WO please, I understand that we're not on a 90 degree up course to the moon, but this thread has a reputation to uphold. Somebody respond to the man.

Guess the non-English language made the entire post, including quote, just fly under my radar. I retract my former post. WO delivers.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm just blind.

It was a sort of personal post for Bitserve and more importantly, I like to mess with you all. Anyway...disculpas, pensé que todos aquí podían leer español..

Not a licensed electrician?  Want to be a human bug zapper?  Wire your own solar panels.

Absolutely HM! Don't learn how to do anything for yourself. /s

On the serious side..ya..this stuff can actually kill you or a loved one if you mess it up. That being said there are a lot of good resources out there to learn enough to competently install your own systems. If your not 100% confident in your own skills I would say build it, then hire a qualified electrician to check out your work or have it inspected by the local relevant authority.

People fear what they do not understand.

Now we support Grin. Grin
theymos:
Therefore, I'm happy to announce that the forum is now accepting grin payments automatically, probably the first site other than exchanges to do so. You'll find a link at the bottom of the evil-fee and copper-membership pages.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

I don't want to sound disrespectful to Theymos. This is his house, and we are all guests here. I'm grateful for his efforts in maintaining this community through myriad challenges.

Having said that, I'm not sure what i think about this.

The fact that we already have ASIC's being deployed for this project leaves me extremely dubious. I understand that spinning up new ASIC's for crypto-du-jour is becoming a regular occurrence, now, but am not entirely sure what Grin brings to the table compared to BTC/Lightning.

I'm being much more neutral-bearish-jaded, looking forward, than I was in 2018.

 Fuck 2018.

 No lube.

 HODL.

I agree that the tech behind MW and grin/beam appear interesting theoretically, but the infinite emission structure gives me pause. I guess I am just habituated to bitcoin. #dyor

Another thing, the 2010 to 2011 data is not useful. This chart is just bears being greedy at the end of the cycle.

I agree completely, and that first data set is the basis of the rest of their regression. Sloppy.

A clear prediction, easy to check for correctness. With the usual graphs (I cut them out). You spoil us by making this thread look as if we were watching prices. I was surprised when I saw you'd become a hero. Could have sworn you were already.

Indeed..it shall become fairly obvious quite quickly I imagine. I will even go so far as to put forth a couple of dates. I believe we will see a dip between April 30th and July 8th. By November 5th you will probably want to be in as much as you can risk. The top of the next cycle will culminate around December 21st, 2021 between $79.5k and $330k. I know these are a broad range of dates and prices but I want you guy's to do some work.

+1 WOsMerit

I'm new to this thread and I plan to stay to know your opinion about the BTC movement and possible future movements.
Based on the https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/, the closing price of BTC/USD was $3,706 and unfortunately only 7 of the total poll voters were right, I guess it says that majority still believe we will see big pump early this year.

Welcome...thanks for stopping in. The poll is a great source of infomation..it accurately provides proof that only about 5% at the Wall know what the hell they are talking about. Typical in much of society imo.

+1 WOsMerit

Welcome! You'll find we muck about off-topic a lot, but there is some price discussion occasionally. The poll is almost always far too bullish and doesn't represent the predictions people put their names to. Current consensus seems to be that we will drag along this bottom till June or so, maybe with a ghastly stab lower sometime, then begin to grind up very slowly through all the resistance levels.

I cant keep meriting you or they might suspect something..

+1 WOsMerit for the f*ck of it.

no the polls are a sport in themselves - roughly the same % always go for the bottom price category and another but different % for the top price category. many of these peop[le i suspect pick the extremes just for fun no matter what they truly believe so the genuine number of true guesses is alot smaller say 60% of the total. Then the ranges in many categories in the middle are quite small comparing how the price drifts around so all in all I think 7 people getting it right is actually ok/normal and says nothing about the peoples vies on future moves (pump or otherwise). but then you already knew that ..............

+1 WOsMerit

Throwing opsec to the wind I give you an actual image of members of the Wall sitting around the hopium hooka engaged in daytarding.

Sideways, sideways....

Well... After the btcmillionaire more than successful subject about creating a self sustainable pond in his property... I would like to ask.... Anyone here has fully self-sustainable solar powered property? I have studied a lot about it, but some real life experience from another fellow WO'er would be great.

I think it is already at the point where it is cost efficient (more so considering where I live... SUN all the time!) and I am perfectly capable of doing everything myself and know my shit about buying stuff for way less that its usual price (either second hand or surplus) which will also help reduce the total cost substantially.

The property already has its own waterwell with enough capacity to fill the 125000 litres pool over a couple days. So it is only the power grid what I would like to cut off for a completely self sustainable property. My dream!

Will WO also deliver this time? lol

Repost of a classic chart (source unknown):

Leading up to halving price starts to move. Maybe it's different this time.

Looks different..  It has hit the '3000 in October 2019' level way earlier than that chart shows.  So 2023 looks pessimistic, but we will find out in time.  I think the price will be significantly above where we are now by autumn this year.  No ATH, but higher by a good deal.

New ATH? Sometime between late 2020 and late 2021, if the relationship to the halving and the roughly four year cycle holds.  YMMV.

This is my take on that chart that infofront posted after some consideration. I think the next peak will be in the 2nd half of '21 in December. If this is any indication then we will have one week between now and mid-summer of fairly extreme volatility that will make a yearly ATL before trending upwards. Many assumptions and a fair amount of bias here so do your own research.

3530  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Source Message on: January 16, 2019, 01:52:57 AM
This is where me, and you disagree completely. I don't care who I send merits too, as long as their post is deserving. I don't factor in trust or any other outside factors other than the post that I'm looking at. Does this user normally make good posts? If so I might go, and look at some of their others, and merit them individually. But, I won't let that stop me meriting a user 1, 2 or 10 times in a row. I don't care about the 1% mentality, but I do appreciate those that take the time to look for unrecognized posters among the community. The fact is there are some exceptional posters within this forum, and they deserve as much recognition as others. What I don't agree with is rewarding members for being polite. That's ridiculous from my point of view. However, I do agree that's nice to merit those who don't get merit often, but I'll only do that if their post is up to standard. I think it's true that a lot of the merit is recycled between the same members, but you know why? Because they're constantly putting out good content that deserves merit. I don't have a problem with that. However, having said that what other users do with their merit is up to them. They don't need to look for verification or approval. They can come up with their own guidelines, and use their own initiative when giving it out. I also don't have a problem with that.

Globbo's motive might be generous, and admirable. However, that doesn't mean anyone else has to agree. If he is a merit source then he can wait for his merit to replenish like the rest of us merit sources. However, asking for merit to distribute themselves when its not even to good quality posts isn't something I'd expect from anyone. Sure, good quality posts are subjective, but I think most would agree that some of the posts are low quality content at best.

Well..we can agree to disagree then. Look, I will admit readily that - 1) Begging for merit is a no no, though I am not sure that's the case here.  2) Meriting sh*t posts shouldn't happen as much as it does. 3) I am as guilty as the next person of sending my merits to generally the same circle of people for the reasons you mentioned above. They make quality content and I enjoy it and like to show my appreciation.

This is the root of the problem I feel, I like to call it the Peter Pan syndrome for lack of a better name. I have found over the years that many "adults" seem to forget the shear joy and freedom that the child mind enjoys. There are no barriers or stigma to corral your thought's or excitement. I find that the legendary and the giant's who's post's we gravitate toward's tend to forget how large the entry barrier is to participation is around here. Its intimidating for many to write down their thought's and have them criticized out in the public. This is not blame..its just a statement of what I consider fact. So when I see a new poster I tend to merit their post even though it might be below the threshold I think necessary to have earned a merit. The same goes double when I see someone do something kind or generous. I for one would like to see more of this.  ymmv.
3531  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Source Message on: January 16, 2019, 01:08:58 AM
I dont come out of the hole'n the Wall much..  I don"t care for the endless ad campaigns, trolls and the "I know better than you because I am screaming louder" mentality that I find prevalent in many posts out "here". Imho the merit system is obviously flawed despite theymos and the "meta" crew's best intentions. It's either a semi-functional beta at best or a self perpetuating circle jerk at worst.

I do tend to be of the mind set that something is better than nothing however and do appreciate the hard work involved for some. That being said, I am having a issue with this thread for some reason. When people start telling other people how to think my censorship hackles rise and the warning bells start clamoring.

Here is a example. These two have made such a impression on me with some of their thoughtful and insightful post's over the years that I ended up putting them on my DT list. I have had no trades with them or any other interactions but I still feel as though they are "trustful". I haven't searched through ever single post nor will I, but I do wonder however if they feel they have earned the 2300+ merits that the community has bestowed upon them. I suspect there might be some doubt.

-snipped_
That's not really how it works.

-snipped-
I agree with you, but there's limits.

My point is here are two well respected members telling other people how to think and act..   I am not sure it could be more of an anti-thesis of what bitcoin is all about if it tried. The merit system has to be more than just rewarding the same 1% of people who make quality post's. This is a subjective proposition that has to be intuited at the users discretion. It has to be a way to engage and draw new participation or we will end up in a very small echo chamber. It's to the point that I almost refuse to merit legendary members at all unless it is truly profound or cutting edge. I try and bestow what little merit I gain to newbies trying to gain a foothold so as to entice more participation as a whole or to member who I feel are close to ranking up a level.

I think Globbo's point was to reward and encourage decency and politeness...plain and simple. That seems admirable and a good use case for merits if I have ever heard one.

Just my two sats.

Did you account for air drag, or did you only consider gravitational acceleration?

I took an average pebble out my garden. It weighs 10 grams and has a mean diameter of about 20 mm. If we assume it were perfectly spherical with a drag coefficient of 0.47, travelling through air with standard density of 1.225 kg/m^3, and plug the figures into the formula for terminal velocity we get: sqrt((2*0.01*9.81)/(1.225*(3.14*0.01^2)*0.47)) = 33 m/s or 119 km/h. If we pipe that into E = 1/2*m*v^2 for energy, we get ~5.5 J or ~4 ft-lb.

Or in other words, I need Bitcoin to do something exciting.

A 'pebble' falling from several kilometers (without any acceleration except for gravity) will kill you I think. At least that's what I remember my calculation of over a decade ago.

Did you account for air drag, or did you only consider gravitational acceleration?

At that time it would have lost all of its rotation and probably would be just tumbling with added air drag. A parabolic shoot on the other hand.... But still most probably not deadly... if it was so unfortunate to hit someone in the head/eyes/neck. Which is like an extremely small probability in itself. A hit to the body of person with clothes would probably just bounce (not without some moderate impact pain depending on clothes thickness) and not penetrate.

Sigh..we have to get ya'll some more edjumacation..just saying.

Quote
Out of the more than 500 shots fired from the test platform only 4 falling bullets struck the platform and one fell in the boat near the platform. One of the bullets striking the platform left a 1/16 inch deep mark in the soft pine board. The bullet struck base first.

Quote
Based on the results of these tests it was concluded that the bullet return velocity was about 300 f.p.s. For the 150 gr. bullet this corresponds to an energy of 30 foot pounds. Earlier the Army had determined that, on the average, it required 60 foot pounds of energy to produce a disabling wound. Based on this information, a falling 150 gr. service bullet would not be lethal, although it could produce a serious wound.

+1 WOsMerit

Just be cautious of bias. I do not feel we have seen the last power plays of this year.

Basic strategy has been to view bitcoin as a far-out-of-the-money put on the dollar (as the reserve currency, the one with the most to lose) with no expiry. Whats not to like about that? Very little cost to hold compared to the potential upside.

Bought more at key confidence building points, when it seemed to me that chance of survival, or even success, increased. For example, the non-collapse after the SR takedown and crucially for me, when the US decided to auction seized coins. This is rarely mentioned, but I think those auctions were a huge 'mistake' by TPTB. From their pov, they should have destroyed the coins - instead they literally legitimised BTC.

Sold about 3% in the 5-digits for treats, but not out of scale to general lifestyle.

Played a little with alts, missed ETH though (didn't like the too-slick build-up) now just XMR. Dumped the forks for one-sixth stash boost (thanks Roger). Thought BCH an obvious take-over attempt by the corps and China and would rather have sunk with the ship than be pwned by Jihan, the CCP and fvckin Calvin forcrissakes. Surprised that jbreher bought in, respected the guy.

edit: Hi Toxic2040, and thanks for the charts. I like that you present a range. 3 shades of grey, as it were.
edit: thanks Globb0, you can be a funny guy

+6 WOsMerit's

This is good insight that I agree is rarely mentioned. So much so that I kind of had a whoa moment thinking about it again. I vaguely remember being interested enough in the auction to actually try and figure out what the requirements of bidding would be. I think this was during the time when colored coins was a big(ger) debate and I was just too worried about taint to follow through however.

Your welcome. I am glad you enjoy my feeble ch-art attempts. I too am mostly interested in longer term trends that are shown on the weekly and dailies, but hope that "shorter" time frames can be of use to some.

Again, sometimes it good to step back and look at the whole picture. If you look at the RSI on the monthly, you can see that we are near or at historic lows. Even though the parabolic lines I have illustrated do not show significant upwards curvature until 2nd quarter '19 it does appear we are close to the bottom. The two plot lines near the candles indicate a probability channel of the RSI curve(red) and the average monthly price(orange) of the last cycle. My best guesstimate is that we will fall somewhere between these two lines with more weight towards the red RSI regression. The two winglet's coming off this months candle at a forty-five degree angle indicate what I believe will happen over the next couple of months. Either we have a short steep spike downward and then return to this channel or its the reverse of that, A spike upwards followed by a return towards the median. I wish I had more data but its darn near impossible to say which is more likely at this point.

All I can say is in the long term the market wants to go up but locally there still seems to be shorter's trying to push the price down farther or at least keep it from exploding upwards. #dyor
