601  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: VMC or Bitmine.ch? on: September 19, 2013, 06:54:41 PM
I think both carry some risk.

I don't really believe much in HashFast just because I don't think jamming 250W into a single die is a good way to try to make a miner.

Bitmine/CoinCraft sounds more technically sound to me, and they also do have a (barely) established history of shipping working miners.

I had ordered 2 Avalon modules from bitmine in their batch 2, and I took advantage of their offer to convert my order to a CoinCraft product with a 50% bonus to my existing order value.  This deal worries me a little because it borders on too-good-to-be-true.  It makes me think of BFL's efforts to get ppl to convert to Monarch orders so they can keep the money and take in more without shipping anything yet.  I hope my worry is unfounded.

Edit: Oops, you're talking about FastHash.  I'm thinking of HashFast.  I really haven't studied FastHash's product and can't really comment on it.

Which cgminer version and what settings?

3.4.2.

/home/pi/bin/cgminer/cgminer --avalon-auto --avalon-freq 350-450 --avalon-options 115200:2:10:d:350 --failover-only --api-listen --api-allow W:192.168.23.0/24

...followed by -o/-u/-p for 3 pools.

Maybe it was a pool connection problem?

Seems unlikely.  It would/should have failed over to a backup pool, and restarting cgminer fixed it right away this time (last time I power-cycled the bitburner and that also fixed it right away).  Also my other miners on the same pools were working.

What did the log show for a few pages before that started?

I wasn't watching it.  Is there an easy way to send the output to a logfile?
603  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Work in progess] Burnins Avalon Chip to mining board service on: September 19, 2013, 01:36:57 AM
So I find that maybe once every 12-48 hours cgminer (on Linux on a Pi) stops mining on my bitburner.  The device still shows in the list, but it shows 0 hashes/sec and the output shows a stream of:

Code:
 [2013-09-19 00:55:22] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:23] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:24] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:26] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:27] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:28] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:29] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:30] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:32] BTB2: Idled 1 miners
 [2013-09-19 00:55:33] BTB2: Idled 1 miners

Restarting cgminer makes it work again.

Any ideas on the cause or solution?

(I'm running firmware 1.0.2.)
604  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Poll] Miners, what will you do with all your mined coins? on: September 19, 2013, 01:09:25 AM
I tend to sell some for cash to buy things (and pay my electric costs), and I tend to spend a bunch on new miners when I see what looks like a bargain and gambling with preorders and chip buys and such.

I also buy Casascius coins from time to time and keep them as a way of locking BTC up for savings.

I also bought precious metals a time or two and keep them in a box beside the Casascius box.
605  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [wts] USB BE overclocking parts (16mhz crystal and 1.2k resistor) on: September 17, 2013, 12:30:55 PM
Does more cooling need to be added after this mod?

You enter the shipping queue only once the payment has been cleared.

I hope my coupons come today for orders #435, and #521 so I can get myself into that queue (emailed yesterday).

:hint:

Still waiting.

I got the code today and applied it to a new order.

Now I get to play the waiting game some more.

Cheers.
607  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [wts] USB BE overclocking parts (16mhz crystal and 1.2k resistor) on: September 16, 2013, 10:24:17 PM
So if I remove the factory-installed 12MHz crystal and install your 16MHz crystal, and change the resistor (which resistor?) to bump the voltage I guess, would I expect to see it run at ~444MHz?
608  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: September 16, 2013, 05:58:29 PM
Are you sure you connected the new power supplies correctly?

Pay careful attention to which connectors are for the PCIe power cables, and which is for the EPS 12V.  They should be labeled on the PCB.

609  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official Avalon mining rig clones thread from bitmine.ch (NOW SHIPPING) on: September 15, 2013, 04:43:51 PM
So what are you guys doing with all those PDU, FPGA, WR703N, Cables, Fans and Cases?  If Avalon sells gen2 upgrade hashing modules could just populate with those.

I'm sure there's a market for spare parts for existing owners.  I still need a spare FPGA control board and PDU myself.
610  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [PSA] Don't buy BFL preorder transfers on: September 15, 2013, 03:43:35 PM
That's why you don't release the escrow until you have the goods in-hand.

Otherwise what's the point of escrow?

wait and us have a big surprise

I had hoped that at the end of my several-month wait I might get a 4-module surprise in my units.

Nope, they only shipped the regular 3 modules.  No surprise.
613  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: September 14, 2013, 11:12:19 PM
Well, I *can* make more firmware, but I will be making it blind, and since the new usb library needs udev, I will have modified the avalon build to include udev in it. I have no idea if that even works just like that or needs some other modifications to work. So while I can build the firmware, I can't test if it works, and likely, given the change to the underlying OS, it will brick the avalon. If someone is capable of unbricking their avalon and is willing to try it, I'll post said firmware (the former requirement is more important than the latter desire).

However... there is nothing particularly new in the latest cgminer for Avalon except for the inclusion of a new libusb built statically into the binary which may make it less likely to have USB failures, but since the last firmware I posted was so solid, I don't see the need for upgrading.

It's just a WR703N with a few mods.  I'll try and get one of mine modded to send him if he'll take it.  I'll need a shipping address if someone wants to PM me one.

I most definitely appreciate his contributions.  I received some more avalons yesterday that came with 0723.  After I put 0821 on them they're all mining substantially faster.

I really hope to see a firmware some day that can clock each 10-chip board individually.  I don't know what it would take to accomplish that...I guess reprogramming the FPGA controller.

For now I plan to play games swapping modules around to try and make some strong machines (clocked higher) and some weaker ones.
Thanks for the offer Bogart, but I'm not expecting to pull any more rabbits out of my hat for Avalon hardware. I still wouldn't mind a fixed device (broke the damn thing trying to hold down reset button) so I can at least keep the avalon firmware in line with latest cgminer.

I have one that I've bridged R113 on now to make it accept power from the USB A port.  I tested it in my B1 and it seems to mine fine, powered by the downstream hub.

It's still different from the factory Avalon WR703N in that it doesn't have the wifi pigtail attached (no problem if you use ethernet).  I hope you use ethernet.  I can still attach a pigtail if needed.

It also has 32MB of RAM instead of 64MB the Avalon ones have.  So far as I can tell it works fine with 32MB.

If you want to PM me a shipping address I'll send it over.
614  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: September 14, 2013, 07:49:59 PM
anyone tried relocating the PDU to accomodate longer PSUs?

Some PSUs are OK. I got a couple OCZ 1250w PSUs for my B3 units. Fits fine in the case without moving anything, overclocks like a champ.

Isn't the PDU in a different place on B3 units?  Or am I misremembering...

The Corsair HX1050 (and same-sized HX850 that I used with 3 modules) barely fit in my B1.  I have to unscrew the PDU board, and reinstall it after the PSU is in place.  The specs on newegg say they are 7.09" long.

I'm selling some Black Arrow Lancelots:

https://www.bitmit.net/en/item/59351-blackarrow-lancelot-fpga-miner-300-prospero-asic-trade-in

</shameless_plug>

(Black Arrow, the trade-in program is open to anyone with a Black Arrow Lancelot, and is not restricted to just original purchasers, yes?)

This trade in program is for customers who believed in us from the beginnings and tho whom we've made the promise. Only the original purchasers will be able to trade in.

Doh.  De-listed.

As an original purchaser, I may use the trade-in program, but to use all my Lancelots I'd have to buy a lot more Prosperos than suits my budget.

It would be a nice benefit to original purchasers in my position to allow us to sell the Lancelots to other parties for trade-in use.  I guess that's a larger benefit than you wish to extend.

OK then, fair enough.
616  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Work in progess] Burnins Avalon Chip to mining board service on: September 14, 2013, 06:52:45 PM
I have 50 chips going from Zefir to Burnin yet, but only have orders for 2 XX boards, leaving 10 extra chips.  I guess I mathed wrong.

I'm not sure what I'll do about that.
617  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: September 14, 2013, 06:47:11 PM
I've asked sensei/mittenmining to go ahead and ship me my 8 K16s in their current state (minus any he needs to continue debugging).  I expect I'll be receiving them next week sometime.

I'll look at them myself, and can also set one or two up for remote access via SSH to a connected Pi or something if that can help.

having some strange problems with my batch 1 4 modules.

...

it keeps restarting and not hashing for more than 3-4 times over the past few hours.!

What power supply?  To run 4 modules you should replace the stock PSU for sure.

My Batch 1 is humming along fine now with 4 modules at 348MHz (--avalon-auto) with 1d16h uptime.  I installed a Corsair HX1050.
