thanks for all the advice...its a cost game at the end of day and with vega56 being 295 will prob end up buying them.

IMHO, better to invest in the 5600/5700XT because better resale value, BIOS mod gives good results, good power/hash ratio

While cost game is important factor, stable rig without any babysitting, lights out operation and can be placed in remote DC/warehouse etc. the 5x00 is worth it.

BBT's latest video on 5600XT seems to deliver best performance - check it out

Best Bang for the Buck Mining GPU for Ethereum 5600XT 6GB DDR6
Posted on 1st Sept 2020

LOL 6gb? people just got disqualified with their 4gb cards and then they just moved to the second base-6gb? plus add the upcoming more powerful/efficient upcoming gpus, these cards will be kicked out of the game very soon.

"bang for the buck" because the next bang, they'll get banged out of ETH mining and probably other coins too...the saying "you get what you pay for" applies to this one.
902  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Who is going to buy the RTX 3090 ? on: September 07, 2020, 02:33:23 AM
Nvidia not so strong as it once was.
most of the algo advantages are now slowly being FPGA'd
ill be replacing my whole farm for sure this series tho, over 100x 1080tis. i skipped 20 series, werent worth it
likely ill replace with all 3070, but maybe 3080, need to get one to see about the X mem first
the 3070 dosent have that X mem, COULD make a difference, we will see

if ETH hits 800$CDN in next 2 weeks tho, then ill sell some and use profits to buy 3090s maybe :p
just not sure yet , that card is so big dik haha, some of my rigs will need new PSUs and maybe even boards to handle it :/

IF we saw a "pill" for this series, that would make the difference, but with how it was received last time, fat chance of that happening Sad

nvidia started with competitive price (unlike in the past) and they increased power consumption of their cards.

increasing power consumption to increases performance is a "cop-out" for performance-efficiency ratio.... if amd is doing 100 fps at 280w and nvidia is doing 120 fps at 320w LOL

maybe they knew amd has something nice coming out.

amd radeon vii is 100mhs at ethash, big navi should do 150mhs

if this is true big navi having ~50mhs more hash than 3090 is a no brainer for mining, even if some can argue that that is just for ethash, the HBM new gen might pull off a winner here.

Quite profitable mining ETH, after 5 days of mining with ~7,3 Gh/s got a block of 8,56 ETH  Cool

ETH is paying you for the coming gpu upgrades.

It seems that certain Defi tokens were scams and seems the fees are starting to get back to normal. Right now fees are around 100 Gwei or so while during the peak they were at 500 Gwei or so. Some of those food tokens like Hotdog or Sausage basically went to -100%.

Given the price crash our profitability is less than half of a few days ago. We will see what happens. Seems this sell off was at the same time as the stock market selling off. So it could be nothing more than a dip and continue. However if it was the top then most likely we won't get back to $500 ETH until election results.
defi tokens were a scam from the very beginning, this is a normal bubble. I have no idea how they were accepted for Binance

someone knows someone who knows someone in binance hehe

defi means DEFInitely gonna lose your money
905  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 2Gb,4Gb DAG fix, need atleast 1 GPU large enough to generate DAG. on: September 05, 2020, 09:54:40 AM
ETH DAG was moved from HDD to VRAMs

v4.0:

- no DAG files anymore.
- removed "-dir" option.
- Bug fixes.

you all might wanna try old claymore ETH miner below version 4.0

take a look...might work or might not.

Interesting, that Dag creation for 4gb cards gives a pain, well if it is working it will gives a constant relief to us and to all rx 570 4gb user, by the way since this is an old version of claymore, do you think that the old amd driver will work for it? How about blockchain driver?

i don't know...only experimentation will solve this question.

looked at the readme.txt

Quote
This miner is free-to-use, however, current developer fee is 2.5%, every hour the miner mines for 90 seconds for developer.
If you don't agree with the dev fee - don't use this miner.

This version is for recent AMD videocards only: 7xxx, 2xx, 3xx and 4xx, 2GB or more.

There are builds for Windows x64 and for Linux x64 (tested on Ubuntu 12.04). No 32-bit support. No NVidia support.

LOL at 2.5 dev fee,

file name is "Claymore's ZCash AMD GPU Miner v3.1 Beta - Catalyst 15.12.zip" ...that's the driver most of the time it works with later driver versions up before "crimson drivers"

rx 570 is just a refresh of rx 470, so it might work.

907  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Solar mining vs diesel generator mining ? Any experience? on: September 05, 2020, 02:00:51 AM
Mining is fun, it's a fun hobby and it can be profitable for many who already have the GPUs and cheap electricity. But in your case - researching coins and buying/holding is the way to go.

Also look for alternative ways to earn coins/tokens.

There is nothing fun about mining, is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing and in the end you never get the amount of money you put in and if you do get the same amount you put in then you are lucky. However mining is not bad if you live in a winter state, always cold, mining can cover some of the cost with heating but that is the only exception. There are various videos of people that had serious complications because of the heating mining have done to them. The change in the temperature is dramatic, a mining place in a tropical country can reach 50 to 60 Celsius easily even with many exhaust fans and staying on a temperature like that for few hours can cause unreversible damage to people, especially in the brain.

hot springs and saunas are known to have health benefits....use your mining room wisely you might also get the benefit of heat hehe  Cheesy
908  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New NVIDIA Geforce RTX 30 series GPUs on: September 05, 2020, 01:48:16 AM
other games, if you google can consume 7-9gb vram, that's 2017-2019. upcoming new games can easily double that, so 16gb is the sweet spot for gpu graphics.

I have a feeling that is exactly what nvidia is trying to do. I mean most people dont plan to upgrade from their gtx 1080ti because it has 11gb and if they have a 1440 or a 4k monitor, can still even play many games at 4k with that amount of gddr, 10GB for a 3080 this time and age is low, I say that 16gb is minimum for a card like that, even if it was a 12gb would be doable. It's funny, the 3090 24gb x 10gb 3080, nvidia really want people to buy the 3090. Nvidia simply killed the 3080 even before launching it, dead on arrival.

3080 maybe good for mining if gddr6x proves it can hash a significant amount better than gddr6, gddr5x, and gddr5. we'll see..

besides there are gamers that can still push up to $ 700  for GPU budget but not for a $ 1500 one. If results shows it is better than 3070 where an extra $100 can justify the upgrade.

then the 3070ti with 16gb of gddr6 will be an upgrade because it can play games that requires more than 10gb so 3070 users will upgrade to 3070ti and 3080 users with 10gb will upgrade to 3080ti with 16gb.

I think 8nm of 3000 series cards will be a long life span generation before the next big breakthrough will come. where nvidia decides to pull off this "8-10gb to be upgraded to 16gb" double sell technique LOL.

anyway if you bought 3080 10gb ($700) and upgrade to 3080ti 16gb ($800) that's, $1500 all in all purchase..just like 3090 price.....me? fuck that shit spare me the trouble I'm getting the 3090 24gb for my main PC hehe

some will say why not wait for the 3080ti then? well..mining profit of 50% ROI (modest estimate) will make your $1500 purchase equal to a $750 card LOL.

The 3070ti will have to be a hell of a card, i mean, the 3070 is a disappointment and maybe that is what nvidia intended to do, 3070 raw performance is way behind the 3080, so much so that I think the 3070 is somehow a 3060 super because of the 256bit memory hehe, nvidia launched an early 3060 super hehe and that is the 3070 ehhe, the 3070ti might be the real 3070, looking back 2016, there was a gtx 1070 256 bit and the 1080 256 bit too, 1070 was clearly the only gpu to have, nvidia killed the 1080 on arrival, now they've chosen to kill the 3070 on arrival too hehe, if wasn't for the 320 bit memory and amazing raw performance of the 3080, that would be dead of arrival too, can still use it for a year or 2, depending the games you play and the monitor you have, I myself have a 4k monitor and I just can't go back to 1440p anymore.

Nvidia chose the 8nm because they went previously 12nm, so 16nm, 12nm, 8nm and likely 4nm next and also chose samsung because of favours between friends hehe, tsmc is more inclined to amd.

There is no point waiting for the 3080ti and if it comes will be next year march~august, around that and that is too far away, amd can have a 5nm ampere killer by then. AMD is not like before, we still have to see this bignavi but amd changed, they are different, they could this time still lag behind nvidia but they are getting closer to nvidia on every release. The 5700 was amazing, I did not think they could compete equally with 12nm 2070 on price performance and they did. So i'm not counting AMD out at this time.

just like in the past nvidia is competing with itself, a sign that amd might be again under nvidia.

I agree with not counting out AMD, the fury with HBM vrams did really well, the radeon vii did very well too (100mh ETH hash) (BTW cores are the bottleneck LOL)...if big navi uses HBM (new generation) tech it really can compete but if they use gddr6..well nvidia wins again.

amd in "gpu arena" did a thread ripper fuck up style with early HBM adaptions...we will see if they can pull a ryzen 9 39xx thing with big navi GPUs..(watching HBM tech closely)

Those benchs looks very close to what I predicted, 3090 around 20% faster than 3080, and 3080 50% faster than 3070.

I predicted that x2 hashrate of 100mhs as a possibility, people are so 2017 with 50mhs per card LOL. also I predicted up to 150mhs as unlikely but not impossible, driver optimizations and mining software tweaks might squeeze more hashes.

you all remember when DAG was inside the hard drive at the early days of ETH mining?, it was moved inside VRAM for faster hashes.

so, if a miner dev develops a miner to put DAG inside RAM, NVME/SSD, might still push these 4gb cards if the hashes per watt are still in "profitable" area. same thing with ASICS.
Wow this was before I started in 2016, what was the speedup of going from not in VRAM -> VRAM?

If that's the case, the next logical place to store it would be in the system RAM, upgrading that is super easy and it would be the next fastest access place..

This could be a big big deal..

DAG creation is significantly increased.

a lot of tweaks and optimizations already happened, so it will not be a simple comparison between on system ram or ssd vs vram, besides 280x (the ones i used) can't do ETH anymore so comparing will be a bit vague.

even upgrading from a core2duo s775 processor to a s775 core2quad processor has improved my ETH hash back then lol, anyway miner devs are the one who can answer this inquiry.

BTW here an old post in claymore thread, it is a bit optimistic regarding going back to HDD/SSD for DAG.

v4.0:

- no DAG files anymore.
- removed "-dir" option.
- Bug fixes.

Great job!
Although speed is slightly lower with 4.0 than 3.3

Speed is the same, but today is new epoch #47, probably you remember speed for epoch #46.

This now means that the algorithm does not require additional files, which opens the way Asic .

No asics, I just decided to solve issues with DAG files completely, I planned to do it later but after Wolf0's phrase "goddamned DAGs" I understood that I must do it right now Smiley Now I generate DAGs directly on GPUs so no DAG files are used at all.

And no slowdowns on restart?

If you have HDD, not SSD, you will see that v4.0 starts much faster. If you have slow CPU you will see the same.
911  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New NVIDIA Geforce RTX 30 series GPUs on: September 04, 2020, 06:59:07 AM

i didn't specifically say far cry about the vram size issue, far cry is about 1080p vs 1440p and 4k gaming

the textures (other game settings that eats vram besides resolution) in resident evil 2 is a good example LOL

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1141516-wtf-my-2080-ti-doesn%E2%80%99t-have-enough-vram-for-resident-evil-2-%3F/

other games, if you google can consume 7-9gb vram, that's 2017-2019. upcoming new games can easily double that, so 16gb is the sweet spot for gpu graphics.

the 3080ti or 3080 super (16gb or 20gb) is supposed to be the best bang for the buck but nvidia must be saving that "ace card" for amd release, if amd manages to pull off a 3080 killer.
912  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Miners Earn $500,000 in Just One Hour on: September 04, 2020, 06:19:04 AM
Look at the world economy before going all in on miners. I prefer to have my cash ready for property pickups. I already did my crypto shopping when ETH went sub $100 and less than 0.017 vs BTC.

I doubt this bubble will sustain for a decent amount of time.

You have done it right, eth would no way sustain that crash below $100 for long, that was the right time to buy, hell even $150 was a good price at that moment. Bubble here is only on defi, eth and btc is no way in a bubble, is far from a bubble yet. ETH 2.0 is coming and that is huge, for now price seems to be indicating it will crash but I do not go along with it, any crash on eth or btc now is simply the people that want the quick money, whales know the big bull run is coming and they are slowly preparing for it. I would at this moment position myself to what is coming in few weeks.

besides how will nvidia and amd sell their cards if gpu mining is dead already?  Grin hehe

My sources in Shenzen shared with me that come November, we may see a sharp drop in hash due to 4GB cards going offline. This should give us enough time to get ready...
Yes, this is why I jumped in whole hog on new cards, ETH doubling was just gravy. I expect to see a 25-50% hashrate drop.

I am thinking this could last until early january.

just remember that the bitmain eth miner can be upgraded to more ram and mine .

the miner was not very efficient so if they used all the same parts but more ram 🐑 it would not be as good as amd 5700.

i would think they could make one with more ram and more efficient. I would look out for this to occur.

May take until January and wont be done unless mining ⛏ keeps doing well.

This fear of mine has prevented me from really pushing on buying cards.

you all remember when DAG was inside the hard drive at the early days of ETH mining?, it was moved inside VRAM for faster hashes.

so, if a miner dev develops a miner to put DAG inside RAM, NVME/SSD, might still push these 4gb cards if the hashes per watt are still in "profitable" area. same thing with ASICS.

the gpu mining edge is the tech- the VRAM, I hope gddr6x can bring a huge generational leap vs gddr6, gddr5x and gddr5.
915  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New NVIDIA Geforce RTX 30 series GPUs on: September 04, 2020, 05:10:04 AM
Yeah it's always annoying, although you pay the price for that VRAM. But 10GB should be enough to play in 4K with all details, having a bit extra would be nice (12GB or 16GB), but I don't really see the point of 24GB, for gaming at least.

The 3090 is targeted at AI ie, deep learning..., if for gaming 24gb makes no sense, not bad to have but no point in having for games that amount right now, 16gb should be the normal for 2020, 2016 was 8gb, only 16gb makes sense for a flagship like rtx 3080 in this time and age. It seems micron is having a hard time to produce enough gddrx6 for it, they dont want to sacrifice the ones on 3090 and want the 3080 to take the hit, I guess the 3090 has a higher margin of profit, so the good gddrx6 memory modules will all go to 3090 and the leftover to 3080. I guess nvidia will launch a 3080 super later on with 16gb once things get to hard mass production at micron factories.

monitor size, screen resolution  plus other graphics quality config on PC games tends to eat a lot of vram, my 1080ti 11gb ram gets filled when i max out game settings with my 24 inch 1900x1200 resolution..having ~34 inches monitor will need that 16gb at least, 3080 "10gb" is a teaser, gamers will hate that later on.

1080p gaming is dead, when i played new dawn of far cry, in the hazy/hallucinogen part of the game, the difference with 1080p vs 1440p and 4k with enemy visibility is huge.

10gb of vram for mining, i think it will be fine for quite a long time unless there is some mining software tweak of new algorithms and/or existing algorithms that will hash a lot more when more vram (greater than 10gb) is utilized.

besides, check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGzsYCRMVu4 doom eternal 4k gaming, the fps dips as low as 110fps. for gamers that uses and want a 144 hz and above monitor and fps that does not dip below 144fps (hz and fps in sync), 3090 is the answer.
916  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: New NVIDIA Geforce RTX 30 series GPUs on: September 04, 2020, 04:55:13 AM

Thanks to all you guys who "forced" me to get my GPUs dusted and earning again.

1ghs = 100$ worth of ETH per day!

even Nicechash cant keep up... at 1ghs = 88$ per day.

anyone knows about the new RTX-3070/3080, its suppose to be the incoming King of GPUs

1.3ghs is good, especially with high efficiency gear.  It will be paid off quite soon i think.

I have about 2.5 ghs... so much that i've popped the main breaker   Shocked Shocked

this will be a natural occurrence, maxing out their electrical lines hehe.

people who are going to venture to bigger farms might get burned when trend reverses. so move fast...really fast  Grin

here is a brain storm.

BITCOIN

(not asic miner here so if i miss something feel free to correct)

2017 antminer s9      13.5 TH @ 1300 watts
2020 antminer s19    95    TH @ 3200 watts

that 2.5x power, so if we assume 2.5 x 13.5 TH is 33.75 TH

33.75 TH  versus  95 TH both at 3200watts .... that's an x3

ETHEREUM

2017 1080ti ~50mh

2020 1080ti, 5700/xt, 2080ti, 2080......40-60mhs

I think mhs is getting more valuable, gpu miners are dreaming of a x2 like 100mhs, x3 (~150mhs) is still unlikely but not impossible.

games BTW showed up to 80% increase in 2080ti vs 3080 (drivers and mining software are not optimized yet)...optimistic to a x2 mining mhs.

ETH is more pump-able compared to bitcoin, $400 to x3 is 1200$ besides inside ETH there are pumps too within it's tokens hehe.

Yeah i think I purchased enough cards for now.

sideline watchers are about to join the GPU mining bandwagon when rig porn with 3080 and 3090 cards with talks of massive profits hit this forum (NOT A FINANCIAL ADVICE THOUGH LOL  Grin )

P.S. watch out for GPU buying itch/frenzy/fiasco...coming very soon hehe

Might want to save your money for September 17th when the 3080 releases. $700 10 GB GDDR6X and 2x faster than the 2080.  The 3070 is faster than 2080ti but uses 8 GB GDDR6 and comes out in October and its $499

Radeon 5000 series currently have a large lead on NVidia 2000 series when it comes to ETH mining effeciency/profitability.  Assuming you will be able to get a hold of 6 3080's in the next 3 weeks at $700 each, they would have to do close to 100Mhz on ETH to be equivalent to the 5700XT's.  I seriously doubt they will even approach that number.

Now granted, i totally get that Nvidia GPUs are better at mining other algos, but let's be honest... right now, all the money is in ETH mining. Maybe that ends next week (i sure hope not) but you can only go with what you have.  Plus, losing 3 weeks of mining at these rates would be insanely crazy, especially since I already have it 90% bought.

Personally, I am much more eager to see what the Radeon Big Navi cards are going to be capable of. That's why I will likely be holding off on building my next rig until after they are released.

I'm thinking about the vrams....is 24gb a good investment vs 10gb? ...will there be a new coin or miner tweaks that will benefit 24gb, that is the question hehe

at least my main PC will be 3090, maxed out games gobbles up 11gb vram of 1080ti, 10gb vram sucks specially now that these new tech are "true 4k gaming", 3080 is a teaser, will disappoint a lot of gamers...why? o why? 10gb hu hu hu..

3070 is out of the question for me gddr6 vs gddr6x, 6x is the obvious winner. BTW info out there says 3070 is better than 2080ti  Grin

as history suggests bull market always breaks the previous highs, that above $1000 ETH...what will be the new high? 3k? 5k? or 10k? ..buy cards or save coins or both? hmmm.

these 100mhs or above hashrates will eat a huge chunk off ETH asic/fpga profits.

BTW if big navi dissapoints, you lost another month of profitable mining...that's the gamble LOL
