an insurance policy to avoid this exact scenario. It turned out the "alleged" (important word) lack of silver was about $5 worth. He already had that silver as part of the insurance policy that was the Barber, but I offered him a pre-64 quarter.
This wasn't good enough for him. He wanted silver in the form of either silver coins or minted bullion. Translation: interestingly this all coincided with the drop in silver prices. He wanted to take the great deal on silver he got from me and make money off it. But, he realized you can't trade homemade ingots like you can minted ones. So he was out of luck.
Anyone who reads this can form their own opinion, but that's what happened. And ask yourself-you see how many pages this thread is, how much time "African Hunter" has spent trying to get no more than $6 in silver (which the quarter I offered him would have done). It should be plain to see.
I am REALLY tired of this issue but feel like I have to keep posting on this thread to defend myself from the way "African Hunter" takes messages out of context (I did say I would make it right-before I decided the way I was going to do that was adding the Barber Half) and just provides examples that are entirely unlike this issue.
Just know that if you're a customer of mine you get whatever it is you pay for. I have started filming the making of my ingots so issues like this can't arise in the future. There are plenty of good people I've traded with on here. People whose back I have and will vouch for, and people who will do the same for me.

I personally would buy from this guy. Who wouldn't? Step 1 is to almost burn your house down, step 2 is almost cut your fingers off while sanding, step 3 is hammer it flat like some sort of primate. This guy can't even afford proper tools and at this rate his hospital bills will be driving him into debt. BIT COIN LOGIC!

1797  Economy / Goods / Re: [VIDEO] Me melting Silver and casting an ingot on: December 24, 2012, 12:03:07 AM
Hey!

Thanks for the videos. That was actually really neat to see. I now have a lot more appreciation for those home-made silver ingots. From the video, that ingot sure does look impressive. Very, very shiny and smooth. Looks like it takes a long time to do that.

As far as the hole in the ingot, does that happen on the side touching the wood, or on the top side where you pour the water? If it's on the side touching the wood, my guess is that moisture in the wood seeps up and causes the hole to form. Wood has a high moisture content, and that moisture will probbaly boil off as soon as the hot silver touches it. I guess the plastic doesn't do it because it's non-porous and shouldn't trap water. I'm also guessing that the drier the wood gets, the less that will happen, although it gets more moist with the water you have to add to cool it down. And if it gets too dry, I guess it could catch on fire more than it already did.

That being said, I really know nothing about silver casting beyond what I learned in the videos. I liked your creative use of materials. I do hope that you can get a real tumbler, though! Must be a lot of work shaking that by hand. You might be able to rig up a way to spin it off-center on your drill, too.

Anyways, nice job on the video! I learned quite a lot.

Thanks,
Teran
Not sure what the poster below is doing on here, but thanks for the comments. It is the wood-side that the hole forms on. I've been wondering why and thats a good explanation. I have a graphite mold but hate it because you have to heat it up to the temperature of silver's melting point (uses a lot of gas). Looking into finding a cast iron one or something.
