Darkcoin community, I require your assistance!

I'm planning to do a written interview with DirectBet.EU about Darkcoin, and you get to ask the questions!

Here is the Google Doc, containing 5 questions so far :

https://docs.google.com/document/d/19roQmXVw4Gzd3Rg5sLnj3IHK9uW_pW7aCS2LH00RjkQ/edit?usp=sharing

Anyone can comment, no editing priveleges.

Closing the document in 24 hours from now, so put in your questions while you can Smiley

Perhaps ask whether the strength of the community or the depth of experience in the official team have assisted them in their decision to adopt Darkcoin?

Add it to the list Smiley

Done.  I've never used the google docs collaboration features.  Tidy!

So the logo isn't going to be my genitalia then?  Thats me out of the renaming debate...

Serious question:  I read that the block reward is going to be reduced by 7% soon.  Can somebody give me a newbie explanation on what effects we might see as a result?

yes 7% annual decrease.
Hmmm logicaly less coins mined = price up... but there is no logic in crypto ® Wink

Thanks mate.  Logically there is less reward for miners and masternode owners but difficulty should adjust if network hashrate drops...but then again price goes up (in theory) so hopefully everything stays the same apart from the price Wink

Is the reduction happening on our first birthday?

https://github.com/darkcoin/darkcoin/blob/master/src/main.cpp#L1415

Based on blockheight, every 210240 blocks

Thank you kindly. Logical, I should have known that.

It's not like the name should be changed in a hurry and also a rebranding could easily be taken into consideration at the final release of InstantX. You weigh in which of these technologies would be more attractive to the general public (anonymity and speed or both) and change the variables (name + marketing) accordingly. You could also do a "name changing" contest, polls and everything. I'm pretty sure that even Evan had this type of conversation with himself, maybe long before we even thought about writing on the subject.

You can also keep Darkcoin and you will see that the need of a 'name change' will come naturally as all of these new technologies like InstantX, Masternode applications/services and others will be implemented, and then you would want them to be shown off by a more representative name.

My previous opinion was expressed as a result of what Darkcoin did for me on our first encounter. Unfortunately, It inspired fraud and uncertainty and it's almost comical, because you can do almost the same type of things with fiat, bitcoin, dogecoin and others. It's just that this name is scary and it creates this strong perception. Heh, i hope i don't sound ridiculous. It's just an opinion. I could be just an isolated case.

Its not just you mummy, its a fairly common opinion.

If we had to rebrand, could we just go with DuffCoin?  It's still a D so we can keep the logo, and it's harmless.  I don't really want to but this arguing constantly is getting to be too much!

My wife is constantly put off by the misogyny and sexism in the crypto world so she'd like to propose that we rebrand as Peniscoin in response to Titcoin etc.

EDIT:  She has just sketched a pretty eye catching logo too!  Undecided

Let me start by saying that the brand Darkcoin has been instrumental in helping us get the exposure we have had so far and attracting  investors. Evan is still refining Darksend and InstantX is still on the works, there are many things missing.

I think we should move forward promoting adoption with Darkcoin and see how far we can take it. I think  there are many things we could do if the need arises like creating  OEM wallets with special branding for specific purposes. For example, for an international funding situation, in which we launch a special client called HelpMalala, is downloaded from her website but powered by Darkcoin and when you buy malalas you are actually buying DRK. Is just an idea.

On the other hand, if we are eventually re branding I think it should be opportunity driven, I dont like the idea of re branding just because we feel it might be an issue in the future. I would like for it to be a little more real. For example, if we talk to Bitpay and they say they are willing to add and support Darkcoin if we change the name to Dash. Then cool we might go for it but we are guaranteed a big leap in adoption by changing the name.

For now, I think Darkcoin is perfect, it attracts attention and people engage with us. Time is also an important factor as businesses and the regulators see that it isn't really a big deal they will slowly adopt and be cool. I think is very hard to be able to anticipate what is going to happen in the crypto world so we might just have to adapt as things become more clear.
Amen

Good reasoning there.  I'd stand by that logic.

I'll tell Mrs Hedge that PenisCoin is a no go.  ::insert pump and dump joke here::
2190  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: December 19, 2014, 04:51:00 PM
I must say I agree strongly that rebranding is important, and yes, now would be a good time; before it is more widely known. I also recognize that there is strong sentiment against the idea. Huh

Simply consider something as ubiquitous and harmless(?) as "Black Friday." This past November it was reported that marketers in Egypt and other Arabic countries wanted in on the marketing craze, but refused to accept the term because Friday was a "holy" day and "Black" indicated evil. As a result they coined the phrase, and started the tradition of "White Friday," which apparently was a great success.

I hate to disappoint anybody, but DRK is not near as popular (yet;-) as Black Friday--If the need was seen to rebrand it, in order to gain market acceptance by 1/4 of the world's population--do we wish to alienate that same population (and others)?

I work in what could be called "international aid/development," and I see a critical role for something like DRK, but I can assure you that the major players in this field will be very reluctant to work with it, as the name now stands.

Many who know nothing of crypto-currencies would gladly get a wallet and send funds directly to someone like Malala Yousafzai, (the young girl who just won the Nobel Peace Prize) and the thousands like her. Do you really think she, or others like her would use something with the name Dark Coin? Whether you believe in a Devil or not, those who do, will refuse the association, and both they and the coin will suffer.

If we had to rebrand, could we just go with DuffCoin?  It's still a D so we can keep the logo, and it's harmless.

I'd be a fan of:

Dash - Digital cash mashed together (unfortunately, there is a cryptonote coin named Dashcoin. I'd drop the coin part personally). Further, Dash implies fast (hello instantx)
Dinera

I think the D is crucial and allows the same font type and logo that has been used thus far to remain. Dash I think would be very fitting. "Do you happen to accept Dash"? "Dash accepted here"
Can I suggest DiCash?

Then you'll have people pronouncing it Dick Ash.
I think Stonehedge's wife already proposed that one. Shocked

"Excuse me sir, do you take PenisCoin here?"

Just my 2 duffs but whilst I agree that the name Darkcoin is seen negatively by a lot of people outside of the crypto world (I have literally never spoken to a newbie about it and not had to answer questions about drugs, child porn etc etc) I think its also really important to educate the world that going dark in a privacy sense is a very positive thing.

I suppose in time, the darknet and "going dark" will not be perceived negatively as people begin to understand what dark actualy means in an IT context but it will take time.

Unfortunately for Darkcoin, it will probably take quite a long time for perceptions to shift.  The big question is, is Darkcoin strong enough to be the catalyst for a change in public perception?  Or shall we concede that Darkcoin is as much about instantTX as it is about privacy and call it Clearcoin instead?

Good spot!  I'll have a chat with integral.

I just got a really useless quote back from one of my suppliers.  £1 off per unit if I buy 100.
2194  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: December 19, 2014, 04:20:10 PM
I thought it is a desciption of how of this feature (true decentralization) already works? In my opinion this whitepaper does not describe what is going to be implemented, but what already is implemented. I thought another whitepaper will come when Mr. Spread has reviewed Darkcoin and has decided if and how he will implement Darknodes.

You thought it right. The White paper was written after the fork that implemented those changes. I'm not sure what  stonehedge calls "lightweight", so i'd also appreciate if he explained what he means by that.

The whitepaper is quite detailed for a whitepaper. Keep in mind this is not an academic article, but a business one, so yes, he has to keep it simple so business people (i.e. investors) can understand it. If you need more detailed explanations of the science and technology behind the implementation, i am sure Mr. Spread will be glad to provide it, but that is not the point of a whitepaper.

Whether I read it as an investor or as an IT professional, it still doesn't actually mention many plans of features for the coin.

I really like the idea of decentralising mining.  I would love to see this coin work.  Mr Spread has proven himself to know what he is doing.  Having said that, he hasn't shared much of those plans with the public yet.

On a separate note I tried to mine some Spreadcoins over the last two days but the provided X11 miner only gets 1MH out of a 290x and network hashrate is over 2GH.  I'd be interested to see whether by removing pools this coin has simply created a solo mine arms race.  2GHps of X11 is a lot of GPUs Wink

I've bought several hundred of them (earlier versions) before through the same supplier and I wonder whether I'd be able to get a good bulk deal for Darkcoiners.
Stonehedge, please keep me posted on this--I'm interested.
FWIW; the reviews on Amazon site a security flaw if the unit gets submerged in water. Claims there is a work around but the link is deleted. Anyone know the link?

I didn't even know such a thing existed!  That's pretty cool!

I personally prefer the non keypad ones (especially as there is a rumour about the submersion vulnerability!)

You can also get drive caddies that have encryption hardware on board so it will encrypt any 2.5" drive you insert and only allow access if you tap in the correct passcode.

I'm just waiting on a quote for 100 of the Blockmaster devices.

Remember though, these are secure backup devices and not for long term storage!  Its not funny when you realise that the only copy of a document you need is on a safestick and you can't remember the password and you only have 6 attempts left until it erases itself...

That necessarily means that there is some software installed to interpret the drive.

One thing is the pen drive not have an internal battery, so you can't punch in the code BEFORE POST... but should be ok after POST&before boot-up. I can deal with that. Press F12 to "hang the system", power-up the pen drive, insert code & boot from USB.

But to not be able to access the info in the drive until the OS if fully booted... I don't really like that very much. In theory, one would only really need to provide energy to the pen drive to power up the circuit, so you can punch in the code and unlock it. Then it shouldn't really matter what is in it, and what/who reads it.

If there is some "driver" involved in the process, that is a huge point of failure.

If its true hardware encryption, it shouldnt matter if its a full OS or a word document in there.

I reckon your F12 plan would work if you wanted to boot from a keypad pendrive.

The Datalocker devices are secure until unlocked, at which point your pen drive is like any other pen drive plugged into a PC.  I have used them extensively with government clients in the past.  They are really more designed for preventing data loss if you are carrying sensitive documents on your pen drive and lose it.  They would also work well for wallet backups. They cannot be decrypted without the passphrase and the software element required to pass the passphrase to the encryption hardware is not an attack vector.  The safestick versions erased themselves if the incorrect code was entered 7 times.

Wow, that it cool. I wonder if one could use this to contain a full bootable OS, or only punch in the code wile powered by USB2/3...

anyway, how much does one of these puppies cost?

Due the the nature of their design, it isn't possible to boot from any external hardware encrypted drive be it a pen drive or a USB hard drive.

The ones with key codes cost about $50 retail and work on all Mac, Windows and Linux.

Its annoying because Blockmaster used to manufacture a device called a Safestick which you could get in 2GB sizes, it was compatible with Linux and Mac and only cost about £7 GBP each if you bought in bulk.  They discontinued them last year.

I'm doing a bit of research.  The Kensington hardware encrypted pen drives don't work on Linux.

I'm sent some emails to some suppliers that I know to see what they have access to.  It'd be great if I could get a batch of really simple FIPS2 or FIPS3 pen drives for cheap.

EDIT:  You've got me thinking about booting from encrypted pen drives.  You might be able to from the key pad ones.  I'll do some research.  You definitely can't from most varieties though.
